One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel OK.

Growing up on a farm in rural Iowa, Thailand was always a country that seemed too exotic to be real. From pictures of beautiful white sand beaches littered with palm trees to the bright lights and tales of ping pong shows of Bangkok, it was certainly never a place I ever thought I would go. Despite all this, it wasn't until I was on the flight there that the excitement set in, and even then, I was a bit skeptical. Don't get me wrong, I knew I would have a great time, but what I didn't want was the (what is now becoming the ever-so-typical) Ko Pha Ngan experience, and I think some part of me was worried that Thailand had become so touristy and commercialized that it couldn't be escaped, especially when you only ... read more
Taiwan. Perhaps the most under-rated country in Asia. Everyone I've met since Arriving in Korea has expressed interest in traveling to Japan, China, and various Southeast Asia countries. I've met very few with Taiwan on the top of their list. Granted, there may not be as many notorious sites in Taiwan such as The Great Wall or Mount Fuji, but with that being said there are just as many stunningly beautiful and breath taking places in Taiwan as you'll find anywhere in Asia; without the crowds. I admit, I originally went to Taiwan because I couldn't get the vacation days I was hoping for and was forced to put my Cambodia trip on hold. I thought to myself, where the fuck can I go for 5 days? Taiwan was close, tropical, and a cheap plane ticket. ... read more
So it has been ages since I've added anything to my blog, and unlike previous entries I'm not going to attempt to sum everything up for you. This is partly because I can't possibly remember it all, but mainly because I just can't be bothered. Instead I'll try and highlight some of the more memorable experiences and let my photos do the talking. For all my friends who might be reading, I don't have any wild and crazy drunk experiences for you because I've been surprisingly tame these past few months. It's lame I know...I promise I'll do better for my next entry. Over the Children's Day holiday my gangsta ass bitch Jess and I headed East to Sokcho and Seoraksan National Park for a extended weekend of camping, hiking, and lounging on the beach. One ... read more
It's been so long since my last post I honestly have no idea about time or dates of any events, but once again, I'll do my best... As always I've stayed pretty busy on the weekends, getting out and seeing as much as I can. One of my roommates from grad school hooked me up with a friend she has in Korea and together we checked out Gyeongbok Palace. Despite the phony tourist bullshit, this place was really cool. It was originally constructed in 1394 and was the main and largest palace of the Joseon Dynasty. I've also made every attempt possible to get outside of Seoul as well. My favorite means of escape? Hiking. Korea has so many beautiful mountains and they are flooded with people on the weekends looking to get their hike ... read more
I' haven't exactly been on the ball with my blog lately, and combined with my AWESOME memory this one will more than likely have a few gaps. However, I'm going to attempt to summarize an eventful four weeks in one blog. I'll start with my second weekend in Korea we made the journey to Nami Island. I was unfamiliar with Nami before I visited, but to anyone who is familiar with Korean drama's, specifically "Winter Sonata" will know it well. Nami, like almost everywhere else in Korea, is a couples scene, where lovers go to show off their relationship to the masses and reminisce over images from the original sappy-ass Korean mini series. We started the trip just walking around, taking in the sites, and at some point a camera crew spotting the "waygooks" and forced ... read more
So today was my Kindergarten students graduation. While I've only been with them a week, I'm actually going to miss the lil buggers because they are so freaking sweet. It was one of those experiences where you try and go the whole day without laughing because you couldn't believe what was actually happening, but you hold back out of respect because you know this is how they do things. For example, in between the parents holding up signs like we were at a sporting event, music ranging from the 20th Century Fox theme, the James Bond and Mission Impossible themes, and yes, even the Adam's family theme, I found myself dieing at the sheer ridiculousness of the children's costumes, dance numbers, and their own version of one of my favorite childhood stories, Pinocchio. With that being ... read more
Where to start? How about with my AWESOME 24 hour flight (on which I did not sleep because I was neither hungover or drunk) to South Korea from Des Moines International Airport. Yes, Des Moines has an international airport, we fly to Canada and shit. My first flight was from DM to Chicago on what appeared to be a 8 passenger plane that they managed to squeeze another 12 on, and was fortunate enough to sit next to the ONLY lady on the flight who was scared shitless of being in the air, and just preceded to have a temper tantrum the ENTIRE FLIGHT while balls deep in her prayers to our Lord and Savior. About 25 min. into the journey she noticed that I was not praying, and took that as her sign that ... read more
