The Malaysia/Singapore border crossing station is huge and beautiful! It was almost like walking through two brand new airports, their efficiency was incredible with tons of que’s- the wait was nothing. Comparatively- the China/Vietnam station where you cram into a tiny hot sweaty room, throw your passports into a stack of other passports and then crowd around a window for an hour uncomfortably with a bunch of other people waiting to hear your name so you can get your passport back and cross the border. First impressions of Singapore were that it was the least Asian city of all of Asia. Everything is in English, everyone speaks English, and the only thing Asian about it is that the population is 75% Chinese. We hopped off the bus in the blistering heat and grabbed a cab to ... read more

From Ao Nang we crammed into a minivan full of people to Hat Yai and a few hours later we were off loaded to wait for our bus to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We had a couple hours to spare so we walked down the street from the bus station, went to a mall, and then grabbed some groceries. By groceries, I mean the usual: pocky, chips, and some ultra healthy chocolate oat milk and corn milk for an ounce of nutrients. Bus trip days are always the worst for our diet, the further the distance - the worse it gets! We always buy bread and peanut butter for a quick sandwich and a ton of water but never drink it because we might need to go pee at the nasty bus stations, systematic dehydration starts the ... read more

It was time to leave Phi Phi for Ao Nang. We packed our stuff and headed for the boat which took us to Krabi Port. We took a bus into Krabi town which dropped us off at some random guest house and we were off to find a way to Ao Nang. We were about to head to the main bus station, which was about a 7 km walk, when some random Aussie woman on a scooter informed us of where we needed to go to catch a ride to Ao Nang. We automatically trusted her because she didn’t seem local. The cheapest and most efficient way of getting to Ao Nang from where we were was to take a Songthaew(a pick-up truck with benches on either side of the box) for 50 Baht each. Sounded ... read more

We took an overnight bus from Bangkok to Phuket, we had booked through an agency near Khao San Rd even after the countless Lonely Planet warnings not to- welllll, guess we should have listened! Around 5:30am we were dropped off at a town called Surat Thani. From here, the passengers are to be divided into smaller minivans to get to their final destination. We sat in a bus station and watched the Jackass reruns on TV until we were put into a smaller bus to Phuket at 7am. They drove us around the corner and about 30 seconds after getting in, we were told to get out and take our stuff and wait outside another travel agency. Everyone was asking what time we would be leaving and why we were stopped again and no one would ... read more

Our scheduled six hour bus ride from Siem Reap to Bangkok turned into a 12 hour mess. The trip to the Thai border wasn’t too bad, but it definitely wasn’t very well organized. They basically dumped us off at the border and told us to find them on the other side. After we figured out our way through the border, they pushed us into these little sardine cans they called minibuses and dropped us off at some random hotel. They left us there for like three hours so we ended up getting something to eat- the bus company probably makes some sort of commission there. We were on our way to Bangkok again hours later on a crappier bus with no AC that stunk like feet and outhouses. I got stuck at the back of the ... read more

Our guesthouse in Phnom Penh had a sister guesthouse in Siem Reap with rooms at similar rates ($8 USD/night), so we arranged our stay through them. We booked a bus there and the guesthouse in Siem Reap sent a tuk-tuk to pick us up from the bus station when we arrived. It all went very smoothly and we were glad to have everything taken care of for us. After freshening up, we headed down to the in-house restaurant for dinner. Its a small open-air restaurant with a free pool table, cable TV, and a few hammocks around the perimeter. When we went down it was absolutely pouring rain outside, I have really never seen rain SO heavy, torrential downpour. We ordered some meals that normally take about 10-15 minutes to make and about an hour later ... read more

We had a rough start to our trip to Cambodia trying to leave Ho Chi Minh City. We had booked an 8:30am bus to Phneom Penh and arrived at the travel agency around 8:10-8:15am, the lady we had booked the bus with lead us down the street towards a group of buses and checked us in with another travel company outside and told us to sit down as they would tell us to get on the bus in 5 or 6 minutes. She then wished us a good trip and walked back to the agency from which she worked. We waited outside this other agency for a while before someone asked to see our ticket, when I gave it to her she right away asked where I had bought it, telling us there is no 8:30am ... read more

The last couple days of our Vietnam trip have been spent checking out the sites in Ho Chi Minh City. We took a day bus here from Nha Trang arriving fairly late, after finding our hotel and grabbing a bite to eat in the touristy district, we headed back for an early night. I woke up next morning with several mosquito bite marks on my foot. It was probably pissed off at me trying and failing to kill it the night before. The following day was spent trying to cram every tourist activity possible into one day. We managed to check out the Mariamman Hindu Temple, the War Remnants Museum, the Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Reunification (Independence) Palace. The temple wasn’t all too exciting, which was probably why there were no admission fees. The War ... read more

Our last day in Hoi An was spent walking around in old town and eating as much ice cream as humanly possible. Not because it was cheap either ($1USD for a little scoop), just because we felt like it. Haha. Binnson finally caved and purchased the prized conical hat despite my warnings that he is going to throw it in a river in 2 days after trying to carry it around with us. We boarded a "sleeper bus" to Nha Trang in the evening. Don't let the term SLEEPER confuse you. There will be no sleeping on this bus. We were the last one's to get picked up so we were lucky to still be able to get seat/bed things that were beside each other however, we were seated right behind the bus driver on the ... read more

Our adventure to Hoi An from Cat Ba Island had us taking a bus-boat-bus combo back to Hanoi and catching a train from there to Da Nang. Our room in the train car slept 6 people, 3 levels of bunk beds beside each other. When we first walked in with our packs on we had to reverse ourselves back out as the 2 of us standing there filled the car and we could not turn around with the packs on. It was a little tight. We had the "luck" of getting the very top bunk - claustrophobic's would not fare well here. There is enough space to lay down, that's it! But there are some pro's - we had these compartments at the top to store our bags, people on the 2nd level had to share ... read more
