South America » Peru May 28th 2009

Geo: -13.1628, -72.5158From Poroy's station about 20 minutes away from the hotel, we boarded the Orient Express train, the Hiram Bingham, for the 3 1/2 hour trip to Aguas Calientes. The train was elegant with wonderful service and a fine brunch including good Peruvian wines. However, the train bumped along on the old track making the ride less than perfect. During the trip, we had a guide on board with us who explained about what we were seeing along the way and what we would see when we arrived at Machu Picchu. The guide is named Jhaninti, but she asked us to call her Honey, just to make it easier on us. (Although if you ask Philip, he'll say it's because she liked us.) Live entertainment on the train featured dueling guitarists who encouraged sing-a-longs. Several ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco May 27th 2009

Geo: -13.52, -71.99We flew non-stop to Cusco in the morning and were met at the plane by our guide and driver, Edwin and Edison. We checked into the Monasterio Hotel which was a monastery at one time. The guide did all the work of checking in and delivering the bags. I could get used to this personal service that has been available at every point in the trip. The guides and drivers have been taking good care of us. When we were driving to the hotel, the guide and driver discussed the best way to get there. A demonstration was going on in the city center where the people were protesting about unfair taxes. The hotel was just one block away from the demonstration area, but we were able to make it to the hotel just ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Paracas May 26th 2009

Geo: -13.8667, -76.2667Brady and Jose picked us up early to head for the Paracas peninsula which was about an hour north of Ica. When we got there we were able to take a boat out to see the Ballestas Islands. The boat did not stop at any of the islands, since they do not allow humans to land there usually. The islands are inhabited by lots of wildlife. We saw pelicans, sea lions, Humboldt penguins, boobies (the gray-footed ones), starfish, sand dollars, sea urchins, and lots more, especially lots of sea birds. Brady went along on the boat ride and did a great job of pointing out all the different creatures. He even found a spider crab on one of the cliffs, which seemed to be an unusual sighting. We also saw the Candelabra from the ... read more

Geo: -14.06, -75.75We were picked up by our guide and driver for the day, Brady and Jose, for the four-hour drive south to Ica. The main activity for the day was the flight over the Nasca Lines, but on the way we stopped at El Catador bodega in the town of Pisco to learn about how pisco, the beverage, is made. The family there has been making pisco in the same way for over 100 years still using equipment and methods from long ago. We tried their Vino Perfecto Amor, the wine of perfect love, which tasted a bit like a sherry. Philip tried all their piscos, and I tried a couple of them. The pure pisco at more than 80 proof had a bit of a kick. At the airport in Ica, we boarded a ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima May 24th 2009

Geo: -12.0931, -77.0465We arrived in Lima to start the adventure after a long day of traveling. Finally made it to the hotel around 11:30 p.m. Clearing customs and immigration was easy, but they do issue you an immigration card that you have to keep with you and return to them when leaving the country. The greeter and driver were at the airport as expected and took us straight to the hotel. Our wonderful, long-time travel agent, Paula Kay, arranged for the personal service for us. The greeter took care of getting us checked into the hotel, which was quite a convenience since we were pretty tired by that time.... read more
