Discovered that staying near a lagoon means...mosquitoes. A few bites each – little buggers, these ones you don't feel land even with hairy legs & I didn't feel them either. Also discovered that the idiot driver scuffed the side of the Billy with his van mirror though it should come off with T cut. Lovely drive around the coast of Promontorio del Gargano, through Umbria Forest. Windy road up & down with beautiful scenery & views. We were intending to stop & stay at Vieste but for whatever reason Cathy didn't like the area probably because there were a couple of ne're do wells in the town car park...so on we went. Pretty glad we did too as this site (Lido Salpi) is lovely! 50M from a beautiful beach & very well looked after; the Caravan ... read more

Lazy start to the day, saw our neighbours off & decided to cycle the other ay up the coast as it was so flat. This is like the land that time forgot, the back end of nowhere like parts of Norfolk & Lincolnshire...give me a high 6... Got to the next small town & my bike started to make some odd noises which I guessed was a loose spoke. Tightened one up & off again – only for the noise effects to get worse. Stopped & realised that the wheel was moving side to side slightly – meaning the cone holding the bearings to the rear wheel were comimng loose. So, wheel off & tightened them up as best I could without the proper tools & off we go again. Just the same, so we abandoned ... read more

Switched on the Dyson & travelled through 2 Italian regions today as we head south towards the 'heel' of Italy. This is another amazing road in that the views are just stunning. To our left, the snow capped mountains of the Grand Sasso & to our right the shimmering water of the Adriatic coupled with some of the highest viaducts we have ever seen followed by lots of tunnels. The whole area is a patchwork of olive & lemon groves & vines. We came off the autostrada to follow the coastal road to the next site. Whilst the nearby village is called Cagnano Varono, the site is on basically a spit of sandy land which encloses a lagoon – Lago di Varano. ...& then some idiot Italian in a delivery van came hurtling down the road ... read more

Leisurely brekkers. Talking to a German chap & to cut a long story short he has an apartment in N. Cyprus too...in Lapta! Again, a small world. On the bikes, down the hill, under the railway & then cycled for ages down the coast next to the sea on a cycle / walking path all the way down to Grottemarre – unfortunate name but a nice place. A restaurant every 20 yards. Cycled back & had lunch of fresh pizza from a lovely shop but resisted the lovely sweet pastries. Back to Billy & read, snoozed & washed the filthy bikes – Cathy read GH. Had tea but put stuff away as now it rains, not a lot but enough to force us inside. I was musing, Cathy has a real problem with technical stuff & ... read more

Happy St. Georges Day – forgot to bring my flag. Forgot to mention that the little town mentioned yesterday has a wild west festival this coming weekend – being rounded off on Sunday by the highlight of some unknown group singing & line dancing; Friday & Saturday must be awe inspiring... Another short trip down the coast to break the journey to what we hope will be the forrested site. This site is marginally better than last night...again there is one other pitch being used by an elderly couple from Milan, but at least they're dressed. Stopped at a supermarket in the morning & a marina for lunch. We came off the autostrada to use the 'A' road – but there are so many small, lineated towns that it was taking forever, so we went back ... read more

An uneventful journey across to Rimini to a small town just north. A 'seaside' town – imagine Bridlington on a wet November Wednesday. This is the same except it's 28 degs – all the hotels, shops, bars & cafes are closed for the off season. We found the site easily enough but thankfully only staying here one night. Surrounded by (closed) hotels & housing but it's quiet enough, until the trains thunder past every 20 mins or so...do they run at night I wonder...? Anyway, jumped on the bikes to look around the place – didn't take that long... we did find a little bar open where we had a terrific pizza, a Limoncello on the house & a doggy bag. Mind you the beer price would have seemed expensive in Chelsea. Back to site, read ... read more

A beautiful sunrise seen from the roof light over the cab (I should say at this point that Billy has an electric drop down bed in the centre so when we wake, we open the blind to the roof light & see what's what) Coupled with the birds singing, it was glorious. Had brekkers, put more washing on & read whilst that finished, put more on then assembled stuff to go out for a walk. Discovered meanwhile that the old chap behind us & an elderly couple about 20 yards away, who had arrived earlier, were now starkers. Each to their own... Carla came over & gave us a key to the campsite – they were off to take their friends/family (who had been helping prepare the site) to the airport – let yourself in & ... read more

No sign of charger or inner peace, but a very cold morning that focused the mind. Bought milk, bottled water & apricot croissants & asked M. to release our electric hook up. He offered me a big hit of caffiene which I politely refused..He zoomed over on an electric scooter shouting 'I am Valentino Rossi' as if everyone should know him...I did of course! Dumped the on board water. Went to settle up & he gave us a bottle of really good local red wine – such a shame that Cathy doesn't drink red! Hands still smell of TCP. Left Asti – then after 10 k saw a sign for a (quote) 'sexy shop' in the middle of nowhere; at the corner of the crossroads was a lady ( a loose description?), sat on a chair ... read more
