Hello and Merry Christmas from the land of Thai!! And what a beautiful place it is - but oh so much more touristy than anywhere in Vietnam! Currently we are staying in Koh Samui, the largest of the group of islands in the South-west of Thailand. Landing at the Koh Samui airport (having said a sad goodbye to Ali at the Saigon airport), we were greeted by the most awesome airport I have ever seen - picture a cluster of 20 or so open air bungalows with a few check in desks and funny little buses that transport you from tarmac to terminal, and thats what it was! That evening we enjoyed our first Thai meal - a welcome change - with another group of physios who had their clinics in Chang Mai - bringing our ... read more

And so here we are - leaving Vietnam after 43 days of exploring an amazing country. Having conquered the North and most of in between, the only thing remaining on the 'to do' list was the Mekong Delta. Departing at 8am, we had a short bus ride to the pier, where we then boarded a ferry type boat to travel along the Mekong out of Saigon to My Tho, a large village/town in the Mekong Delta region. Avoiding buses once again, we decided that the boat was a great option, allowing us to see Saigon from a different perspective, and allowed us to sit around a table to play cards when bored with the scenery! First we travelled through the industrial part of the Mekong, and then gradually the banks became more and more occupied with ... read more

Well, I'm back, and before you read on, I must explain why you are receiving this now, on January the 24th, over a month after I visited all of these places....basically, the following few blogs have been written in dribs and drabs during our stay in Thailand, and if you chose to read the details of my Thailand blogs, you will understand that our stay in Thailand involved a lot of partying...and sleeping....which left little time to sit and concentrate on writing a blog....So here they are now, pick and chose what you read, and if you cant be bothered reading, then there's plenty of photos to tell the stories!! Having packed away our beach stuff, we departed Mui Ne on our first bus, having managed to avoid bus travel until then. After 4 long, hot, ... read more

Where to start? Maybe with the fact that I can barely sit down right now thanks to a sore butt from 7 hours on a bike....! Anyway, I'm writing from Mui Ne, a lovely beach town on the South-eastern coast of Vietnam. It is a 19km stretch of beach with just one road all the way along it - and hundreds of various bungalows and resorts right on the beach. Somehow we managed to score a room for 4 for $10US on our first night - a cheap 2.50 each! Having spent one night in Delat - the strawberry capital of Vietnam (or so it seemed!) we awoke on Thursday morning to board a bus for a short trip to Dihn Linh where our bike ride started. With awesome mountain bikes we began our 80km journey, ... read more

After a fairly hectic few days in Hoi An, we arrived late on Saturday night in hot and humid Nha Trang - taking a lucky chance with a hotel that we thought existed....arriving to find it shut up for the night. Fortunately the hotel next door were more than happy to have us - and as soon as we set eyes on the pool near the foyer, we were staying! In its peak season, Nha Trang is well known for its long and beautiful beach and its beach parties, as well as snorkling and scuba diving. Whilst still very hot at this time of year, the beach was pretty rough, as we had predicted and so it was lucky we had decided to spend only a day there. We had a little time in the morning ... read more

Hello! Well, its taken me a while to get onto this blog - but its been a busy couple of weeks! And that means plenty of photos and stories to tell! Arrived in Hoi An on Wednesday just after lunch - the overnight train trip from Hanoi to Danang went suprisingly quickly despite its length (15 hours!). We were taken to Green Field Hotel - just out of the main part of town - Ange Cath Ali and I all in one bedroom - lucky it was big! It was one of the better hotels so far - with a pool and free cocktails in the evening as well! We had the afternoon to check out the little town - much quieter than Hanoi or any other towns/cities we've visited so far! It was evident how ... read more

What a magical three days! Halong Bay is all that it was made out to be - amazing scenery, awesome seafood and a damn good time! We left Hanoi on Sunday morning and travelled on the bus to Halong City - a group of 16 of us on a bus with very little suspension - not the most comfortable ride! After 3 hours we arrived at Halong City where we had a big seafood lunch before boarding the boat - a three level boat with twin cabins down the bottom, tables/seating in the middle, and then an open deck with deck chairs on top! The first night was to be spent on the boat, anchored in a calm cove somewhere in the middle of the bay. We had a couple of stops in the afternoon - ... read more

For those of you would just cant get enough of storytime, I have a treat for you! Whilst you would think that having spent the amount of time in bed that I have lately (see previous blog), you would think I couldnt possibly have anything more to write home about - but oh so wrong! Those of you who know me well, would also know that I am never short for words, verbally or written! This will be my last post from Hanoi, before we head down south, so read on if you're at all interested! Whilst I lay in bed this past Wednesday, Ange Ali Claire and Cath were treated to a cuisine and a half for lunch, curteousy of some of our clinical supervisors and doctors. On the back of their motorbikes, the girls ... read more

Well, I'm back again, after a fairly long break from the blogs...and from the streets of Hanoi....What do you mean(?) you ask....well, aside from a few trips here and there around Hanoi, I have spent 5 out of the last 7 days lying horizontal in bed. When did it start? I warn you now, this is a rather lengthy story - but you do have the option to skip ahead if I manage to bore you (unlike when you just have to smile and nod when I babble on face to face!). When we were in Sapa we met two lovely ladies/girls...Diana - an awesome hip 67 year old lady, and Anna, a 30 year old travelling Asia alone. Diana, having spent much time in Hanoi, invited us to have dinner with her at a well ... read more

Well, Ange's 21st celebrations involved a rather crazy night! Having taken the afternoon off clinic due to sleep deprivation, and subsequently failing to see Ho Chi Mihn's museum because we arrived 10 minutes after close, we gave in and decided to go to see the Water Puppet show. But we arrived to find that there were no tickets left for the 5.30pm show, so things were going pretty well! So we booked in for the 8pm show, and headed back to the hotel to get money etc for dinner. Easy distracted, we found ourselves at a bar called...the Pub! And it had $15 cocktail jugs so we couldnt pass by! A jug of Pina Colada and another random jug later, Ange and I went back to the hotel whilst Ali Cath and Claire went to the ... read more
