Big Si

I graduated from university in June 2005 and felt the urge to travel. I decided with a little help from my friends, formed after many a drunken student night together, to make a pact with them to see the world.
Thinking it could be the last chance before the "real world" takes a hold of me a 'round the world' ticket has been purchased and the world is my oyster!

YOU CAN CHECK OUT THE VIDEO OF WHEN I ARRIVED HOME, JUST AROUND HERE SOMEWHERE So now I'm sat here after a wonderful Christmas, re-united with my family in Gatley pondering about my future and what's next for my wery head. Christmas was great and served the much needed excitment to keep my brain active not to dwell on the wonderful times of the past, yet at the same time able to relay stories to my family that keep them on edge. I've been suffering from some pretty horrible jet-lag which has made me very dazed for the last week and making me fall asleep at strange times and then wake up at even weirder times, other than that my head is in a spin. How can I possibly adjust instantly to this huge life ... read more

From San Diego we rented a car from Enterprise for a much more reasonable price than the one we rented to drive to Vegas in. From San Diego we headed north to a little surf town called Huntington Beach, in the O.C., just south of Los Angeles. Here I managed to do some communicating with my brother and get us a few free nights sleep with a friend of his called Matt who lived in Huntington Beach. I had spent some time with him when I worked in London and he had actually spent his last Christams at my house, taking my seat! Matt was incredibly hospitable and let us stay for 3 nights in his lovely home. He also gave us directions each day for the places we wanted to go and see. For example ... read more

Ok so we made it alive after our hurtling journey to the airport and safely found ourselves a hostel in Dowtown San Francisco. On the second night of our stay there we went to a Chinese/Vietnamese resturaunt called The House of NanKing, it was seriously good food! There was a picture of Jamie Oliver on the wall and as I say the food was exquisite and came at a very low price considering how much we got... good old American portions! After two nights in the Downtown hostel we moved out to Fisherman's wharf in a place called Fort Mason which had good views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz based up on top of a hill. Once we'd settled in we walked around the Fisherman's wharf area, which was pretty much stereotypicaly San Francisco-an; ... read more

After our long and very boring wait in Tahiti airport we eventually boarded our flight to LAX. As we flew in over the unbelieveably vast city that is Los Angeles; views of skyscrapers and the Hollywood sign hit home to my island thinking mind that this was going to be quite a culture shock. SHORT BUT SWEET IN L.A. We arrived in LAX with only a name of a hostel and not a lot else. Luckily for us, and unexpectedly, an English guy was waiting there to pick up the stray backpackers and take us to the Orbit hostel, based in West Hollywood and not far from the Sunset strip. The huge roads, the large in-your-face advertisements, the famous land-marks and the variety of LA people on the streets was a far cry from those lazy ... read more

We'd been informed that Tahiti was extremely expensive so we were very wary of how this would effect our miniature budget. When we arrived at the airport at 1am it seemed ridiculous to pay for somewhere to sleep for only a few hours so we made ourselves comfortable on the floor in the airport lying on our sleeping bags and using our bags as pillows. It was very uncomfortabel and when the large fan above my head turned on I was being blown strongly in the face which meant I had a pretty rubbish night's sleep. When morning came and the airport came to life we began our tired adventure to another Island called Moorea, where we'd heard it was cheaper and nicer. It was 6am when we began the adventure so the island had only ... read more

So it's the Saturday 11th November, exactly one year on from when I was sat in Heathrow about to start this huge adventure. Today I'm sat in Nadi airport to catch a flight to Rorotonga a small little Island, part of the Idilic Cook Islands in the middle of the South Pacific. I arrived in Rarotonga on Friday 10th November. Extremely confusing for you as it is for me. By travelling this way around the world we have managed to gain a day in our trip by crossing the Dateline, therefore we celebrate being away for a year not once but twice. I am now writing in past tense as it was a very long time ago since I was actually in Raro'. What did we do in Raro?? To be honest not very much. When ... read more

The Yasawa's consist of a group of islands northwest of the mainland of Fiji. Everything was booked and we had a pass to hop between 4 islands; Nanuya Lai Lai, Naviti, Kuata and Beachcomber. After one night in Nadi in a very nice hotel (Nadi Bay Hotel) we were picked up early, 7:30am, and taken to the port to begin our island hopping on a large yellow boat with AWESOME ADVENTURES printed in large letters all over it. NANUYA LAILAI; Sunrise lodge. Our first stop was at the Sunrise lodge. After following a young man, Vassou, across the island to the lodge 30mins away, leaving beind a stunning blue lagoon where we arrived. We walked into a very rugged and very basic resort, as we'd been informed when we booked it, that the further north we ... read more

We arrived into Nadi airport on the mainland of Fiji to a with a welcoming of... rain! As we'd heard from a few other people the weather in Fiji wasn;t very good t the moment, but hoping for fantastic weather affter some cold weather in Fiji we couldn't help being dissapointed. Ah well, the welcoming of singing and guitar playing from four men dressed in hawaiian shirts (or Bula shirts as their known here) brightened our arrival. After a long journey through customs we were greeted by a Fijian lady presenting us with a lei; a necklace made of lots of tiny shells on fishing wire. She lead us to a bus stop out side of the airport grounds where we saw our first sights of Fiji; stray dogs, rugged huts, strange smells and nothing westernised. ... read more

SATURDAY - Rainy day at the islands. We arrived in to Paihia where the weather was over cast and rained on and off all day. Never-the-less we pondered about town looking at the shops and inquiring into conditions and prices for swimming with dolphins the last big thing to do before we leave New Zealand. SUNDAY - The calming qualities of swimming with Dolphins. We were up early and after some thinking time about the weather we decided to go for it and booked ourselves onto the King’s dolphin’s boat tour for $89. At 9:30am we boarded the boat and set sail out into the Bay of Islands and the grey skies. We approached one pod of dolphin’s that had a baby Dolphin with them, which meant we couldn’t swim with them, but they are still ... read more

SUNDAY 15th - Thermal waters. After the excitement of the Skydiving we felt a need to relax and enjoy some of the area’s thermal pools. Heading out of Taupo on the hunt for a place called Kerosene creek with no real idea of what to expect? - A swimming pool? A clear blue pool? A Small creek? Or a complex that we had to pay for? After an hour or so driving we got to a little gravel track leading down to Kerosene creek, but the signposting soon finished and we drove way past the pool only to have to back track and park in the car park we some how missed on entry. No such complex was in sight only a little path leading through the bush and down to a creek (stream) where steam ... read more
