Italietta’s birthday! Miguel’s brother, Giacomo, and his wife Francesca came to Verona to celebrate Italietta’s birthday. We all missed Martina, but it was nice to have the immediate family all together to celebrate Italietta’s 80th birthday. It was also my brother’s birthday. Mike is fifty years old today, and he was born just a few kilometers from Verona, in a town called Vicenza. We all lived here on a street called Via Marsela, just about one kilometer away from the center of Verona. Strange to think that I lived in this town 50 years ago! I have some memories of the town, particularly of the hill where our old apartment building still stands, and the view of Verona from the top of the hill. I also remembered a park we called “Bambini Park” which is still ... read more

We arrived in Verona early in the afternoon, after a short train trip from Venice. Verona is so different from Venice: cleaner, less crowded, with more open spaces and amazing Roman theater. We all fell in love with the beauty of Verona and it’s gorgeous Roman walls and 13th century buildings and piazzas. Liliana’s father and grandmother had arrived in Verona on the night before, so we met them at the hotel Accademia, which is right in the center of the old town. We walked to a cafe for lunch and then came back to the rooms to rest before going out to La Traviata later in the evening. The girls “napped” for about 3 and a half hours. We woke them up for a relatively early dinner (7:30 pm is early for dinner in Italy) ... read more

We had a wonderful day today. The weather was a bit cooler than it has been -- maybe it was just that there was less humidity, but it was definitely more comfortable. And this evening, the weather was fresh and breezy -- almost like Hawaii weather! We started the day by walking from our B&B to the Rialto and purchasing gifts for friends and family. I also bought some Venetian Carneval masks for each of the girls -- even though it may be a bit of a pain to carry them back to the US, they are so beautiful and the girls looked great in them. They can hang them on their wall when they get home. After shopping, we ate lunch at a little spot called the Corner Pub, near the Peggy Guggenheim gallery. We ... read more

I woke the girls at 9:30 am and sent them to the dining room to eat the lovely fruit, yogurt and fresh pastries provided by the hotel. We left the hotel by 11 am to begin our explorations of Venice. It rapidly became clear to me that we had different expectations of what we wanted to do in Venice: I wanted to go to museums and churches, and the girls wanted to just explore all the different areas. We decided to split up and meet back at the hotel at 6 pm. So I went to Santa Maria della Salute, the Peggy Guggenheim museum, and the Galleria. The girls explored Piazza San Marco, visited the cathedral, and went to Murano, where they bought gifts for friends and family. After meeting up at the hotel at 6 ... read more

We arrived in Venice at about 5:30 pm via the high-speed train from Rome. After the air-conditioned comfort of the train, we were met with a blast of muggy air as we exited Venice’s Santa Lucia train station. It was so hot! The air was thick with humidity, and the train station was crowded with throngs of people. We waited in a long line to buy our 3-day passes for the “water bus” (vaporetto) and finally boarded the vaporetto about an hour after arriving in Venice. The vaporetto, too, was crowded with both tourists and residents. We lugged our suitcases to the center and watched the beautiful buildings of Venice as we made our way to the Grand Canal. Our stop was San Silvestro, about 25 minutes from the train station. After getting off the vaporetto, ... read more

Wow! We spent many hours at the Vatican today. We started our day by having coffee and juice at the little coffee shop in Piazza Moreno. Then we hopped on bus 64 to the Vatican -- what a quick trip that was! When you walk, it seems like it’s a long way, but it was only a five-minute bus ride. It was already hot by 10:30 am. We walked around the Vatican to the Museum entrance, passing a very long line of people waiting in the bright sunlight to purchase their tickets into the museum. Fortunately, I had purchased tickets in advance and had printed out the notice with the information, so we had absolutely no line at all when we checked into the online ticketing area within the museum. (It definitely is worth the time ... read more

Today we woke up at 8:30 am. Our goal was to be showered and ready by 9:30 am, and amazingly enough, with four of us sharing one bathroom, we were all showered and dressed by 9:30! We went to a little bar just behind the house on via Giulia to have cappucini and cornetti and then began our exploration of the Rome. We started first with the Pantheon. What an amazing structure! The girls put on a headset and listened to a Rick Steves podcast on the Pantheon. The dome for the Pantheon was the model for the Duomo in Florence, St Peter’s Basilica, and even the US Capital building. The oculus, or opening, at the top of the dome allowed in bright sunlight as practically the only lighting in the large temple. Once we had ... read more

We arrived in Rome after a relatively short flight, but it was still a long night! None of us slept more than two hours, and when we got to Rome we waited for our bags for over an hour. When we finally exited customs (after an extremely cursory glance at our passports), we found ourselves in a very dirty, muggy, and noisy airport. I think the sensations of heat and noise hit us harder because we were all so tired. At any rate, we took a taxi into the city, near Porta Pia. Our apartment key was being held by our uncle Mario, and his train from Calabria was scheduled to arrive in about an hour. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at an outdoor cafe while we waited for him to arrive. Once we got the ... read more

We’re at JFK and we’ll be boarding our flight to Rome in a few minutes. We had a great time here in NYC. Last night, we went to dinner at a place called Quality Meats, right off 5th Avenue near Central Park. Liilana said she was in the mood for meat after 3 weeks on a boat with a vegan counsellor. So a friend suggested Quality Meats, and it really was great. It was a steak house, but with great atmosphere, service and really fantastic preparation of all different kinds of meat. And the evening was even more pleasurable because Raja was able to join us for dinner.

It’s been a long day! Chonsa and I did sleep (a little) on the first flight, but we were very lucky with the next flight. It was only about 50% full, so we were each able to stretch out and sleep on a three-seat row. Bliss! After a quick trip in the taxi to our friend’s house in the city, we met up with Liliana. We refreshed our selves by taking showers, then went out to a little bagel place that Liliana discovered yesterday when she was here on her own. It was delicious! The owner was such a friendly guy, too. We ended up talking about where we were from and he said he’d been to Waikiki last year with his family and had loved it. He said he went every day to Leonard’s to ... read more
