Ice Cubes. A propos avoiding ice cubes, if you really feel you need them, try taking the advice we were given by CIDA before leaving for Africa: ALWAYS BOIL YOUR ICE CUBES!!!
The girl with the bird phobia is shivering at the thought of bird feet and heads!! ah! It freaks me out just a bit - I did see some photos of someone who has been to Ghana and they had a foot (claw!) on their plate for a meal - I think I will be vegetarian that day!
Keep the great updates coming - so fun to hear about your school and all of the great things you are doing!! Brandy
I really enjoyed reading your entries. I started with the piece on moving to TEDA and could not stop reading. The entries are funny, descriptive and written with so much warmth. Thanks!
Food Contamination? TeeHee. First, realize that we don't get all the news here, so I'm not sure exactly what you are referring to...though I can imagine. Craig and I avoid street meat (sometimes difficult as it can smell sooooo good), but its also a quick trip to nasty things nobody wants. We just found a grocer in Tanggu that sells "pollution free" produce (their equivalent to organic) so this is an exciting find. I would think that most of your stories would have to do with factory produced ready to eat meals. For the most part, we cook from scratch at home, or eat in restaurants. And the restaurants here do it all from scratch. Gong Bao Ji Ding (Kung Pao Chicken) tastes different at each restaurant because they have their own recipes. Our main concern is avoiding ice and washing fresh vegetables in bottled water. The excitement of eating comes when you are served a big bowl of tasty chicken pieces and you pull a chicken foot out! We've yet to be served a chicken head though you can buy them in packages of eight at the grocer.
Thankyou Beth, thanks for these fascinating updates on your live in China. Again, it's sounds like an incredible adventure. Craig, you're a lucky guy to get such an adventurous gal.
We hear so much in the western media about food contamination from China that I must ask how do you guard yourselves against it?

Yea, I'm with Sam on this one - I wish I'd seen the mice too, or a video of them!
Have to give you kudos on the travel blog, it is most interesting. Glad you guys are having so many adventures.
oh no i can't stop laughing! it's just to much to take in all at once. my tummy hurts from laughing. trained mice! it really could be a skit from monty python!
WOW! What an awesome road trip! It was like reading a movie script. Especially the intrigue involved with the smarmy guide, a vehicle breakdown, and of course the possibility of meeting with unfortunate circumstances when you and Craig went off on your own. I loved the tale. Keep these adventure coming. Your photos are absolutely magnificent. RF
Oh guys this sounds like a great week's holiday and I completely understand the comforting feeling coming across familiar Canadian scenery in a foreign land. Now I can't wait to go to Asia again ; ) Brandy

I think you missed your calling!! Hi Beth,
You should be a journalist. When we read your blogs, we travel right along with you and Craig. I'm so glad you are both well and still enjoying yourselves. We miss you, but our "great" loss is their gain.
Love, Laverne
Just like a visit! Dear Beth and Craig:
Have enjoyed all your descriptions of each adventure. They are so real. It's just like being there. I loved the experience of eating moon cakes. A similar thing happened to me in Mexico. A group of teachers had taken us out for a very special treat. I was like you and felt I could stomach anything...until it came to stuffed goat intestines!! I must admit that no matter how hard I swallowed, all I could do was gag!! Foreign cuisine always brings with it a great story!! Can hardly wait to make some new ones!

So great to get your updates and they are so well written! Got to love the adventures of eating out of your element . . . fermented bean ice cream treats anyone? Not so yummy 'treat' we tried in the Philippines - much preferred over their national delicacy, a half developed duck egg. Not exactly to the tastes of the white girl with a bird phobia!
RANDOM!! Cheese Fork!! Hehe, I really miss you guys! That museum sounds amazing!! Did you learn a lot of history there?? I also love the random numchuck footage. Keep it real out there guys!! *PEACE OUT*
Wedding Sounds like a great time. We were at a wedding last weekend too. It wasn't nearly as fun as this one sounds. But we did get an ice cream filled crepe sort of thing covered in strawberry sauce for dessert. Yum!
Awesome You two seem to be having a ball there. Loved the photo of Craig stuffing himself, too much! I love receiving the blog and hope you continue sharing your adventures with us. Maybe I'll have to start one about playing music in Memphis on Beale St. Tell CW I have a house gig at BB Kings on Beale. It's the number 1 spot to play and like the McDonalds commercial says, "I'm lovin' it."
