As I read over my blogs I noticed that I missed mentioning that we had Gelato’s in almost every city. Yum. Pistachio seems to be the most popular flavor as it was gone most of the time. The coffee was superb. When we were in Rome we would go out early in the morning to find a coffee shop and sit outside and watch things start up in the city. When traveling with a large group remember to allow twice as long for everything you do. Getting seated in restaurants was not a problem but that was probably due to the downturn in tourism. We were a group of four couples who worked very well together and enjoyed similar things, which made it fun to have all of us together. We left Tuscany on July 4th ... read more

We saved the big day for last, Florence (Firenze). We had three goals when we reached Florence, the David, Uffizi museum and shopping. The day before we had booked times and tickets to see the David and the Uffizi museum. By booking a time we were able to line jump. It cost a little extra but when you see the line that stretches around the block in the heat it’s worth it. The David, at the Accademia, was our first stop. Without a good map this place would be easy to miss. Unlike many of the other sites we have visited the Accademia was non-descript and looked like a regular building on the street. Once inside we toured until we came across Michel Angelo’s David. All I can say is pictures do not do it justice. ... read more

We had scheduled with Niccoletta, the owner of Stomennano, to give us a tour of the property in the morning. She spent about two hours describing the history of each room and walked us around the property. Amazing their history that dates back to the Etruscan days. Stomennano started out as a small church, the current building was added to the original church structure. Queen Margherita occasionally stayed at the property when traveling. Additionally Dante’s Divine Comedy references Monterrigioni from the view of Stomennano. Lots of history. I haven’t mentioned our hosts. Niccoletta, our hostess and her husband NiccoIo and their daughter Luisa, they were wonderful to work and interact with. And I can’t forget Mia, the watch dog, and Osavidio, the puppy. After the tour everyone headed off to see San Gimignano, Vikki and I ... read more

Fifteen minutes south of Stomennano is the town of Siena. Siena is the home of the Palio , which lucky for us was taking place the same week we were in Tuscany. We all loaded up and went to Siena. The place was packed, it took us 45 minutes to find a parking space and I’ll tell you the parking was tight, especially with a nine person van! We parked at the Soccer Stadium thinking it was away from the crowds but I think everyone else had the same idea. As we drove around we had inches to spare, I had my head out one window and Bob’s was hanging out the other window as we squeezed through the lot! After finally parking we headed into to the Piazza del Campo where the race took place. ... read more

During our down day we conferred with Nicolleta, our hostess, on some places she might recommend we visit on the west coast. Her recommendation was a little town on the coast called Populonia. Trying to go to either the north coast or south coast would have meant all day in the car. As it was we spent all day in the car anyway. Populonia is an old Etrusian city that pre-dates the Roman times. It was this great old castle style lookout with a small town nearby. Unfortunately it was hazy enough that we couldn’t see the island of Elba, but the views from the top of the lookout were amazing. The climb to the top was interesting as you can see in the photos. We hiked and shopped the area for a couple hours and ... read more

Day One in Tuscany We all decided that it would be nice to have a down day and hang out at the villa and chill by the pool. We did a little grocery shopping in the morning, cooked some lunch and we ready to head to the pool when the sky opened up and began dumping buckets of rain on us. No real exaggeration here it was raining so hard that it began flooding into the villa. Martin and Shelly had a room on the top floor that was a watery mess from the storm. They ended up moving to an apartment elsewhere on the Stommenano property. This storm continued from about 1p until 5pm. It didn’t matter that we missed the pool time we all had a great time hanging out in the Villa. ... read more

Today we woke up at a reasonable time and felt pretty good about getting a decent night’s sleep. We took the water taxi to the train station and boarded our train to Florence. Our final destination being a little villa outside of Monteriggioni called Stomennano . Up until now our train rides have been uneventful and timely, not today. We should have expected problems when we couldn’t find our car or seats, they had changed equipment. Once we got reassigned and on our way it got a little stuffy in the car; oh the air conditioner is broken. The attendants on the train tried propping the doors open between cars which gave a little relief. Finally they offered to reassign us to a car with air conditioning but we were over half way through the trip ... read more

After an evening in the Venice maze everyone was pretty worn out. A combination of the late night jaunt through town and residual jet lag made for a late start on Saturday. A promise of breakfast in the morning was ‘..let’s meet at 1pm..’ when we all finally got up at noon. We hopped on a water taxi into town with the goal of lunch and wandering the streets to San Marco Square, to get a chance to see what it looks like in the daylight. Our first stop was lunch at a little place on the water (of course). I can’t find the name of it but it’s right next to the public transportation Zattere terminal. A few bottles of wine and some pizza we were good for a day of shopping and touring. We ... read more

Leaving Rome On the way out of Rome we decided to leave early for the train station so that we could check out the Museo Romano (Roman Museum) about a block from the terminal. It was a disappointment, most of the collection was of pieces of columns and other stone fragments. The historic collection at the Vatican is hard to beat. By the way the cab ride to the Terminal was 10 euros. Riding to Venice We hopped on the train to Venice and settled in for our 4 hour tour. We spent the time enjoying the country side and some wine. We arrived in Venice well lubricated and ready for our water taxi ride to our hotel. This puts us with almost every form of transportation to get around on this trip; planes, trains, busses ... read more

The Vatican We arranged for a private tour of the Vatican at 9am. We met at a little restaurant on the east side of the Vatican called Paolo Di Paolini Giampaolo. Lesson number two to be learned here. We arrived early and decided to have a little breakfast. The waiter was nice and offered omelets and coffee and juice, sure why not. While we waited for the omelets he brought some fresh croissants and bread to snack on. The breakfast bill was 69 euros! Lesson learned ask for a menu for Breakfast or Lunch. This sounds counter intuitive from what we had been told to always try the specials at restaurants and that many don’t have menus, which is what we assumed for this little Trattoria. If it was any consolation the food was good. The ... read more
