It was Jan. 7th as we walked down a dusty hill in Chiang Khong, Thailand, to the side of the famous Mekong River, to climb into a small boat and cross the river to the Laos side of the border. The water was surprisingly dark and murky, and we wondered how deep it really was, trying not to fall in with our packs strapped to our backs. We carefully climbed into the tipsy little river boat and in five short minutes, we were there at the Laos border crossing. We got our visas stamped, then hopped in the back of a bench-seated pick-up and were slowly driven, weaving along the dirt road to avoid all the chickens. There it was, the 'Slowboat', where we would spend most of the next two days cruising along the Mekong, ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai January 22nd 2008

Morning rolled around on Jan. 2nd, and we headed off to the bus station to hopefully meet up with our new friends and head north to Chiang Mai. It was very easy and straight forward, that is, until we found out the brutal news that every single bus to Chiang Mai was already full. Again, 'Happy New Year' was to blame, as it was the day after New Years and everyone was returning home after their holidays. The only possibility of getting to Chiang Mai that day was if we were to buy a ticket, get on the bus, and stand in the aisle for the whole six hour ride! It sounded pretty bad, but it was also better than staying in Sukhothai for another evening, since the buses were likely to be full the next ... read more

To get to the temple filled city of Ayuthaya, we decided to enjoy our first Thailand train experience. After picking up our passports the evening before, we headed off on Dec. 29th to make our way north. Getting to the Hualamphong train station and buying our tickets was fairly easy, first the bus, then the sky train, and then the subway with our bulging backpacks. Luckily, it was earlier in the day on a Saturday, so there were fewer people about. Our plan was to get on one of the nicer trains, since it was our first time on a train trip in Thailand, then kick back and relax. We had a quick coffee, then bought our tickets. Not long after, we realized that we had purchased a third class train ticket. Imagining that this was ... read more

Remember the old eighties song, it went something like 'One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble...one night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble'. Well, we were about to find out if there was any truth to the lyrics. December 18th, and there we were in Bangkok! After a mini flight of 2.5 hours, and a couple of evil women at the Thailand customs who gave us a hard time, we arrived in the so called seedy and intense city of Bangkok, Thailand. We hopped on an airport bus which took us to the well known backpacker zone of Banglamphu. Most of the cheaper hotels in the area are centered around the infamous backpacker filled ghetto of Khao San Road. It's the kind of place you either love or hate. You would swear that ... read more

We boarded the bus on Dec. 12th and headed off from Melaka to Singapore, the famed island nation and city-state. It was a 5 and a half hour ride, which included crossing the borders. At first we were a bit intimidated about going there, since there are many punishable offences, some that one can get caned for. For example, it is illegal to chew gum, or take photos at the border crossings. But surprisingly, crossing the border went pretty smoothly. We got off the bus, got stamped out of Malaysia, got on the bus, got off the bus, got stamped into Singapore, got on the bus, then drove off to the Singapore bus station. It felt a bit like a choreographed dance routine, but we had it a lot better than another couple we saw. First ... read more

It's Dec. the 5th, the plane lands and what do you know, we're in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. We didn't really know what to expect, except what we had read, and heard from some friends. First we jumped on the 'KLIA Ekspres', a super efficient express train that whizzes you along the 50 km distance from the airport to the city in about half an hour. We got off at the KL Sentral station, then hopped into a rickety old taxi cab for a quick ride into the heart of Chinatown. 'No problem, piece of cake', we thought as we got dropped off at the hotel of our choice. It was close to midnight and there was a large gate drawn across the entrance, so we were thinking, 'Is this place actually open or ... read more

As we boarded the 'Spirit of Tasmania' night ferry on Nov. 21st, all sorts of thoughts were crossing our minds. 'Would we have a rough crossing?' and 'Would we throw up?' were the main concerns. Ten hours on the ferry would soon tell. Bass Strait is notoriously rough, and we had been warned by several previously ill travellers. For our crossing we made sure to get a cabin for the night, so that if we were to get sea sick, we could at least do it in private. We stood out on the deck as the ship set sail; all along the shore there were families come to wave off their loved ones, so we waved too. As we headed out to sea, we were treated with an incredibly beautiful sunset. We enjoyed dinner and drinks, ... read more

We arrived in Hobart, Tasmania after a very quick 1.5 hour long flight from Sydney. Our main reason for choosing Tasmania to visit was that our friends Tim and Jacqueline are both currently enrolled at the university there. Again, we were spoiled enough to have our friend Tim pick us up at the airport, accompanied by his gal Jacq's brother Mike, who was also visiting from Canada. We received good old bear hugs from Tim, met Mike, then made our way to his mode of transportation, 'The Pooge'. If you're wondering what a pooge is, it happens to be Tim's lovely carbon monoxide blowin, left leanin beauty of a car, a 1982 Peugeot. He had warned us before, but we learned that he really wasn't kidding when he told us that one had to drive with ... read more

After taking such a long plane ride on the previous jaunt, we were happy to be on a short 4.5 hour flight to the big city of Sydney, Australia. Luckily for us our lovely friend Jen had kindly offered to pick us up at the airport. Pretty sweet, considering that getting away from the Sydney airport is expensive, confusing, and much like escaping a maze. Actually it's not really that terrible, especially because we didn't have to do it. As we walked down the exit ramp, we were greeted by the happy sight of a tall girl excitedly bouncing about. For those of you who don't know, Jen has called Australia home for the last ten years, which is also about the same length of time that we've been promising to come and visit. We drove ... read more

After much delaying and postponing, we've finally sat down seven weeks into our trip to begin our travel blog. Well, I guess better late than never... So on October the 19th we were driving through New Westminster on our way to the airport (running a bit late as usual) when a news flash on the radio informed us that a plane had crashed into an apartment building in Richmond! Much panicking ensued, as we both assumed that there was no way in hell that we would be flying anywhere that evening. Not only that, but it's hard to want to fly immediately after hearing of a crash. Images of road and airport closures flashed through our minds, but to our surprise everything remained open. It was very kind of the airport staff to run continuous footage ... read more
