The Internship Begins I have begun my work as an intern with CAREF (Servicio Ecuménico de Apoyo y Orientación a Migrantes y Refugiados), and suddenly my life in Argentina is dramatically different. It's nice, though, to have a purpose again and a place to report each morning promptly at 9 AM. The First Week An introductory meeting to the agency involved the director Gabriela, her assistant Carmen and myself. Over a single cup of Mate passed back and forth between the three of us (as is the custom here), Gabriela and Carmen explained the history of immigration in Argentina along with CAREF's role in this arena over the past 20 years. CAREF has long been an integral player in the resettlement of refugees and in helping migrants navigate the entanglement of immigration law in Argentina. The ... read more

Theatre Saw Cibrian-Mahler's Dracula at the Opera Theatre last weekend. The show was written and performed in Spanish, and the music was incredible. Nothing on the Broadway scale or anything like that, but still it was entertaining if you like musicals. Check out the website: http://www.cibrianmahler.com.ar/ Tango I took a tango class last week. More on this later. I intend to continue with classes as time permits. Fútbol Last night I attended my first partido de fútbol (Argentine Soccer Game). Two of my roommates' friends took me to the game. What they say about Argentines and their love of soccer is true. These people are truly fanatics. Much like the student section at an LSU game, the fans don't sit or stop singing chants until the game is over. Friends My roommate Agustina has been including ... read more

A summary of the trip to Mendoza: While Akshay, my fellow classmate at the Buenos Aires Language Centre, turned out to be a not so great photographer, he proved himself a very calm and easy going travel companion in Mendoza. We spent five days total in Mendoza, and I will quickly recount the highlights. Overnight Bus Ride From BA to Mendoza- The overnight "Suite" bus is the way to go when traveling long distances in Argentina! Twelve hours of my life have never passed so quickly, and I would not have been more comfortable at home in my own bed than I was on that Chevallier suite-bus, where the magic seats transformed into overly cushioned beds at lights out time. During transport and just as the movie began to play, dinner and wine were served along ... read more

Just A Quick Update on Life in Buenos Aires: Another week down, and a very busy one at that, marked by adventure, a few episodes of loneliness here and there, and, of course, the terrifying yet thrilling unknown. Exploring more of the city and preparing for my internship has occupied the majority of my time. This week I located the agency where I will intern and did a practice run on the bus in getting there easily from my house. Spanish class continues to keep me busy; although, I must admit, I am happy to have a break for few days. I decided earlier in the week that I would take a trip to Mendoza, an Argentine province situated at the foot of The Andes. Departing Buenos Aires this evening at 8 PM, I will travel ... read more

A random summary of my first week in BA (this may be a little disparate and unorganized..internet cafes will do that to you!!): Arrival: I arrived without a hitch in Buenos Aires on the morning of January 5, 2007. On the plane ride over, crammed in like a sardine next to a very nice Argentine man named Gustavo, who was more than eager to help me warm up my Spanish, it finally hit me that I was actually on my way to the magnificent Argentina once again. I began to fantasize about the work I would be doing in my internship, the house I would call home for the next five months, the friends I might make, etc. I was so excited that I could hardly sleep-the chatty Gustavo was not helping the situation either. Then ... read more
