hey all, after enduring the rain in gramado and canela on sunday, we hiked a bit on monday at parque do caracol, named for the waterfall that is the main attraction. because its so steep there are 927 steps you can take to hike down to the base of the waterfall. it was really cool - there is so much vapor at the base that we got pretty wet just standing there and watching. all the plants on the hillsides were green and wet (they reminded me of the produce section after the grocery store after the misters have turned on) and it smelled great because of the little flowers dotting the greenery. we saw a few humminbirds there as well, flitting about in the mist. in the afternoon we drove south through Novo Hamburgo to ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio Grande do Sul August 21st 2005

After floripa we went to Praia Grande (Big Beach), oddly named because its quite far inland and miles from anything more than a creek. Its the closest town near the Aparados da Serra, a national park in Rio Grande do Sul (the most southern state.) We stayed in an Albergue de Juventude (a youth hostel) that we highly recommend should any of you be along that way. Its an hour drive from Praia Grande along a rocky dirt road to the national park, but unforunately it was so cloudy and misty that once we got there saturday morning visibility was limited to about 30 feet - not good for viewing the amazing canyons that are the park´s main draw. Disappointed, we pressed on to Canela, so we could visit Parque do Rio Ferradura and Parque do ... read more

South America » Brazil » Santa Catarina » Florianópolis August 21st 2005

one day we drove to the south of the island and went to a beach accessible only by an hour long hike through heavily wooded mountains. The beach was called Lagoinha de Leste and as the name implies had a small lake nearby. It was cool, but crazy windy - we only saw a few other people there, though we noticed some tents tucked away in the woods. For photos see picutes 5-8... it was a great hike, and it was neat to be on a beach so remote...... read more

South America » Brazil » Santa Catarina » Florianópolis August 15th 2005

Faith again here. We drove to Florianopolis on sunday and went right on through. The capital of Santa Catarina, "Floripa" is half on the mainland and half on Ilha (Island) de Santa Catarina. Most of the Ilha is BEACHES and small towns supported by tourism. its the off season now, so we got a room with a porch facing Praia da Joaquina, on the east side of the island and facing open ocean. Praia da Joaquina hosts the Brazilian Surfing championships every year, so every day by 7 or 8am there would be twenty surfers in the water right by our hotel, and that number would grow and top out at about 50 or 60. The beach was pretty long - it took over 2 hours to walk to the end, one way - and there ... read more

South America » Brazil » Paraná » Curitiba August 9th 2005

Hey all, this is faith writing. i arrived in rio on the 9th and bru and i spent a night in rio. the waves were really big on the beach by our hotel, and there were tons of surfers out. We drove through sao paolo, spent a night on the road, and then arrived in Curitiba, the capital city of the state of Parana. We stayed at a hotel across from a park, and at the end of pedestrian mall. All day and into the evening the mall was filled with people shopping and eating at the sidewalk cafes, even when it dropped to the 50s at night. Good weather for sipping quentao - similar to mulled wine - and people watching. It gets dark around 6pm because its winter, but everyone stays outside to socialize, ... read more

South America » Brazil » Amazonas » Manaus August 7th 2005

The bus arrived in Manaus at 6 am. When I got out off the bus I had a temperature shock. It was so hot and humid at 6 am, I couldn’t imagine how it would be at noon. I had 21 hours to kill in Manaus before my flight to Belo Horizonte, the end of my trip. I had originally planned to take a boat down the Amazon River to Belem (4 days), and the bus from there to Belo Horizonte (3 days), but I have to be home before the end of the week, so I substituted a 4-hour flight for the 7-day land trip. Manuas is the only large city in the Amazon, with 1.5 million people. It lies by Rio Negro, which becomes Rio Amazonas just a few miles to the east. There ... read more

South America » Brazil » Roraima » Boa Vista August 1st 2005

Although Caracas wasn't at all appealing, after some time travelling you start appreciating different things and the usual turist stuff is not that interesting anymore. I think that's why I enjoyed the five days I stayed there, in spite of the ugly place. Eva was still too weak to take care of herself, so I stayed longer than I had originally planned. She was going to fly back to the Netherlands on July 31. We went back to the doctor several times to take more tests and by the time I left, on the 30th, she was a lot better. I had two options to get to Brazil from Caracas. There is a convenient and comfortable direct bus, with bed-like seats (buscama), but it would go through the south of Venezuela and north of Brazil, areas ... read more

South America » Venezuela » Capital » Caracas July 30th 2005

Caracas is an overcrowded and poluted city stuck in a valley between two mountain ranges. The traffic is horrible, the streets are dirty, the buildings are uggly and the center is loud. It is surrounded by endless slums where the huge black, indigenous and mixed population live. The center has a few nice colonial buildings that are very well preserved - about six of them. The other few hundred either look like old gigantic cardboard boxes or are new constructions that resulted from the combination of too much money and a lot of bad taste. One of the two tallest towers in the city caught fire and was never renovated, it is just a skelleton above the 20th floor or so. The country side is not any better. Through the endless bus trips I took I ... read more

South America » Colombia » Santa Marta July 25th 2005

Phil, Sjoerd and Paul left for a six day hike to ciudad perdida, the ruins of a pre-colombian city in the National Park of Tayrona. Eva and I didn't have six days to spare, so we stayed in Santa Marta hoping to go for a couple of days trip to the beaches in Tayrona. Things didn't go quite as we had planned. Eva started getting worse. The weakness became pain all over her body and and very high fever. We went to the doctor´s repeated times, but they couldn't figure out what was going on, just said it must be virus infection. Since it looked like we would be stuck in Santa Marta for at least a few days while Eva was recovering, I decided to take a four-day scuba diving course. The course was great, ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cartagena July 19th 2005

Cartagena is one of the most beautiful colonial cities I have seen. The old town is surrounded by a wall built by the Spanish to protect it from the many attacks from pirates. It was a main port to Spain during colonial times and goods from all over South America went through Cartagena, making it rich, but also a valuable target. Phil, Sjoerd, Paul, Eva and I left for Santa Marta after three days, Sjoerd was feeling much better, but Eva was giving signs of being sick, we were afraid that she had got whatever disease Paul had. ... read more
