Dear Blog Readers who must wait, Blame no connection or blame the writer, but I have missed a few days. From Freeport, MI Where we weathered our 2nd BIG storm...torrents of rain, wind, and curl up with a good book weather (no fireplace). Next day...bright and sunny! Our weather has really been incredibly delightful for autumn in New England. Found a cute sounding place in New Hampshire, Henniker so we stayed there, walked to church and tried to use our cell phone. The big event that night was a preHalloween Scary Hay ride. Members of a snowmobile club get together, camp, [View Full Entry]

Hello from New Brunswick, Canada, There are many more leaves here than people. We had a grand time at Fundy Natl. Park. We visited the Hopewell Rocks yesterday at high tide. The sandy beach and rocks get completely covered when the tide comes in the Bay of Fundy. It can vary by 42' if conditions are right. We were one of four RVs in the campground which was on a lovely pond. I was sure that we would see a moose at dusk or dawn...nope. We spent most of the day in the park where there are many hiking trails. We [View Full Entry]

Stranded at Low Tide

Hello from Canada, We said a fond farewell to Bar Harbor & Acadia, but made a spontaneous stop at a local birdhouse artist. We could have purchased any house we wanted on the honor system. But, Bob the artist and a native of the area, wanted to talk. He could tell a story about each and every birdhouse, where the materials had been salvaged from, and his mother's collections. He was a single parent and had to make a living on Mt. Desert Island and care for his son. He restores antique furniture and builds very unique birdhouses. Guess what we [View Full Entry]

A Field of Color

Dear Mainlanders, Tonight is our last night at Bar Harbor, Mt. Desert Island, Maine. We are so glad we spent a whole week here. Not only has it been relaxing for us, but there is so much to do. After yesterday's stormy, wet weather we woke up to sun. We hiked around on the carriage roads in Acadia and thanked J.D. Rockafeller for coming up with the idea. The leaves keep getting more and more beautiful...even poison ivy turns red. Drove into Bar Harbor to shop, get lunch on the wharf (clam chowdah for me, but Dave was needing a hamburger [View Full Entry]

Dear Pacific Dwellers (and others), Yesterday on a whim we decided to go out to the islands just off the coast. We took the local mail boat which runs from Northeast Harbor to the Cranberry Islands. This boat has been doing this route for the last 50 yrs. During the summer it makes 6 runs daily, autumn=5, then winter =3. It took us to Islesford (Little Cranberry) along with mail, supplies, locals returning from appointments on the mainland, workmen, and 6 tourists who just wanted a glimpse of island life. High school kids also have to use this sea-worthy school bus [View Full Entry]

Dear Interested Parties, I haven't described some of the hikes we have taken. We actually hiked a distance on the Apalachian Trail in New Hampshire which went through the White Mts. nice trail and dogs ok on a leash. Today we did a couple of hikes in Acadia Nat'l Park, one with a ranger. We hiked to Otter Cove, but alas, no sea otters. They do have river otters here in the streams. We went on a Raptor Watch on top of Cadilac Mt. and saw some hawks & golden eagles in the distance. The view from the top is sensational; [View Full Entry]

Dear Family & Friends Coast to Coast, A leg of our journey has been completed. We have arrived at Bar Harbor, ME next to Acadia Nat'l Park. But, we must say that the journey getting here was one of the most beautiful ever taken. From New York, through Vermont, New Hampshire has been a sight these eyes have never seen. I know I've already written about the leaves, but I wish I had more adjectives to adequately describe them: awesome, spectacular, like fireworks in the forest. New Hampshire was enchanting and Mt. Washington was a blaze of color. We moved into Gorham [View Full Entry]

Dear Friends & Family to the west of us (that's a lot of territory!), although we are now in the beautiful White Mts. of New Hampshire, I must take you all back a few days...been busy, no wi-fi, no electricity, and looking at new vistas . From Niagara (not Viagra) Falls we drove on the NY Thruway 90 (our 1st toll road) to arrive in Syracuse, NY in time for Donna Cappellano's crosscountry meet. First we took a lovely hike on a tow path at Weedport. Try to imagine the commerce of the time needing canals to transport goods to factories [View Full Entry]

Dear Road Warrior Want-to-be, Another 3 state day thanks to our founding fathers' sons & grandsons, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York are all very close if you stay up north. So. for the 2nd time it was breakfast in Medina Ohio, coffee in Penn, lunch at Dunkirk Lighthouse in NY, and dinner at Niagara Falls. I realized that it could have been dinner in Canada as we are that close to the boarder. We are very used to tall lighthouses on the west coast and even those we've seen on the Atlantic, but a lighthouse on Lake Erie is not very [View Full Entry]

Dear Blog Watchers, Today is the 1st day of October and our 1st rainy day. It started last night at Elkhart, IN, but then stopped. We had an oil change before starting east again. We have alternated on 2 roads: 6 and 20. They both meet our needs for scenic landscape, small rural towns, tree lined houses, etc. The speed limit is 55 which seems comfortable, although it drops down to 45 then 35 as we enter the rows of brick, 2 story shuttered homes with huge green lawns and no fences. It was Monday...wash day for the many Amish houses [View Full Entry]
