Apologies, yesterdays blog should have been titled Gunzburg to Augsburg. We were cycling south east all day today. It was easy ride out of Augsburg, some times through parks and lots next to the river. It was through more fields of crop, small villages and forests but only a very little gravel today. About ten miles from Munich we cycled a few miles out of our way to visit Dachau Concentration camp. Dachau is synonymous with the Holocaust, as the site of the notorious Dachau concentration camp where over 43,000 people died during the Nazi regime. The KZ- Gedenkstatte Dachau is now a sombre memorial to those victims and the countless others like them. The entrance gate bears the slogan 'Arbeit Macht Frei' ' work makes you free 'but hard work did not guarantee survival. It ... read more

Breakfast was in the same restaurant that we had dinner in last night. It was a buffet breakfast and a good selection except there no boiled eggs. John and Sue have started to set off very early to avoid cycling in the hottest part of the day so we don't see them at breakfast time. Before setting off we went to Our Lady's church as so many people had said we should. Apparently it was open last night we just just tried the wrong door. It was the side door that was open. Mass was on so we just stayed a few minutes and didn't take photos but everyone was right, it was really ornate and beautiful. It was very Italian looking in design There was an easterly wind all day and as we were heading ... read more

Dinkelsbühl was founded on the wool industry but there are no sign of sheep around now. Tony said that they are all kept indoors as this proves easier and more efficient for the farmer. Poor animals. Breakfast didn't start untill eight o'clock so we set the alarm to go down for then only to find they had started serving at seven thirty so some of the group had already dined. After breakfast we finished packing and went down to the bikes to find everyone else had gone except Bob and Dave. Usually we had been told what time to meet at the garage but as the bikes were all outside no key was needed, so no mass gathering at the garage. Oscar had told us where there was a supermarket so we bought yoghurts and sandwiches ... read more

Down, down down to leave town. The way we had come up, up, up last time. Fortunately, as we were heading south we didn't have to go up again but followed the river Tauber on a flat path through woodlands. There were a couple of small short inclines today but it was relatively flat, mainly through arable land and criss crossing the occasional motorway. The roads we were on were very quiet with very few cars so it was strange when we heard the noise of the motorway traffic. The route took us to a McDonald's late morning as that was the only coffee shop that had been found to be open on a Sunday and the rest of the group always stop for coffee. We joined some of them for coffee, and a snack, as ... read more

We were down for breakfast at 7.30am, as instructed. There was a superb choice, including gluten free. We were off by 9.00am and there was a lot of flat to start with. We passed through towns with amazing buildings and large arable farms. We also saw more storks and a few cows but hardly any other animals. We had yoghurts and nuts sat under a tree, on a bench, in the middle of huge flat fields. There was only one real climb, up through some forests, and true to form the path was rutted, gravelly and steep. Fortunately at this point there were only the two of us so we didn't have to navigate other riders as well. Once at the top we crossed over the water shed of the Rhine and Danube rivers. We arrived ... read more

We were later down to breakfast than the others, but as we were not settling off until Richard had tried the bike shop for shoes at 9.00. we were ready to set off with the others. Breakfast was typically German with ham and cheese and no cereal. Richard couldn't get any shoes at the bike shop in town but swapped pedals with Lyta who had flat pedals that would be easier with his shoes. We were all off soon after nine. There were a few short sharp hills within the first few miles to get over into the next valley. After that it was relatively flat. We were heading south west all day. We had a cafe stop, late morning, for coffee with a few of the group. We then said we were going to a ... read more

Tuesday's blog. We were up a little earlier as we wanted a quicker start to allow plenty of time for the train. Breakfast was in the hotel itself. The hotel was very quirky with lots of religious artefacts around and rather cluttered. It also listed itself as a museum. Breakfast was basic but she surprised me with the gluten free bread. Soon we were off into the sunshine and although we were on the Rhine path the Rhine wasn't particularly visible until very close to Cologne. However, it was pleasant cycling on quiet roads at first and cycle paths later, often on the top of dykes. At one point we saw a huge field of strawberry pickers dashing backwards and forwards with baskets of strawberries. As we got near to Cologne the paths became busier and ... read more

Monday's blog. No internet in the hotel Another hot sunny day and after breakfast we were soon out of Venlo on quiet roads There were a few very gentle inclines but nothing much. We passed through lots of forests and park areas and a flying field for very small aircraft. There were lots more stables with horses and lots of tiny foals. At one stage we passed through the Krickenbecker area on paths with lakes at both sides. Cycling through one small town we spotted a Penny supermarket so stopped to buy some yogurts and sandwiches. As the day went on we arrived in a more urban area and passed through Neuss and round the edge of Monchengladbach. Cycling through Neuss was all on cycle paths on the pavements which was slow going watching out for ... read more

Today was a shorter ride so we had a more leisurely breakfast. There wasn't a great deal of choice at breakfast but the gluten free bread and a boiled egg would keep me going. The first few miles were on the canal again. We stopped to watch a bridge open, and close, for two leisure boats to pass through. We soon left the canal behind for enormous fields of crops, including black currants, carrots and cabbage. There were also huge fields of impressive looking horses and stables. We passed three garden enclosures that had a few fallow deer in them. We have seen this before in Holland and Belgium. I am not sure if they are kept as pets or what? There were even a few dairy cattle scattered around. The first we have seen since ... read more

We started the day with a wonderful breakfast before leaving to be on our way. It was a lovely sunny day for heading south east. It was 15° at 9.00am. Soon after leaving Dortrecht we had to cross the Hollandsch Diep on a very long bridge. It seemed to go on for ever. At first we were on cycle paths through crop growing land and in and out of villages. We passed enormous green houses the size of factories. The last 32 miles were on the Wilhelmina Kannal which passed through lots of different landscapes and places including Tilburg and the top of Eindhoven. Some canals can be incredibly monotonous and feel like being on a treadmill. The path was busy with cyclists and walkers it being a Saturday. At one point we saw a field ... read more
