Left a sunny Embrun & climbed & climbed & passed cars coming down from the mountains covered in snow; oh dear...we hadn't brought snow chains as they weren't compulsory post 15thApril, mmm. Anyway, sunny & warm but at the top it was +1, low freezing cloud with skiers everywhere. A terrific road on the French side, just like the Italian job oddly. On the Italian side – mainly tunnels. Notable difference – French, sweeping roads, beautiful views; Italian, straight under it so we can drive fast! So, into tunnel in clouds & freezing, out of tunnel clear & +9... Another management decision to use Autostrada to bypass Torino (think Birmingham but with Armani) which was very industrialised as expected (home of Fiat?) Interesting – came from Gallic shrugs & Gaulloises to manic drivers & hand gesticulations, ... read more

All good ish in the morning, stopping at a Super U for supplies near Grenoble. Earlier we'd followed the signs to a local supermarket in a nearby town..we ended up in the market place, all roads were one way & 4 inches wider than Billy the Bus..we made it out having had to fold in one of the wing mirrors & Cathy hanging out of the window to check the clearance on her side...sweaty palms. We took the peage again to clear the Grenoble & then off into the Alps proper. A beautiful road up the pass with just stunning views both up & down the mountains. Stopped for lunch at Rochetaillee which had a very futuristic automated toilet in the rest area. Just saying.. Then off again...only to find out 15 miles further on that ... read more

Ooops yesterday was day 5...hey Management decision to take the peage to get us to & through Lyon ( aka Lion on satnav). Some great places on the way down to the motorway - Gamay, Montrachet, Beaune, Beaujolais..mmm! It rained. Then post peage to Vienne & satnav took us up a very steep hill, a very narrow road with hairpin bends to 500 metres above the Rhone – could have been more interesting if more than cars had come the other way..hey ho. Cathy, please give me some notice of hairpins on a 1 in 3 gradient? Lovely camp site by a river. Discovered post check in that the site is liable to flash floods & to exit on foot if the alarm is raised...hahaha! Mais oui – non! Tomorrow to Briancon & Les Alpes – ... read more

Cool start but warm enough for an al fresco breakfast. Decided to stay a day here as it was so nice. Bikes out & off to a lake outside Saulieu then on to a village with an old chateau (a cross between a chateau & a mill/brewery) & menhir. A long drag back so stopped for a cheese & fig baguette (Cathy) & a jambon presille for me. Ordered lunch in my brilliant school boy French only then to discover the Maitre D was from Beverley, N. Yorkshire, not far from where we lived in Wilberfoss! She made me suffer....small world eh? Decided to change plan for tomorrow as it was a bit too far to Briancon in one go – going to St Alban de Vareze instead. Thursday without Arthur...... read more

Shorter drive today & Cathy soon panicking as satnav closed down. Not plugged in correctly, so fine in the end. (I love her dearly, but searching for inner peace) This is a landscape of huge proportions – loads of wind turbines, enormous fields with machinery to match, straight roads that stretch for miles & beautiful old villages suffering from the march of time...but vineyards! 28 degs today – glorious! Camp site in a National Park – deserted save for 6 pitches & we being the only Brits..yay!... read more

Awoke to a beautiful morning having slept until 8am, unusual for us but clearly due to the hilarity of the previous day. A very long drive today, 214 miles, not using peage but pleasant enough. Camp site was 'municipale' but excellent especially as they sold pink champagne & had to help the local economy of course. Haven't seen a single vine yet.. Cathy still looking for her charger, me for inner peace...... read more

Down to the ferry port, through passport control & ooops, missed the allocated lane due to poor signposting (honestly) like another couple in their RV. I thought, sod this, did a u-turn thinking that there had to be a way back which there was, et voila – sorted. Our partners in crime carried on & were embarrassingly escorted back with flashing lights..ha ha! Little things.. Things were going smoothly, mill pond crossing too. Off the ferry, through customs & Cathy hit the satnav to take to the next camp site. Five minutes later, oh dear...we're on a one way trip to the Eurotunnel entrance. I thought, sod this, did a turn into a pet sanctuary thinking that there had to be a way back which there was, et voila – sorted. (Sound familiar?) That was a ... read more

So, after an 8 o'clock Communion service (much praying for safety!) which had us up bright & early, the time came to go. A peculiar feeling in that this wasn't just a holiday, it was the start at least for us, an adventure lasting nearly 5 months. The start of the road trip – 2 years in the making, with the first idea thinking that it would be a great idea once Cathy had retired to drive down to the apartment in Cyprus – was here & real. As we left, our main thoughts were that we'd miss the 'children'.... but especially young Arthur & also that we were so grateful to all those who were helping out whilst we were away: you know who you are! Our trip south was uneventful to a nice camp ... read more
