We had a wonderful day today. The weather was a bit cooler than it has been -- maybe it was just that there was less humidity, but it was definitely more comfortable. And this evening, the weather was fresh and breezy -- almost like Hawaii weather!
We started the day by walking from our B&B to the Rialto and purchasing gifts for friends and family. I also bought some Venetian Carneval masks for each of the girls -- even though it may be a bit of a pain to carry them back to the US, they are so beautiful and the girls looked great in them. They can hang them on their wall when they get home.
After shopping, we ate lunch at a little spot called the Corner Pub, near the Peggy Guggenheim gallery. We loved it -- delicious little wraps and a fresh salad, plus lots of water. I ate there alone yesterday and really enjoyed it. The staff there were very friendly, the food was terrific, and the prices were exceptionally low.
After lunch, the girls went home to nap, while I searched for some special gifts for Raja's kids in NYC -- I wanted
to get them something a bit special from Venice, since we used their rooms and house while we were in NYC.
Anyway, did you notice that I said the girls went home to nap??? Can you parents imagine how much these teenagers love naps? Try to get them to do it in Hawaii, and there is just no hope. But here, they are exhausted from later nights and lots of walking, and they are very happy to nap.
I got home to the hotel at 3:30 pm (about an hour after the girls), and they were sleeping deeply when I came into the room. They slept until just after 6 pm, then started getting ready for an evening out at Campo St Margherita, the place where all the teenagers gather at night. They are out right now and will return in a little while -- the great thing about Venice is that it is very safe at night. All the walkways are busy with lots of people throughout the night, so after checking it out last night, I allowed them out on their own tonight.
Because we are leaving relatively early in the morning tomorrow for Verona,
I told the girls to have all their bags packed so that all we need to do is roll out of bed, get breakfast, and then head for the train station. Actually, Madi is going to stay in Venice for the rest of the day because Stefania is picking her up. But Chonsa, Liliana and I are heading for Verona, where we’ll meet up with Miguel and Miguel’s mother, Italietta. Italietta celebrates a birthday on July 17, and we are gathering in Verona to go to the outdoor opera with her on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. (The girls are not entirely thrilled about the idea of opera, but I told them it’s good for their character!)
