Happy New Year to everyone back at home and thanks for all the christmas cards and presents we have received. We have had a lovely new years day, soaking up the sun on the beach and around the pool. Last night we went in to Cairns for the fireworks over the esplanade, finishing up at home with a pizza watching some more over the harbour bridge on the telly. 2007 was a good year for travels, looks like back to reality in 2008! We are looking forward to all of our visitors, here are some photos to tempt those not already booked in!... read more

A quick xmas update from the comfort of our room in the Sofitel. We have been in Broadbeach for a couple of days now and have enjoyed the luxury lifestyle. The cocktails have gone down well in the evenings and we are stuffed full of good food. The Sofitel is not very Christmassy. No tree, decorations or festive music. They even ran out of turkey at Christmas dinner! However we have had a great time and have eaten and drunk plenty, making the most of the all you can eat/drink Christmas buffet, Aussie Christmas fare consisting of Seafood (Lobster, Oysters, Prawns, Mussles, Squid, Crab and Moreton Bay Bugs), tradtional roast (beef, pork, ham, fish, chicken, no turkey) and numerous desserts (inluding a gingerbread house with no rats). There were however crackers on the tables (the Aussies ... read more

We took a detour on the sunshine motorway, hoping for a more exciting trip south, though it was much the same as the trip north. We arrived in Surfers for lunch and the Sunday session at Hard Rock Café, somewhere that has become a holiday tradition. We are staying at Budds Beach Apartments, just far enough from the centre to avoid the rowdiness, although within easy walking distance of the bungy jump park! Not a lot happens in Surfers during the day. The main attraction of the area is the theme parks. We purchased the three park pass to Movie World, Sea World and Wet n Wild. All were pretty good although movie world wins out as a result of the Superman Escape rollercoaster and the lack of queues. 0 to 100 km/hr in 2 seconds ... read more

It was not a fun filled drive to Noosa from Brisbane, apart from the giant pineapple the one and a half hour drive was pretty dull. But we arrived in time for lunch at Noosa Junction and stocked up on some food and drink for our self contained unit at Coles prior to checking in. We are staying at the Noosa Parade Holiday Inn, but not the Holiday Inn that you will all be thinking of! Saying that though it is rather nice, spotlessly clean and comfortable. Blew the budget on lunch, so had a lazy rest of the day, took a walk to Hastings Street in Noosa Heads, one of the main tourist areas and relaxed on the beach, before heading home for some fruit toast and a night of cable tv, the height of ... read more

We arrived in Brisbane early evening and caught the shuttle bus to our hostel. The YHA lived up to its usual high standards, with only the bathroom not clean! Aly put in a complaint and it was dealt with whilst we went out to explore and find some dinner. Without a map we managed to find our way to Queen Street the main shopping area, it must be Aly’s nose for shops! We ate in a tourist style café in the middle of the pedestrian street, which had a nice atmosphere. We spent the next couple of days seeing the sights of Brisbane. Day one we headed to South Bank and the Queensland Cultural Centre. We took the opportunity to visit the Andy Warhol exhibition at Queensland Modern Art Gallery. The exhibition was excellent containing much ... read more

Took off from a wet Melbourne and landed in an even wetter Cairns, but we have made it with all 80kgs of our belongings! Experienced the repercussions of this years first of many (apparently) cyclones! Now enjoying temperatures consistently in the 30’s. Spent the first couple of nights in the Cairns Central YHA, which was well located although, the resort wide intercom (including in the bedrooms!) was slightly Hi-de-Hi. Then spent four nights up in the Atherton Tablelands whilst on the hunt for somewhere more permanent to live and so that James could visit the school he is going to be working at. Had a whistle stop tour of the tourist sites, including waterfalls and lakes and were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the area. Things have been pretty hectic, since we moved down to ... read more

Just a quick update to fill you in on what we have been up to over the last few weeks, before we head up to Cairns on Saturday. For those of you who are not yet aware James has been offered a job in the Atherton Tablelands commencing end of Jan, so we are heading up to find somewhere to live. So before the chaos begins… We have been busy making sure we have not missed anything worth seeing in Melbourne. We have been to the zoo, Brunswick for some Lebanese cuisine, Chadstone shopping centre, Brighton Beach, Christmas shopping on Bourke Street and eaten yum cha at the Oriental Tea House. Sunday breakfasts have continued although we have got lazy, frequenting one place just down the road. One event really worth a mention was our trip ... read more

Port Fairy (2nd - 3rd October) We hit the road early, stopping at Beachport for breakfast and then heading on to Mt Gambier. Mt Gambier is near the South Australia/Victoria border and is famous for its lakes, craters and caves as a result of past volcanic activity in the area. We made a quick stop at the Blue Lake, so called for its brilliant blue colour. Don’t think the winter months do it justice, but it is blue, like most water! Adjusted our watches by half an hour at the border and to help us get over the jet lag made a stop in Portland for lunch. Not much to look at but a welcome stop all the same. The scenery on our drive has varied from vineyards to agricultural land (beef farming in particular), timber ... read more

Yesterday saw the start of our long drive back to Melbourne. We picked up the car at 10am and started the first leg of our journey; a 400km drive to Robe. First stop was the German village of Hahndorf for breakfast. This was one of the first German settlements in Australia and is a very pretty little place. They also do a nice bacon and egg toastie! The roads between Adelaide and Robe are long, straight and pretty quick. Finding a stop for lunch proved a little more challenging than breakfast. The ‘towns’ were spaced about half an hour apart and I can’t say that we actually noticed any of them. They generally consisted of a couple of houses and a layby. We ended up stopping at a roadhouse in Salt Creek complete with local hillbillies! ... read more

We have spent 5 nights in the ‘fare city’ of Adelaide and have really enjoyed our time here. Adelaide has the feel of a small town much like Cheltenham, although the population is 1.3 million!! There are lots of bars and restaurants and a good but small shopping precinct. Adelaide is the home of a great Belgian Beer Café, where we spent a nice afternoon drinking 8.9% Leffe Rossa (which kind of blew the dinner budget that day). This has been our first experience of backpacker hostel accommodation. The YHA is very comfortable much like a Travel Lodge although it is very noisy at night and has reminded us both of University accommodation. We need to get used to it though, as we will be staying in the YHA along the Great Ocean Road on our ... read more
