Minehead, Somerset, England to Chepstow, Wales Today we enter Wales! Up early, we were trying to avoid traffic on A 39, but I think we both are finally beginning to get used to driving on the left and the need to go slow and wait for larger vehicles to go ahead. This is the way things are done here. The Cardiff area is very busy this weekend--some sort of auto race, so we called the Info Center in Chepstow and Liz was mort helpful. She suggested a B & B that has a field for caravans (that is our name in [View Full Entry]

June 24, 2008 Venton Woodland Springs Touring Park to Barnstable Woodland Spring Touring Park is close to the edge of Dartmoor NP exit. A short hike to Spinsters Rock was our first order of business. Spinsters Rock is a Neolithic remain from about 3,500 years ago. Probably a Burial Ground and it would have had a mound, long gone. In the mid 1800's the top of the rock fell off and was replaced in the same year. However tradition has it, that three spinsters replaced the rock, and obviously they were Witches! Today the Spinsters Rock is a meadow enjoyed by [View Full Entry]

June 23, 2008 Okehampton to Dartmoor National Park, England Up early to shop before we leave for our hike. I have learned shopping at Marks and Spenser is an expensive deal, so we look for Tesco, or Somerfield for food shopping. Dartmoor National Park is England's greatest expanse of wilderness, some 365 square miles of raw granite and heather-growth moor. The hike today meets at Shapley Common a Parking Area in the park and is scheduled to leave at 11:30. The cost for the guided hike is 6.50 pounds unless you arrive by public transportation, then just present you bus ticket. [View Full Entry]

June 21, 2008 City center of Cheltenham, walk to Prestbury and a long walk around the Racecourse It is another rainy morning in England. So we are off to do some shopping, and organizing. After lunch we thought we would walk to Prestbury, the next village. We stopped at a local Pub and enjoyed the local ambiance. Then returned to walk around the huge racecourse, its about a five mile walk. Of course it is closed for the season, but after an hour or so of walking, we found ourselves trapped in the locked racecourse. We finally found our way out [View Full Entry]

June 20, 2008 Cheltenham to Bath( and home) We began today with a bus ride to Cheltenham rail station, then took the train to Bristol and transferred to the train for Bath. At the Info Office Wednesday, the gal told us about a free walking tour of Bath, it begins at 10:30 AM. So we were there with time to spare and visited the Bath Abbey before hand. Its construction was originally started as a Catholic Church but the timing was bad. Henry VIII had his quarrel with the Pope and construction was stopped. It eventually was finished as the parish [View Full Entry]

June 19, 2008 Cheltenham Racecourse Ready for our hike, we took the bus to the town center and walked to another bus to go to Winchcomb. After boarding the bus, we were inundated with hikers coming on ... with backpacks and hiking poles, etc. " Who are you folks and where are you going?" we had to ask. When we heard they were "Ramblers"... we felt at home. They explained all about the Ramblers in Britain, and we talked about the Ramblers in Pittsburgh. After all was said and done, we were invited to join their hike. Since we were still [View Full Entry]

Chris, our contact, was most helpful and ready to fix the wounded "Bothan". While work was being done on the vehicle, we got a ride into Witney for a walk... in the rain. The RV is all fixed....and would you believe... less than 1/2 mile from"home" on yet another narrow road... a "Lorry" [View Full Entry]

SORRY ABOUT THE MISSING PHOTOS WE MISS PLACED THEM bOB June 15, 2008 Dover to Bladon--Black Horse Campground The drive on the highway from Dover to Bladon was straightforward, however, getting into the villages with the ever narrowing "carriage ways" was a bit of a "sticky wicket"! With the steering wheel on the right and driving on the left side, it leaves the passenger position vulnerable. We found our way to Bladon Chains Campground and settled in. We strolled into Woodstock for lunch, but being Father's Day many restaurants were booked. So we settled for Pub food. How [View Full Entry]

June 14, 2008 Black Horse Camping Densole, England This campground isn't the most friendly or helpful. In spite of this, we figured the bus system and started off to see the White Cliffs of Dover. It buses route involved a transfer at the village of Folkston onto Dover. After we paid round trip on bus one, we learned we could have obtained an all day ticket, on and off anywhere in the area. Now we know. The bus driver suggested we walk over to the cliffs and have a cup of tea, look over to France, and decide if we wanted [View Full Entry]
