At least once a day in China, I feel like I'm going to die. We arrived in Xi'an in the evening on the 19th. We got off to a rocky start - first we were duped into taking a "taxi" with these pretend taxi drivers. They basically use their own cars, charge a flat rate (no meters), and do the trips as fast as they can. We were taken across entire airport parking lot looking for the taxi vehicle to arrive at a family mini van, we then learned that they were going to put more people in the vehicle as well, making twice the money on one run... clever... However, Binnson was pretty sure we were about to be murdered. He kept watch on the back seat while I kept watch on the people in ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Forbidden City June 18th 2010

Today we completed the rest of the super touristy area's in Beijing. We started off at the Forbidden City. To be honest - I thought it would be a lot more interesting. Buuttttt it wasn't really. Just some more red buildings with the fancy roofs and the blue paint, etc, etc... Binnson seemed interested when the guide was talking about the Emperor having 3000 wives that he could pick and choose from whenever he wanted. Next stop, Tienanmen square... we walked through the square and took a couple pictures. It's eerie to walk through, not that our guide breathed a word about anything other than the good events that occur there. Afterward, we went to a Chinese Herbal Medicine center. Here a doctor took our pulse and looked at our tongues and faces and determined what ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Great Wall of China June 17th 2010

We decided to take a tour out to the Great Wall of China and the Ming Tombs. Bright and early in the morning we awaited the arrival of our tour. The van was late and we thought we had been forgotten or that we had booked a non-existent tour but they finally showed and we were on the road! Binnson was still mad because he ended up missing breakfast. Our tour consisted of only 5 people, an Indonesian couple from Holland, and a professor from Indiana. First stop was the Ming Tombs... kinda boring but we took a couple pictures and wandered around the museum. Next we went to a jade factory. There we were suckered into buying these personalized stamp things that you will now see on every card/letter you ever receive from us from ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Olympic Park June 16th 2010

We flew from Shenzhen to Beijing early yesterday morning. Upon arrival, Yoyo and Wonder's friend, Suzanna and her husband, picked us from the airport to take us to our hotel. They only spoke Mandarin so it was real test of our non-translational and body language reading skills. We had no idea what the hell was going on. We were turned away from the hotel that Binnson's relatives had originally made reservations for us at because ''we were foreigners''.... in other words - Binns would have got in just fine if he didn't have his white girlfriend along. Its funny how he is always treated as a local - I keep getting put into lines for foreigners and whatever English people know gets spoken to me, while Binnson is filed in with the regulars and gets spoken ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island » Stanley June 14th 2010

We headed back to HK this morning. When we finally arrived around 1:30-2pm-ish, after being stuck in immigration for hours, we went for breakfast/lunch at a ritzy downtown hotel's buffet. SOOOO GOOOD!!!!!!!!! We seem to be in the constant state of feasting. I thought for sure this trip would be the weight loss solution I have been searching for... WRONG. We have both probably gained a hundred pounds since we've gotten here. Always always always eating. After lunch we grabbed a bus to Hong Kong Island (you drive in a tunnel under the ocean instead of taking the ferry) and went to the Stanley Market. We wandered around the shops and ventured out around the ocean and piers there. It was too humid for my camera when we got off the bus so I only got ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Lantau Island June 13th 2010

We ventured into Hong Kong from Shenzhen by train today. Our gracious hosts lead us through the busy train stations and showed us through immigration. By the end of this trip I am going to have no pages left for stamps in my passport - we get 4 stamps everytime we leave and enter Hong Kong and China! We boarded a ferry in Hong Kong out to Hong Kong Island and then another out to Lantau Island. Here the big attraction is the giant buddha. It is the largest bronze sitting buddha. However, it was very foggy when we got there and we couldn't see him very well. After taking some pictures and having a HUGE vegetarian meal at this buddhist place, we climbed the stairs up to the buddha to see if we could get ... read more

Asia » China » Guangdong » Shenzhen June 11th 2010

Well day 1 in China has been fairly low key. After discussing how we were going to go about our trip in China with Binnson's relatives and watching their maid hand wash my underwear on the balcony (...awkward...) we were off for lunch. We hit up this very nice dim sum place where a local Chinese actor was sitting at the table beside us. Not bad for my first meal in China. Afterwards, we went downtown so Binnson could get a new fobby haircut. We then ended up at a big shopping mall and got what seem to be good hiking sandals for 258 RMB (~50 CND for both pairs). Cheapy cheapy. What I have learned so far: 1. All my chinese lessons were a waste of time. I understand nothing. 2. The rules of the ... read more

Asia » China » Guangdong » Shenzhen June 10th 2010

After 26 hours of flights + layovers, we finally landed in Hong Kong. And after two hours and two "RANDOM" custom border inspections on our way to Shenzhen, China- (thanks to Cheryl), we finally made it to my relatives place. Hurray for free accomodations! Now to unpack, shower, and pass out.... read more
