What can one say about Beijing? It is the cultural and political capital of a country that boasts a population of 1.3 Billion and is the world’s largest communist state. It is also the capital of the bicycle which although being surpassed now by automotive transport is still a major part of Beijing life. The centre of the city to the outsider would seem to be the vast area at the geographical centre that encompasses the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. The National People’s Museum of China and the Great People’s Hall of China can be found here. But the beating heart of Beijing is found in what is left of the old traditional hutong that are tucked away in amongst the new high-rise buildings and skyscrapers that dominate the city’s skyline. Well I haven't blogged in a while and alot has happen since I left Moscow. We left at 8.30 in the evening well over a week ago and I now find myself sitting with a coke in Beijing in China, the world's largest communist state. The train from Moscow to Ulaanbator took 6 nights and was in part fantastic and in others excrutiatingly painful. We crossed the urals to stunning views of high topped mountains, with snaking rivers crawling in between, followed by the siberian plateau of flat sprawling fields bisected by gushing rivers full to the brims and dotted with small wooden farms. They were built in the 1930s at Stalin's command and were finished a few weeks late (much to the worry of the engineers who expected execution). But frescos cover the walls and they are several art deco stations. Sadly after getting off at Annino on the ring road for my hotel I had an unfortunate incident which ended in me diving out of the door to avoid the driver who was wiedling a pistol (a Stechkin APS unless I am much mistaken) and asking for money. Still I stayed in the hotel ... read more

Well, I am finally at the hotel in Berlin, although we got into Berlin Hauptbanhof about 4 and half hours late. Apparantly a tree fell on the line. Bloody inconsiderate tree. The journey here wasn' too bad but I found I slept better when the train was moving which last night wasn't a lot. Still glad to be here. Although only for one night which is a shame. I haven't managed to get out and see anything unfortunately. Just chilling at the hotel. Leaving early tomorrow morning for Moscow. So going out to get supplies, supermarket around the corner. Met some interesting people on the trip so far. The french medieval muscians I shared my compartment with on the train, the two americans students I am sitting with talking about Berlin. The english guy on his ... read more
