Michelin Star Count: Today 1; Trip 12! So first thing this morning we hopped on the tube and popped on over to Westminster Abbey, a centuries old Abbey in the heart of London, directly across from parliament. Passed by Big Ben on the way but he must be terribly under the weather! Covered pretty much everywhere but the clock face for restoration. A quick breakfast in the cafe at the abbey (nothing to write home about but on the property) and then around to get in line to get into the Abbey (NB. Buy tickets in advance from the Abbey website, will save you an hour easily). As soon as I walked through the door, headed to counter number 2 in order to sign up for a tour from a Verger. Well worth the 5 pounds ... read more

Michelin Star Count: Today 0; Trip 11 So this morning we headed out to Lantana Cafe Fitzrovit, a little cafe a few minutes walk from the British Museum in London. Came highly recommended and it didn’t disappoint. Banana bread french toast, eggs and avocado and of course, the Bert- egg, bacon, rocket, cheese between two slices of sourdough. Definitely worth the stop. Right around the corner is a Fabrique, which we have not seen since Stockholm a few years back. Go to Lantana, have breakfast, hit Fabrique for a cardamom bun. Don’t ask, just do it. After breakfast we had a guided tour of the British museum in London. First off...what a HUGE building. This is an enormous museum. A fantastic collection of artefacts from British colonial history including a room full of stone wall carvings ... read more

MIchelin Star Count: Today 0; Trip 11 So this morning we got up and headed down the tube to the Coppa Club, a resto near the water and across from the Tower of London. Pretty straightforward menu - eggs bene, avocado toast, English breakfast. A good meal, one that redeemed the English breakfast for me. Tried the blood pudding. So...it wasn’t the worst thing I have ever had (that honour goes to Kalles - if in Sweden, you must try it just to say you have but be warned) but I just don’t see the attraction to dried, fried blood. If yo are heading to the Tower, a great location for a pretty good breakfast to get you in the right neighbourhood for your tour. After breakfast we popped across to the subway to meet our ... read more

Michelin star count: Today 3; trip 11 So we started our day off with a leisurely walk across the Blackfriar’s bridge to have breakfast at the Swan, a restaurant attached to the Globe theatre here in London. Well, it was a disappointment! A British breakfast it was supposed to be. A British breakfast it was. But not a good one. I certainly wouldn’t recommend the Swan. After breakfast we wandered next door to the Globe theatre (well, the third incarnation of it) for a tour and talk about every high school students favourite Bill! Interesting factoid, the globe was never in Stratford on Avon! Those same high school students would be much more enlightened as they drove down the 401 in that yellow school bus to see R&J in our very own Stratford! Turns out the ... read more

Michelin Star Count: Today 0; Trip 8 So after last nights post I headed back up to the room and could feel a headache coming on so I popped a couple Tylenol with he hopes of heading it off. Unfortunately this was not your everyday headache so around 4:00 I would up with a battle going on about where the boundaries of my skull was to be and the insides were not giving up. Now I get about 2 migraines a year. Usually one I can clearly chalk up to being horribly dehydrated. The other, no clue. This was one of those. Couple more Tylenol and try to get some sleep. That worked for an hour. Double dip for an Advil. By 7 the war had climaxed but there were still some fires to put out. ... read more

Michelin Star Count: Today 0; Trip 8 So today we left our humble abode in Bray and travelled to the Cotswolds for a quiet day of walking around. The Cotswolds are a bunch of little country towns with some of the coolest names. Stow on the Wold, Upper Slaughter, Bourton on the Water are the three we spent some time in today. Sweet little villages, leaning a bit to the touristy side but still worth the drive. Wonderful sites on the way. We had a reservation at a pub just outside of Stow that was supposed to do the best Sunday roast in the area. Sunday roast is a big thing here. Beef. Potatoes. Yorkshires. The whole 9 yards. Now the important word in that last sentence was had. Midday Saturday I got an email from ... read more

Michelin Star Count: Today 1; Trip 8 This morning started off with an in house English breakfast. The keepers of the cottage were nice enough to fill the fridge with lots of really good food so this morning when we had an early start I fired up the stove and made a bacon, egg, bean, sausage and tomato breakfast. When in Rome... We packed up and were on the road by 7:15 this morning on our way to Stonehenge. We have all seen pictures of it but until you are a few feet from a stone, you don’t really understand how big these 24 tonne chunks of stone are. Built around 2,500 BC, up to 100 strong men would have moved these stones by rolling them over logs into place. We still don’t quite know how ... read more

Michelin Star Count: Day 2: 4 Trip to date: 7 So after a good nights sleep (I actually slept for 8 hours - I cannot remember the last time that happened!) we got up had a light breakfast and headed down to the docks for a ride on the Thames. We spent about 2 hours riding up and down the Thames, seeing some really nice homes bordering the river and enjoying some cream scones. The British make a damn good scone! After the boat ride we disembarked at the Waterside Inn, a 3 Michelin star restaurant bordering the Thames here in Bray. This resto has had its 3 star rating for something like 20 years. 3 course tasting menu started with duck pate wrapped in pastry with pistachio nuts and foie gras. Normally not a big ... read more

So after an overnight flight we landed at Heathrow airport and promptly headed to Hertz to pick up our car, a Mercedes van. We show up to find about 25 people in front of us in line and a lunch reservation in about an hour. Grab phone, become Hertz gold member, go to gold booth and get our van and we are on the road. Now it has been 20 years since I have driven on UK roads and those around Heathrow are especially twisty. Couple wrong lefts in the roundabouts and voila! 270 degrees of turns and I am driving the right direction. We head immediately to Oxfordshire for a lunch at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons - two Michelin stars. A fantastically beautiful manor in the country serving some of the most amazing ... read more
