We took a Tur Bus from La Serena to Valparaiso during the day, arriving in the city around 7pmish. Arrived at the hostel, Nueva Mente and rang the bell and waited, waited and waited. No answer and there appeared to be no one around. We were just thinking about our next options when a man appeared, let us into the hostel and told us to wait! A few minutes later, hostel manager arrived and showed us our room :) hostel was quite nice over 2 floors but very very cold as the building was from 1900's and there was no heating! I sat in the hostel with my coat on and actually didn't need my coat for outside as it was warmer. Anyhow, we located the local mini market, a lovely local chap welcoming us 'Chicas' ... read more

South America » Chile » Coquimbo Region » La Serena June 10th 2009

Morning of the 10th June, following breakfast we took our Tur Bus coach from Santiago up the coast to La Serena. Through the bus windows there was still lots of smog and clouds in the air as we drove out of Santiago and finally hit the west coast road and our first view of the Pacific Ocean since landing in South America. As we neared La Serena the view of desert changed to flat farmsteads and the typical looking cactus trees. As we arrived in La Serena the colonial buildings were everywhere and we watched in amusement as a juggler stood at the red lights in front of the waiting cars spinning and juggling until he would quickly jump back onto the pavement as the lights turned green :) As we got off the bus and ... read more

The journey to Santiago from Bariloche, as I know Fuzzy likes to know about these things, was a two buses journey, one from Bariloche across the border, leaving Argentina and entering into Chile to a place called Osorno and then second bus from Osorno to Santiago. The bus journey took us across the Andes with a customs stop out of Argentina and one into Chile. No major incidents or delays involved and the view from the bus window was lovely as we winded around the hills of fir trees and great lakes. Following the beauty of the mountains we arrived in Chile at Osorno which was grey with fog and closed for Sunday! Some Chilean money in our pockets from the ATM we purchased a bus ticket to Santiago but had a long wait till the ... read more

Another day, another bus journey and another blog to write :) After a brilliant day on the Valdes we got a late bus 9.30pm from Peurto Madryn to San Carlos de Barlioche which is the start of the lake district area of the Andes and a beautiful alpine like town with houses like log cabins and a million fir trees :) on the bus managed to sleep most of the way until early morning when I was greeted with a wonderful view as I peered out of my dreamy eyes - sun rising behind backdrop of green firs and mountains dusted with a sprinkling of snow :) The journey was quite windy as it made a pathway through hills and past lakes but wonderful to watch. Arrived at the bus station and not knowing where and ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Puerto Madryn May 31st 2009

Dearest Readers, It gives me great pleasure in announcing that without a doubt for me, Puerto Madryn, the Pennisular Valdes is my favourite place so far in Argentina, and yes that has everything to do with the fact we saw Southern Right Whales both from the shore and in a boat :) Anyhow, where to begin - so when I last wrote we left El Calafate and took a bus (via Rio Gallegos) to arrive in Puerto Madryn. I won´t bore you with long bus tales however a few things to highlight is the cute kid at Rio G who took much amusement from patting mr gently and running away, the conductor of the bus who seemed to like the English chicas and kept checking we were ok, along with a fellow female passenger who kept ... read more

Hi All, Hope you are all ok and not too red from all the sunshine in the UK! Anyhow, when I last wrote I was in El Calafate and updating you on our time in Ushuaia. So, now I need to tell you of the time in El Calafate starting from the fact that Brim and I had to get up at 4am in the morning in Ushuaia so we could head to the bus station for El Calafate. The journey went as follows, leave Ushuaia just before 5am on a bus to Rio Gallegos. Before reaching there however we have to stop at the Argentina border and cross into Chile. This border crossing takes one hour! It appears the computers were slow or just having an off day as the 4 tourists of the bus ... read more

The snowcapped mountains and blue water and minus 2 degrees celcius! That is right people, we have made it from Buenos by plane, a much shorter journey of 3 hours ish to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the WORLD! A slight shock from the warmth of Buenos Aires but Brim and I came prepared with warm clothes and waterproofs :) At the Airport Brim was worried about me and swine flu questions, no coughing, sneezing allowed! Thankfully no questions asked except where were we staying in Ushuaia! The lady did not recognise it but the taxi driver (no buses from Airport in case you thought we were getting lazy) found it with no problem. The hostel, Posada Costa Serena, was more of a B&B than a backpacker hostel but it was warm with fresh towels every ... read more

The last full day in Buenos Aires and I was a bit sad to be leaving but also quite excited about my tango lesson. First off though we had decided to spend the morning in a different part of BA, at the botanical gardens and the Evita museum. In short the Botanical gardens were rubbish and a complete waste of time! There were literally just 2 shrubs with flowers, the rest just green. There was a cacti section that was quite forlorn and where we did see some blooms - they were in a restricted area and we couldn¨t get close enough to see what they were! We did wander into the vegetable patch.....I say vegetable patch but it was a few muddy areas with some half-dead plants and a shrivelled corn plant :( ah well. ... read more

After our long day in Colonia we had an easy morning whilst I chatted away to the hostel guy whilst he kindly burnt all the pictures we had taken so far on our travels onto CD. Having told us the location of the nearest post office we managed to package up our CDs and some other bits and send them Argentine post with bar code label!:) hopefully the CDs make it so we can free up some space on our SD cards for more picture taking :) Next task was to head into town and book some tickets for a Tango show. The hostel had already telephoned around and confirmed I could take a Tango lesson at a place called Cafe Tortoni with no reservations required! However, purchasing the Tango tickets was far more time consuming ... read more

Carmen - please note another country requiring a pin on the map please :) We took the fast boat (one of two options) of 1 hour to cross from Buenos Aires to Colonia Del Sacramento, Uruguay. Main reason for my enthusiasm was it was another country and also featured in Mr Brimelow¨s 1001 places to visit guide! The customs process of, out of Arentina and into Uruguay took place on the Argentine side. It was not too bad but did involve further stamps on various pages of my passport - getting a bit concerned I am going to run out of pages for them to stamp! Anyway, boat journey uneventuful with not much to see but dirty water we arrived in Colonia. The tourist information at the harbour closed we wandered into town in the general ... read more
