We are embarking on our third trip to Japan together. (Bill has been there several times earlier in his life). We will again be visiting my brother Matt and his family, and will meet his wife Dianne and his daughter Madelyn for the first time! For this trip, we are taking the train from the Valley to Vancouver BC, and then flying to Haneda airport in Tokyo. We woke up to a temperature of 38 degrees this morning, and in Tokyo, it's 78! It will be great to have some extra summer....... read more

We took a train along the Connecticut shore to Old Saybrook (former home of Katherine Hepburn and Vin Baker...), where my mom and step-dad met us at the station. A big storm hit on Sunday, luckily after church. The hurricane force winds knocked out power to much of New England, but we were spared...just a lot of branches and leaves down. On Monday, we walked around the historic part of Old Saybrook, where I learned some new history! On Tuesday, we drove to UCONN to have lunch with my niece who is a junior there. On the way, we drove through Willimantic, the site of "the battle of the frogs", and the "Frog Bridge". Willimantic is known as being home of the infamous "Battle of the Frogs" in 1754. To paraphrase the legend: One hot summer ... read more

After a surprisingly restful night in our tiny, but very expensive, JFK hotel room, we took an Uber into Manhattan, and got dropped off at Schwartz Luggage Storage, the only place to leave luggage near Grand Central Station. The business is less than bare bones, and not the cleanest place in the world, but the employee was pleasant, and the prices reasonable... From the storage place, we walked to Times Square, and then down to the entrance of the Highline. As it was a warm sunny Saturday the park was crowded, but still pleasant. There is a huge development going in next the entrance: Hudson Yards is the largest private real estate development in the history of the United States and the largest development in New York City since Rockefeller Center. The site will include more ... read more

Portugal, we loved your people, your food, your history, your beaches, your weather, your public transportation, your reasonable prices, and your beautiful women (Bill's comment). Everyone we met was so nice and helpful...and were patient with my attempts at speaking Portuguese! (Even the woman at the ticket counter in Lagos was polite when she asked me to use English since there was a long line behind me...) While Lisboa was too crowded at times, it was fun to be in a very cosmopolitan European capital again...Sagres was wild beauty...Porto ended up as our favorite..not too crowded, great food, and the wonderful river cruise! On our last day, we visited the market and bought a few gifts, and then took the #500 bus to end of the line in Matosinhos, at the mouth of the Douro. This ... read more

The Douro is the third-longest river in the Iberian Peninsula after the Tagus and Ebro. Its head waters are in Spain. Its total length is 897 kilometres (557 mi) "The Douro runs through one of Europe’s most beautiful stretches of countryside, flanked by vineyards under the warming Portuguese sun. Traditional wineries and charming villages break up the fields of green which typify the Douro region. Before reaching the Atlantic Ocean, the Douro dissects the ancient city of Porto on its final leg. The entire Portuguese nation owes its existence to the Douro, around which the country was founded." On Thursday, we took a seven hour cruise up the Douro River to Ragua, where we had a two hour stay, and then a ninety minute train ride back to Porto. The price included br... read more

On the banks of the river Mondego, Coimbra is famous for its University, the oldest in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe. Among the many archaeological structures dating back to the Roman era, when Coimbra was the settlement of Aeminium, are its well-preserved aqueduct and cryptoporticus. Similarly, buildings from the period when Coimbra was the capital of Portugal (from 1131 to 1255) still remain. During the Late Middle Ages, with its decline as the political centre of the Kingdom of Portugal, Coimbra began to evolve into a m... read more

"The wine producing Douro region is the third oldest protected wine region in the world after the Tokaj-Hegyalja region in Hungary, established in 1730, and Chianti, in 1716. Grapes grown for port are generally characterized by their small, dense fruit which produce concentrated and long-lasting flavours, suitable for long aging. In 1678, a Liverpool wine merchant sent two new representatives to Viana do Castelo, north of Oporto, to learn the wine trade. While on a vacation in the Douro, the two gentlemen visited the Abbot of Lamego, who treated them to a "very agreeable, sweetish and extremely smooth"... read more

"Located along the Douro river estuary in Northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centers, and its historical core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. The western part of its urban area extends to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its combined Celtic-Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to a... read more

On Tuesday, we took a day trip to the very old city of Silves, about an hour from here. We took the local bus into Lagos, and then a train to Silves. It was an 30 minute from the train station to the town, but most of the walk was along a very quiet road. "The peaceful ambiance of the town today does not reflect the historical importance of Silves, which during the North African Moor’s rule of the Algarve (700-1200 ad) was the capital and defensive stronghold of the entire region. Remnants of this illustrious era can be discovered throughout Silves, and include the huge red brick castle, the impregnable city walls and defensive gates." The town, located on a river, was the site of a flourishing Neolithic culture, followed by the Romans, Muslims, and ... read more

Yesterday was the last sunny day for the near future, so we headed for the main beach after brunch. On the way, we checked out the bike rentals in town and decided to rent bikes on Monday. The young man in the bike/surf shop was Scottish, and his father lives in Aberfeldy, where I lived in 1973! There were quite few people on the beach since it was Sunday, but it was very rough due to the effects of Hurricane Ophelia passing by on her way to Ireland! I sat in the edge of the surf, but didn't dare swim... A few surfers attempted to go out without success. The beach is golden sand, with almost no litter and no shells. After the beach, we walked to the port, had a beer in a restaurant overlooking ... read more
