Today we had a tour around the old Jewish area of Prague. We saw 5 beautiful synagogues and a large Jewish cemetery. One of the synagogues really got to me. As you entered, every wall was covered in names of all of the Jewish people, about 80,000, from Prague that were killed. As I kept entering rooms I expected the names to finally run out but it never did. There were in all but one room. This other room is the room that upset me the most. The room was full of pictures that the young Jewish children drew while they were in the ghetto. They were picture that ranged from what they missed from home, what life was like back then and in the ghetto, and what they thought life would be like once they ... read more

Prague here I come! The 5 hour train ride was one of the prettiest things I have ever seen. It reminded me of a mix between southern Idaho and Hood Canal, but 100x prettier. On the train, we met another group from the states (they were from North Carolina). I did not get the homework done that I would have liked to because I spent most of my time looking out the window. Hopefully I will find some time soon. Upon arrival, I have discovered that Prague is the prettiest place I have ever seen. I do not wish to ever leave. Ever. Walking around the center near our hotel we discovered the beauty and witnessed a proposal, so romantic. Dinner was traditional Czech food. I had beef goulash with dumplings which was really good. We ... read more

Today was a day dedicated to just relaxing and nothing thinking about anything sad. A group of us spent a good four hours or so walking around the Berlin Zoo. It was amazing. The animals were so cute, especially the one month old baby elephant! We even heard the two sets of lions have a roaring frenzy, twice! It was a really cool expereince. It was a great way to spend the last day in Berlin for a while. Tonight a group of four of us girls went out to a fun little restaurant/bar and had a drink and enjoyed the last night in Berlin. Overall, a very relaxing day.... read more

I can tell that the trip is starting to get to me; last night I had a dream about being at a funeral. I don’t like thinking about death any more than this trip requires. But we woke up to snow so that made me happier. We started off the day by heading to a neighborhood on a street renamed Einbahnstrasse, which consisted of mostly Jewish families before the war and before they were all deported. The people that now live in the neighborhood have decided to buy these things called stumbling stones, which are metal plaques that are placed on the sidewalk in front of the house that the Jewish family lived in in remembrance of each person. It was thought-provoking to try and think about what life was like back when they lived in ... read more

Going to the Resistance Museum was an interesting experience. With almost everything in German, I had a hard time understanding/relating to the given information. Although I couldn’t understand very much, there were a few things that surprised me and that I found interesting. One of the first things that was shocking was how many groups I saw that had tried to form together to put a stop to things. Due to not hearing about many of the resistors, I just assumed that almost everyone that participated did it individually; I have learned about many individuals that had helped victims. It was interesting to learn about the groups, big and small, and what they did to try to get the destruction to end. It was also interesting to learn that some of the people that I had ... read more

Today started off as a very emotional day and continued to be one. I woke up from a dream where I was crying in the dream and I am pretty sure that I was crying while I was sleeping. It was very upsetting and I just couldn’t shake the feeling. We visited our first camp today: Sachsenhausen. It was a sad experience but not as sad as I had imagined. Our group ended up joining up with a walking tour and had a tour by an older man named Nigel. He was a Scotsman that enjoyed making fun of the Americans and was able to keep the experience from being extremely depressing, although he told us some things that were very depressing. To get to the entry gate, we walked down a path that many victims ... read more

So today was another day that rung close to home. On the way to the memorial and museum, we stopped and saw part of the Berlin Wall and part of where it once was. It was interesting to see the setting of where it was and how there are now buildings that stand in the middle of the walls path. There were a couple of things that surprised me when we saw it. The first thing was how small it was. In my mind it was taller, not the size of an average wall. The other thing that surprised me was all of the defacing that was done to the wall, especially all of the gum that was stuck to it. To me, it seemed disrespectful. Once again, I was surprised when I saw the memorial ... read more

So we went to the Jewish Museum and Memorial today and i had my first real reaction to something we have seen. Here is my blog for the museum: Visiting the Jewish Museum and Memorial is definitely something that I will never forget. I learned a lot and felt an uncanny closeness with the victims of the Holocaust. Walking in, I expected the experience to be a lot like the experience I had in Washington D.C. Holocaust Museum but it was nothing close. When I look back on the Holocaust Museum I remember the videos and photographs but when I look back on the Jewish Museum and Memorial I will remember the feelings and connections I felt. Learning about the architecture of the building made me appreciate the museum and memorial even more. When we first ... read more

So it has been a pretty fun birthday! We started the day off exploring a flea market. There were a lot of fun little knick-knacks but I don't plan on buying anything until it is time to go home. We then walked through the Tiergarten and saw a lot of pretty nature; it reminded me of home. I am hoping that it will snow when we return though and I can go back and that it will be even better. Coming out of the garden we ran into the Berlin's Victory Column. Today was a day filled with jumping on buses and seeing where they took us so I saw a lot of random stuff until we came to the Brandenburg Gate and had a blast taking pictures with two guys dressed up there. You could ... read more

Today was the first day visiting something related to the Holocaust. We went to the Wannsee House where the Wannsee Conference was held (where they planned out the execution of all of the victims). It was very informative and gave a lot of insight into how the upper officials thought throughout the war. It wasn’t very upsetting or anything, just informative, which was nice. It was also my first time on the U-Bahn which was cool. I must say that Berlin is a very pretty city and the area that we were in has some of the biggest houses I have seen. They were very cool. After coming back, it was exploring some more and crepes for dinner. We will see what the birthday brings tomorrow. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ So, an impromptu night explore lead to three hours ... read more
