We always try to leave as much flexibility in our travel plans as possible, just in case places are different once seen "in person"...and on this trip, we're glad we did! We made a change in Lisboa already, turning Evora into a day trip rather than an overnight.. We then decided on our last night in Lisboa to scratch the side trip to Salamanca, Spain. It was just too much travel time and was too expensive for a short trip. We also hadn't found a place to stay that we liked in Coimbra, so decided to make that city a day trip from Porto later in the month. Once we made those decisions, it was easy to have the rest of trip fall into place!. We decide to stay longer in the south and then go ... read more

We changed plans yesterday, and decided to make Evora a day trip rather than a place to spend the night later in our trip. So, today we took a bus to the historic city, and spent the afternoon wandering its streets. The area has been inhabited since before 4000 BC, and important city for many cultures: Neolithic, Roman, Muslim, and Portuguese. Three rivers come together near here, and it is thought that is why this area had such importance early on. Romans were here from the second century BC to the fourth century AD. The Moors took over from the eighth to the twelfth century. Évora was reconquered from Arab hands in 1166 by Geraldo Sem Pavor (Gerald the Fearless), and soon afte... read more

"Sintra is a resort town in the foothills of Portugal’s Sintra Mountains, near the capital, Lisbon. A longtime royal sanctuary, its forested terrain is studded with pastel-colored villas and palaces. The Moorish- and Manueline-style Sintra National Palace is distinguished by dramatic twin chimneys and elaborate tilework. The hilltop 19th-century Pena National Palace is known for a whimsical design and sweeping views." We headed out early today (for us...9:00 am!) to Sintra, a 40 minute train ride away, and a UNESCO Heritage Site. The train was crowded, but we were early enough to get seats. The trip is not very interesting: just one giant blob of high rise apartment buildings after another with little green space. A bit of interesting history for all you Norwegians reading this: Sintra was under Islamic rule until July 1109 when url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry, ... read more

We decided we needed a trip outside of Lisboa today, and settled on a visit to the National Palace of Queluz. It was an easy 20 minute trip by train from the Rossio Station, which is a 20 minute walk from our apartment. We used our transit cards, so it's even easier! One of the guide books had inferred that the area around the train station at the palace stop is "sketchy", but it just turned out to be "not white majority" and perfectly safe. I asked a young woman for directions, and she volunteered to walk us the 15 minutes to the palace! She is visiting family here for a year, but is from Cape Verde. Once at the Palace, we paid for our reduced senior rate tickets (still $10/each, but well worth it) and ... read more

With the heat, crowds, and lingering jet lag, we have been occasionally wondering why we left our comfortable life to journey here...and we got answers yesterday! We visited the giant Saturday flea market to begin our day, which included walking (always up and down hills in Lisboa!), a subway trip, and more walking...for some unknown reason the subway stop nearest us was closed, so we walked to the next one, got off near the water (and a cruise ship dock), and went up hill to the market. Flea markets are my favorite stop for souvenirs! We got a gift for our grandson (who requested rocks or fossils), a new tiny animal for our collection, and some beautiful handmade holders for children's napkins (they would carry them to school) for a Euro ($1.20) each!...It was so much ... read more

In trying to be mindful of staying cool in this unusual heat wave, we started our day with a trip via subway to the fantastic Callouste Gulbenkian Museum. Gulbenkian made his money in oil, and amassed a wide ranging art and artifact collection which is now housed in a well-laid out museum in the middle of an exquisite park, complete with ducks, waterfalls, and sun bathing turtles. Seniors get half price at every venue we've been to, so it was a bargain at 5 euros each. We then took the subway back to the waterfront, where Rick Steves let us down for the first time (and not the last time today) by suggesting a streetcar ride to Belem, instead of the train. The street cars were packed, and hot. We visited the Convent of San Geronimo, ... read more

As it was to be very warm again today we decided to go to Cascais, a town about 20 miles from Lisboa, and 40 minute scenic train ride away. We had thought we would avoid the crowds since it was Thursday, but after seeing so many families heading to the beach, we realized that it must be a holiday, and it was! We walked about 15 minutes from our apartment to the Gloria Elevator, which carries people up and down a very steep hill. Since the fare was about $4.00/each, we decided to walk down; a good decision! We then went to the subway, where we bought cards that can have money added to them (it's called "zapping" here) that give you a lower fare on public transportation. We successfully took the correct subways to the ... read more

Well, we didn't get our hoped for sleep last night... At 2:30 am, a young man named Chris came home to the apartment above us and his wife proceeded to yell at him for the next four hours! What we learned from the shouting: They are Americans and about 32 years old, and use the F word frequently. Apparently Chris had contact with an girl from high school (whom his wife has never heard about until last night), and is his "best friend"...she may be in Lisbon; hard to tell from the accusations...We do know that Chris loves his wife (or least that he yelled that about 20 times over the four hours) and that his wife is having none of it. He finally told her to go to bed around 5:00 am and things quieted ... read more

We arrived in Lisboa this afternoon, after a long, 24 hour voyage that started at 7:00 am Monday morning (and we had not slept well, having heard of the Las Vegas shootings just before we went to sleep...) It began with a drive to Kirkland (complete with a blocking accident on I-5), to leave our car with with my son. He drove us to the airport after we dropped my daughter-in-law off at work in Seattle. At 1:45 Seattle time, we took a crowded Norwegian Air flight to London (Gatwick). There were at least 3 screaming toddlers on the flight and they screamed intermittently all night... Everything was a la carte on the flight and we had to request water! It was about 11:00 pm our time once we cleared immigration and began our 3 hour ... read more

We spent Saturday morning with friends from LaConner and the afternoon horseback riding with new friends at their ranch outside of San Miguel. Our LaConner friends are getting ready to sell their lovely home here, but took time to go to breakfast with us. Holly and Erik, the owners of our present home, have a small ranch outside of San Miguel where they have five horses, dogs, chickens and burros. They invited us out for an afternoon of riding and we accepted. I used to ride when I was young, but had a few bad experiences as an adult and wasn't very confident going into this experience. Their horses are all beautiful and well-bred and trained, but not passive. I chose to ride the grandson of Seattle Slew, the famous racehorse! They have him because a ... read more
