First off, I apologize for somewhat slacking in the blog updates the last week I was in Ecuador. I had finals and papers due for the classes I was taking. I had an awesome experience in Ecuador. I was able to see one of the most diverse countries on the planet while getting an education. I had the opportunity to stand on the equator and watch the experiments that were done there. I am now home in Louisville, Mississippi but I leave tomorrow to go work at Camp Ozark in Mt. Ida Ar. for 10 days. Thanks to everyone who followed the blog. I would be more than happy to talk to any of you in more detail about my trip! Austin... read more

This weekend I am going to Otavalo which is a market town and I am going to see the Equator museum. I have just over a week left in Ecuador and it has been amazing. The trip started early Friday morning. I woke up about 6 a.m. and headed to the Quito National Airport. From there we flew to Cocoa. We then rode a bus for 20 minutes and got on a motorized canoe. It was a big canoe where we sat on plastic lawn chairs as we traveled down the Napo river. We then went through an Oil Company clearance and got on an outdoor bus for another 2 hours. After that we got on another canoe for 2 and a half hours and went down the Tiputini River. I was very surprised to see how nice the Biodiversity station was. We had awesome food and stayed in nice cabins. Charles, Hunter, and Walt were all in my cabin. After we settled in, we had dinner. Dinner Friday night was ... read more

Universidad San Fransisco is located in Cumbaya, Ecuador. Cumbaya is about 40 miles south of the capital city, Quito. It was the first Liberal Arts college in the country and is among the top 10 best Universitys in the country. I am studying People and Policy of the Andes as well as Ecology and Policy of Ecuador. My teachers are amazing. The school is also a culinary institute so the food is awesome. I wanted to make this post so I could put up a few more pictures of the University... read more

The field trip went really well yesterday. we took a bus up to about 10,000 feet and hiked the rest. The guy who is in charge of fish research was unable to make it but I was still able to see the rivers and talk to someone who lived nearby about the invasion of trout to the inland streams. We hiked up to the top of the Andes to about 12000 feet. We were able to study all types of flowers and trees and even made a tea with one of the flowers. On the ride out there I realized my camera was dead so I didnt take any pictures but I am going to get some of other people that were with me. Our ecology teacher said we are going to take another field trip to ... read more

First, I think some of the other blog post were closed for some reason but they should be open and able to be read now Friday we finished class about 12 and were on a bus to Banos by 12:30. It was not the most luxureous way to travel but we made it there for only 3 dollars! It was interesting, everytime we stopped at a light or something venders would come on the bus trying to sell the most terrible food. We made it to Banos at about 6 Friday. We were actually able to get a nice hotel, which I have pictures of. Friday night we ate dinner at an Italian place that was pretty good. At 9 we went on a party bus to the top of a moutain where we could see ... read more

I just finished eating dinner. I had breakfast for dinner tonight. It was pretty good but didnt come close to the grilled chicken and potato wedges I had for dinner. I am going over to Hunter's family's house tonight to hang out because he has his own den and stuff. Mom told me that it may be interesting to everyone to mention the KFC and McDonalds, as well as anything made in America does not change its name. Nike is super expensive here. They have this brand here called Litto which is an outdoor brand like Patagonia and they have really cool jackets and pants so I may have to buy some of that. I dont think fishing is going to work out this weekend, it was too hard to find a place. We are ... read more

A week ago today I left Atlanta and made my way down here. It is awesome to see how much I have learned in just one week. I had class today for 5 hours so that tomorrow we can only have 3 and get to Banos early. We are still unsure of what we're going to do in Banos but I know we are going to go biking, rent doon buggies, and possibly go horseback riding. The rapids are not safe because the water is contaminated and If you are use to it, it may make you sick. Anyway, I am really enjoying my class. I have 2 presentations and an essay due in one class. I am doing one of my presentations on the fish of Ecuador and my other paper and presentation on Ecuador's ... read more

Yesterday we had oriention for the school and then after we went to mariscal and ate. We ate and this place called tapos y vinos and it was all you can eat. tapas is basically appetizers but they bring out like 10 different things and you share with the group. That was alot of fun Today we did not have our 10 o clock class so I slept late and played on the computer until lunch. For lunch I went to the mall and ate KFC which was not a good decision. After lunch I got on the 45 minute, winding roads, bumpy bus ride. As soon as I got off, KFC came back to visit. I feel fine now though. My class on the ecology of Ecuador is going to be amazing.
