CharlieandRich - Charlie & Rich

Charlie & Rich Hello and welcome to our travel blog! Rich and I are off on our honeymoon travelling Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Thailand. We hope you will enjoy seeing what we get up to :) Check back when you can to see how far we have got...

Thanks sooo much to everyone who came and made our wedding such an amazing and very special day for us! We had the time of our lives :)Thanks also for all our presents - for those we haven't had a chance to write to yet, we promise to do so as soon as we get home - the last couple of days have been very hectic! If you happen to know who left any of the following behind, let us know and we will get them sent out to you - a camera in a black and red bag (think a hen?), a black sunglasses case, a straw hat with a 'V' on the front or a pair of silver cuff links (think an usher?)...

Off to pack our backpacks now!!!!

Love Mr and Mrs Fryer (still a bit tired and croaky but still beaming from ear to ear!) xxx

The boat to Phi Phi was absolutely heaving - in fact it turned out there were about 10 large boats going to Phi Phi at 8 am that morning. The way to board a boat in Thailand is firstly to clamber across however many other boats are moored up in front of it - it usually involves literally jumping half a meter or so from one boat to the next - the first time we did this it was quite strange but now we are getting used to it! We were unsure about handing over all our luggage but cheered up [View Full Entry]

Phuket

 Asia » Thailand » South » Phuket
There's not a lot to say about Phuket. The flight was good, taking only an hour or so from Bangkok. On arrival at Phuket we were hassled so severely by taxi drivers that I nearly knocked one out (still not feeling that hot = no sense of humour!). It took about 45 minutes to get from the airport to Phuket Town and we checked into our hotel (The Crystal Inn) which was cheap as chips and pretty good. We were rather disappointed to find that Phuket smells a lot like Bangkok and after a short walk about and a pizza dinner [View Full Entry]

The next day we approached Bangkok from a different angle. Having decided that what we did like about Bangkok was the funky Koh San Road and the cheap clothes, cheap food, cheap beer etc, we thought we would focus on that and forget about roaming the streets more generally. We headed down at lunchtime to have a couple of beers and scoffed down some more fabulous pad thai on the hoof. We wound up at one of the big bars sitting right on the Koh San Road and watched the hawkers selling crazy wooden frogs that sounded like cane toads (highly [View Full Entry]

Bonkers Bangkok

 Asia » Thailand » Central » Bangkok
It was a long journey from Fiji to Bangkok. About 5 hours to Sydney and then 5 hours waiting in Sydney and unable to leave the airport (they are doing up their internal transfer area and there wasn't much there!), then a 10 hour flight to Bangkok. We drank our way through the first part of the journey and slept our way through the second part, and by the time we touched down in Bangkok, apart from me having Bangkok belly already, we weren't feeling as bad as we thought we might. Our 'boutique hotel' turned out to be an absolute [View Full Entry]

Bula Fiji!

Oceania » Fiji » Mamanuca Islands
I have to be honest. We spoiled ourselves in Fiji. After all our good intentions of staying at the backpackers didn't pay off, and we were desperate for something to book quickly, we chose Treasure Island and stuck it on the credit card. Ok it was a bit naughty of us, but after reading some reviews of some of the backpacker islands we thought we probably made the right decision - it would be awful to go to Fiji and find that it was grubby, noisy, glass on the beaches hell... So Treasure Island it was! We flew into Nadi at [View Full Entry]

The Short Walk to the Beach!

We weren't in Rotorua for very long, especially as we weren't keen on the smell! More sulphur pools everywhere and the whole town stinks of rotten eggs! (Although now we are writing from Bangkok with MUCH worse smells!). We did have enough time to throw ourselves down the luge several times - wahoo! It's much longer than the Queenstown one, but perhaps not quite as many twists and turns and crikey-I-just-left-my-seat moments. We spent a happy couple of hours up there though. Unfortunately the zorbing was closed due to the wind (the wind stops a lot of activities in NZ we [View Full Entry]

On our Way Down

We stayed at Hahei the first night and got there just in the nick of time to visit Hot Water Beach. Two hours either side of low tide you can dig a hole in the sand down by the sea edge and due to the fact that the sand there is on top of more 'thermal activity' (parts of the beach are above areas where the sea water collects in underground reseviors, this water is then superheated by the earth and the water comes back to the surface. The water cools off just enough at the surface that you can sit [View Full Entry]

After Queenstown we headed off to Milford Sound via Te Anau which is where most people travel to Milford S from. You could do a day trip from Queenstown but it would be a helluva drive as it's 2-3 hours from Te Anau. And it's probably the most dangerous drive we have done yet - absolutely incredible views as the road winds its way up into the mountains, right up into the snow and past various avalanche spots - there are places on the road where you are not allowed to stop as it is too dangerous there. Anyway - back [View Full Entry]

It was a very cold and early start but when the bus picked us up we seemed to have a good group, there were six of us divers and two instructors. The journey as I mentioned was amazing, although we did sleep the first bit, it was so warm and snuggly in the van... woke up feeling very sick as we twisted and turned our way at high speed (these guys drive it every day!) up through the mountains. But anyway, we were soon down the other side and off to Milford Sound. The Sound was so calm and so beautiful [View Full Entry]

The drive from Te Anau took about 4-5 hours and then we rushed over to the peninsula to look for penguins, but got there a bit too late really - there was a tour going to look at yellow eyed penguins which took an hour and a half and seemed a bit excessive, we only really wanted to clap eyes on them. Especially as we had seen them in the water now several times, lucky me. Anyway we headed back into Dunedin and found a campsite where there were some good local walks, one of which we did in the morning [View Full Entry]
