"The Old Man and the Sea
Dear Faithful Followers of the Foliage Blog, Today I will not be talking about fall foliage. We have shifted gears (sails?) and have fallen in love with Mystic Seaport. The aquarium is nice; it was fun watching 3 Beluga whales at feeding time and California sea lions showing off how intelligent they are, but when you compare it to our own Monterey Aquarium...it's not a "fluke" that we're #1. But, the historical Mystic Seaport is a true treasure of an era so important in our country's development. It's much larger than I thought it would be and the grounds are lovely and not commerical. It is an authentic village which was an important link to sustain a sea-going way of life. It is not to be missed. We spent the whole day there and still could go back for more. Tomorrow, however, we think we'll go into today's Mystic and see what is there. As far as tall ships, Mystic Seaport is home to 4 National Historic Landmark vessels, including the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaleship in the world. You can tour all of them, but only Jeff who has just gotten off a large sailboat can appreciate how small they are in a big ocean. We went into the pharmacy and saw what "reputable" pharmacist had to put into the ship's medicine chest so the captain could treat illnesses & accidents that would occur. Jeff had a fellow crew member who indeed had a medical emergency. Antibiotics they had aboard weren't working so he had to be taken off by a rescue boat from Australia...in 8-12 foot seas. After 5 days in the hospital he is ok, but we did think about it today. Did you know that a tall ship needs 2 miles of rope? We even saw the rope making building. I could keep on, and on, and...Tomorrow Lon has his shoulder surgery in S.F. so Rebecca and Nicholas are there with him; Emily and Seamus are at Rebecca's house helping Lexie & Gabe keep up their routine. Lon's mom Sonia is helping, too. Jennifer is going up to help when Lon is released from the hospital on Thurs. It's great to see families helping each other out. We all hope for a speedy recovery. We wish we could be closer, too. Sox Mania has even leaked into Connecticut. Merrily we sail along,DWT
P.S. We didn't mean to short change RI, but we were through it before we knew it.
