I emerged from the dull yellow tinge of the metro system into an early evening. The sun was snugly settled beyond the horizon but a kaleidoscope of lights danced in the streets. Billboards smiled brightly exhuberating a thrill I had forgotten to expect. I stopped mid foot traffic, eyes wide and searching. Skyscrapers were lit up by screens on all sides, flashing Coca Cola advertisements, current plays, TV shows, and restaurants. Shop windows showcased everything from the finest jewelry and fancy clothes to gift shops and knockoff designer bags. I was in a hurricane of people. Life sized super heros and Disney characters patrolled the street. Mickey Mouse gave a kid a high five while Iron Man posed with a Japanese family of four. Feet shuffled furiously all around me. Each person had somewhere to be ... read more

The sun flooded the sand for miles from right to left. Looking headon at the horizon about a quarter of a mile out, massive waves broke onto the shore, foam swallowing small surfers and bubbling into the sand. A cool headwind pressed against my feet circling through pedals as I went along the bike path that ran parallel to Huntington Beach, California. I was headed north, towards the Huntington Beach Pier which looked like a sliver of an open sore jetting out from the shoreline into the water. There was a calmness that hung on the air and filled my lungs. I breathed in as deep as I could and welcomed the chills it brought up my spine. I would pass by walkers, runners and rollerblader, fellow bicyclers and skateboarders. The sand spread out like a ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Abilene May 24th 2013

If I made a prioritized list of all of the states I wanted to travel to in the U.S., Texas would be at the very bottom of that list. But, on the top of my list of people to see is Juli “Juju” Ragan. Juli and I played Rugby together in Alaska the year before we both left, but long before that we were bosom friends. We had a long history of dressing in full body spandex outfits, singing karaoke, dancing our lives away, and supporting each other through some crazy situations. Here are some things you need to know about this girl: She is an American hero, serving in the Air Force almost four years; she has the best dog, Maude; her car has a mustache; the closest thing she eats to vegetables is drinking ... read more

After the cruise in the Bahamas, Jhene and I headed to Orlando where we were faced with a very difficult decision. We had limited funds and limited time and two life changing opportunities before us: Taylor Swift in concert or the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. With only minor hesitation, we decided on Harry Potter. We were Tennessee bound and T Swizzle would surely be performing around her hometown. Or, even better, maybe I would run into her at Olive Garden with her mom. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Orlando Florida We did it all. As we walked on to platform 9 ¾, the train station whistle welcomed us. We strolled down Diagon Alley and visited Borgin and Burkes and the Apothecary. We went to Hogsmeade where we sent postcards from the Owl Post. We ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Bahamas » Nassau April 7th 2013

With my blogs, I aim to capture out of the ordinary experiences, travel off the beaten path, provide insight to local culture, and highlight alternative perspectives. From a worldly, cultured standpoint, the epitome of a conventional, predictable, and an uninspiring escapade would be to take a cruise. However, I am sure that if you stumbled across a four night cruise to the Bahamas for less than $250 leaving from a nearby port, you couldn’t resist either. Never having been on a cruise, I had some preconceived expectations. I imagined I would spend the entirety of the cruise on the top deck, in a lawn chair with a Miami Vice in my hand (half piña colada half strawberry daiquiri). Occasionally I would dip in the pool to cool off and if that got old, I would read ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Islamorada April 6th 2013

In the middle of April Islamorada in the Florida Keys was experiencing a cold spell—70 degrees. Residents accepted this as a fierce slap in the face from Mother Nature. In January the average temperature is 74 degrees. Miserably accepting the cold as a personal punishment, they sulked through the streets huddled up in jackets and hats as they passed beneath the shade of the palm trees and shivered under the blazing sun at nearby picnic tables. I sat at the end of a full service oceanside cabaña with a frozen Key Lime Colada in my hand watching the boats troll on the streaks of sunlight glistening off the emerald green of the ocean. I couldn’t remember the last time I wore a strapless dress. I felt exposed as the warm breeze swept up the barstool and ... read more

My first week in Islamorada was coming to a close. The sun had set and the dusk was dwindling. The only thing on the agenda was laundry and reading. I was not super excited about that. So, I decided it was time to venture out on my own again, even if just for a day. Sunday night I packed up my little old car and headed to Key West. Key West is the last island in the Florida Keys. To get there I would have to continue driving on the one-lane no passing road for two hours, crossing over dozens of other islands, through a protected deer area and over the seven-mile bridge. I sent out a few Couch Surfing requests. For those who don’t know, Couch Surfing is an online network of people willing to ... read more

My journey has begun, bringing me to an enormous porch that overlooks about 400 acres of Middle Tennessee’s backcountry. Hohenwald to be exact: the name itself is a German word for “high forest.” Anna and I spent the morning swinging in a two-person hammock listening to the wind ignite enormous, aluminum wind chimes and whisper through the wintered branches of the trees. As we find ourselves on the porch yet again, not a single cloud litters the blue sky and the sun seems to reach every crevice of the property. Double doors stand open making the common room of the lodge feel like an expansion of the porch. The lodge has been erected from logs, cedar, and strategically shaped and placed windows. Salt lamps, string lights, drapes of East Asian fabrics, blankets, sitting pillows and yoga ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Kodiak June 2nd 2012

Mountains towered and rolled in a 180-degree panorama. The sun sifted through the small breaks in the clouds, sprinkling the bay with short bursts of light. Waves crept in and out between the rock-creviced shore. Driftwood blended any barrier separating the rocky shore from the damp, greening grass. Our tent settled under leafless trees, scattered with trunks and branches squiggling the grey sky in reach what rays they could grasp. Marya and I sat in two camp chairs. The humble crackling of the coals harmonized with the subtle crashing of the waves close by. Steam from our sweating reindeer sausages rose and filled the fresh clean air. The near by tree swing made of beach-salvaged rope and drift wood still swung from our recent attempts to reach the clouds with our feet. All else was still. ... read more

After a long January of mostly below zero degrees, I figured it was time to get out of the house and put my 0 degree bag to the test. Since I have been up here I have raved about wanting to do a backcournty ski trip longer than just a few miles. Sherry and I had a long weekend and decided it was time to make this happen. We rented us a public use cabin out in the Nancy Lake area, just south of Willow, AK. By the time we made the reservation there was only one cabin available: Red Shirt Lake Cabin #4. Being only 3 miles from the campground, I thought this would be a good little introduction for Sherry to winter backpacking and cross country skiing. We invited a few friends along, but ... read more
