Dan's movie trailer he made... worth a few yucks Igor It was here, finally. A journey over a year in the making. An idea born out of a flippant comment and in less than 12 hours, it would be done and dusted. We hoped it would be worth it. Breakfast was an early affair and we then regrouped in the hotel lobby. We were being picked up at 08:10 by our tour guide. We found him outside sat in a very clean looking mini-van... almost too clean for Kyiv, where everything was a lada or worse. The driver jumped out and introduced himself. Igor. One of the few people we'd met in Ukraine who's English was not limited to 3 words and a grunt. He opened the van up and warned us not to sit on ... read more

My knowledge of Kyiv Before going to Kyiv and even Ukraine I had little knowledge of the area, similarly to Copenhagen which turned out to be quite the adventure. what limited insight I possessed could not have prepared me for the short stay we had in store. So you can imagine my lack of knowledge I shall list what I thought I knew. Ukraine was part of the USSR There was a horrendous famine in the early part of the 20th century Independence was gained following the dissolution of the Soviet Union Ukraine has historically been crapped on by the German's and the Russians Kyiv was sacked by the Mongol's in 1240 resulting in a Mongol victory The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station Lenin Reactor #4 exploded during tests on April 26th 1986 releasing 400 ... read more

Off Again Since returning from my road trip to France both Gemma and I had itchy feet and wanted to get away again, even if only for a few days. 2 days after getting back from France we had found a really good deal on flights and hotel in central Copenhagen. At £130 each we booked without further deliberation. We wanted somewhere where for a weekend we could just relax, away from our home and jobs. Instead of immersing ourselves in a historical and educational experience we wanted to lose ourselves in the sights, sounds and smells of somewhere new. Copenhagen has all of these in great abundance! Stansted We both finished work had a quick bite to eat and set out on the two hour journey to Stansted from Leicester (it's funny that the drive ... read more

Far from Home with the Screaming Eagles Come the morning we set out for another traditional breakfast of a Baguette each, 2 Croissants each and a Pan au Chocolat. Suitably stuffed on Butter, Pastry, Bread and Chocolate we set out for St. Mere Eglise. This small town on the route up to Cherbourg was the Western flank of the invasion effort. Paratroopers of the US 101st airborne division, The Screaming Eagles, were dropped in and the town has become famed for the Paratrooper who's parachute became tangled around the church spire in the main square. These days there is an effigy of a paratrooper hung by his parachute from the spire and the Church commissioned a stained glass window to be designed to forever commemorate the efforts of the Airborne troopers who liberated the town. We ... read more

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you." - General Eisenhower Some Background Operation Overlord (the codename given to D-Day) was the largest Air and Naval Operation in the history of Warfare. It was the culmination of years of planning, subversion, stock-piling of resources and training of men. The Operation was broken down into many minor Operations that all contributed to the overall success of Overlord. Should Overlord have failed there is a very real chance that Britain would have been invaded and I may not be here typing this blog today. The courage and strength of each individual ... read more

Berlin is my first 'solo' jaunt out of the UK, my girlfriend (Gemma) and I decided that we needed to get out and see the world. Gemma has been to Berlin back in 2005 when she was at school. Nevertheless we set out to Luton on the 4th June. Boarding At 2.30 am in Luton Travelodge just off J11 of the M1 my alarm awoke me, precisely 2 and a half hours after i'd initially tried to go to sleep. But i was too excited to feel the effects of sleep deprivation. Both of us got ready and set out for Central Car Storage. They run a shuttle bus to and from the terminal and we got to the airport for 3.45 am. Once there we played the waiting game, departures really is like Purgatory. So ... read more
