Rockin rhinos!





Today we finished the floor on each house. We shared our thoughts and feelings with our homeowners, many of us in tears with emotion. We presented them with a Bible, full of messages we had written. We also presented handmade moon and sun to decorate the front of the house. We then put our hands on the house- everyone- the family, the volunteers, the habitat staff, the masons, even neighbor children. And then we prayed. The Nicaraguans prayed the Lord's prayer in Spanish, the volunteers in English, in unison. To say it was moving is an understatement. Day one of the build. Our team members are chomping at the bit to get this work of building started. Half of us are dropped at the first location (Jenna's group aka Team Piranha) where we are building for Doris who is 35 and has 4 children. Then the second group is dropped at a house we are building for a young family (ages 17 and 22 with a 1 year old daughter). This is Erik's team - Team Ramrod. The greetings are shy. But the teams are ready for work. Everyone jumps in with much eagerness. The houses are being built right in the middle of an existing coimmunity. It's incredible to be building a house right in someone's backyard' complete with the faint smell of woodsmoke, cactus fencing, and barbed wire clothes lines. The ... read more

Wait a second. 2 more sleeps?!?! 2 MORE SLEEPS?! Ok, permission granted to freak out. The packing list seems a mile long, but I am supposed to pack light. Have I thought of all the loose ends and tied them as tightly as I possible can? What am I missing? Will the kids childcare transitions be smooth? Are the pets taken care of? Do I have adequate coverage at work? It's just too much! I know I'm missing something huge! Almost every day this week has started like this for me.
