Geo: 46.821, 6.93625You might or might not know but I have some sort of fascination with planes. So when I heard that there was an air show in Payerne I decided I had to go. It is only about 2hours by train from Geneva. It was a massive event, the Swiss were celebrating the 100 years of the Swiss air force, the 50 years of the 'Patrouille de Suisse' and the 25th year of the formation of the PC-7 team. I went there twice: a Sunday by myself to see the ‘Patrouille de France' and the following Saturday with Steph and Alex (from the lab). It was grant, planes were flying all day long and many were on display on the ground. Well, there is not much to say so I let you have a look ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236I heard from my friend Tom on Monday. He was telling me "Next weekend is the last weekend where I am available before going traveling for 6 months. You should come. Plus we are having a party on the boat." I didn't think twice and booked my flight to London Southend. Believe it or not but when I landed in London the weather was much nicer than in Geneva. Great start to a great week end. Tom had attached his boat near Hackney Wick station, north-east London. He lives on a barge with his girlfriend, Josie. On Friday evening, Tom and I had a quite night, just catching up over a beer and pizzas at a pub and later drinking Gin&Tonic in the barge (while listening to the pub's DJ). Saturday was a beautiful ... read more

Europe » Switzerland August 1st 2014

Geo: 46.2038, 6.13996The 1st of August is a bank holiday in Switzerland, it's their National day. They celebrate the creation of Switzerland, this year it is the 783rd anniversary. And, like a miracle, the sun is out today! I met at 5pm with Beatriz, an exchange PhD student in our department. We first went to the Luminarium. It is an inflatable structure inside of which you can lose yourself. The sun light illuminate each room in blue, red or green depending on the colour of the structure. They play classical music in the background. It was a bit of a weird experience. We spent the rest of the afternoon/night in the park La Grange. Food stand had been installed for the occasion and there are concert all day. Our main to be here is to see ... read more

Geo: 46.2038, 6.13996After weeks of absence, the sun finally came back this afternoon. Oh yeah! Obviously, I had no plan after work, except doing some grocery shopping because tomorrow is a bank holiday so everything will be closed. Once back home I remember I had seen something called Ciné Transat while browsing the internet looking for thing to do in Geneva. As it is an outdoor event I haven't had a chance to go yet. It's a really cool festival. They have an inflatable screen that that put up at the bottom of a park, near the lake. If you want you can rent a deck-chair (5 CHF) or just bring your own chair/cover to sit on. The projection starts at night fall. I arrived there a little before 9pm, with my picnic, a blanket, a ... read more

Geo: 46.2038, 6.13996I went back to Montreux exactly a week after seeing Miyavi. The weather could not have been more different! This time I could see the scenery and enjoy being by the lake. However, this time the main purpose of my visit in Montreux was not really the music but….meeting Andrew. I found him and his two friends at the bar near the stage "Music in the park". The band playing was a quartet from the US army. We listened to them for a little while before walking along the lake. The promenade is very nice. We bought some cans (that we kept fresh by keeping them submerged in the lake), some picnic and sat on some rocks overlooking the lake. We could chat and enjoy a beautiful sunset. Later, we went to see a ... read more

Geo: 46.2038, 6.13996In a completely different register compared to last Friday concert, I went to see Kotaro Fukuma. He is a pianist and tonight he was playing solo. Over the past few years he has won a lot of awards. I am not very familiar with the field but he seems that those were big awards. And I heard some people in the audience talking about him as being a virtuoso. Well, he actually plays extremely well. At some point, I found myself wondering 'How can he plays so many notes at the same time? He only has 10 fingers!'. I really like listening to the piano. Some piece can really tell a story and take you on a journey across mountains and dessert, through happiness and hardship. Tonight, we listened to a contemporary piece, Musica ... read more

Geo: 46.4313, 6.91061 Today at Montreux Jazz festival, it's Japan day. The main star was Hiromi and her Trio project. Hiromi is a great pianist and plays with Anthony Jackson (base) and Simon Phillips (drum). I had already seen them in NYC at the Blue Note Jazz Club. It was really good. I would recommend anyone who has a chance to see them to go! But for me the main star was Miyavi. He was playing at 10pm and when I arrived at 6pm some diehard fans were already seating in front of the door. I took the chance to be at the festival to enjoy other show. The great thing in Montreux is that a lot of concerts are free. So I got to see Akikazu Nakamura Forest. I had just managed to find a ... read more

Geo: 46.2038, 6.13996This week end, the weather was splendid, except for the thunderstorm on Sunday evening. There are a lot of thunderstorms here. I have never seen that many! So I took advantage of the sunshine to enjoy Geneva. I went to the science museum where an outdoor exhibit was organized. The theme was 'What shines…' Most of the stands were for kids but some were also for adults. I went to mini conferences about the life and death of a star, about metallurgy, about the golden ratio in nature, and genome and money. The conferences were set under a tree. It was really nice. My favorite stand was animated by PhD students looking into the interface between two surfaces. The experiment they had on the stand showed how to make a liquid mirror using gold ... read more

Geo: 46.2038, 6.13996I have finally managed to reach Geneva. I was only 2 days and 2 hours later than I planned! All that due to the air traffic controllers being on strike. Well, I made it there with all my stuffs and a sore arm (from carrying my luggage). I was so glad to finally reach my new home.I will be living in a shared flat on the Crêts de Champel. It's a residential area. I little far from the city centre (20min walk) but really close to work (7min walk). I share the flat with 3 other persons (Emilie, her boyfriend Cyril and Richard) and a cat. It should be fun. I can't wait to get to know them better! The first thing to do when moving to a new place: grocery shopping! Apparently, it is ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Geneva June 22nd 2014

I am moving to Geneva. And before the big move I spent a week there at the end of May. It was my first time visiting this city. To my surprise, it is much smaller than I expected. There is only 200 000 people leaving here and it seems very quiet. I don't know what I was expecting but after a year in NYC and having travelled through some of the biggest city in Asia, this city just feel like a town to me. I hope that there is more to do here than it seems. Why going to Geneva? Ok so my first reason to go to Geneva is because I have been offered a job there. And this actually is my main reason. This job is a great opportunity and I will work with ... read more
