Nineteen hours in a stiflingly hot, packed, unroadworthy chicken bus... hurtling along at ridiculous speed on pot-holed dirt roads... dealing with the chaos of Central American border crossings - first from Guatamala into El Salvador then Honduras brielfy before entering Nicaragua. Doesn´t sound too good, does it. We didn´t think so, so we flew. Nice little hour and a half where we didn´t fear for our lives at all. As Ally mentioned in the last blog, Guatamala was tough. Incredibly rewarding experience, but confronting. Along the road we´d heard fantastic things about Nicaragua and we weren´t disapointed. We landed in the capital, Managua, and went directly to Granada, which is stunning. It was founded in 1524 and stands on the northwestern shore of Lake Nicaragua in the shadow of the Mombacho Volcano. The lake feeds into ... read more

Ok so this was the part of the trip we had to have. After having spent weeks in Belize and Honduras in the "most beautiful places we've seen"... it was time to explore the real Central America, and wham what an eye opner Guatemala was. Mike mentioned in his last blog some time ago that the trip into Guats was long, stinking hot and through some pretty raw and rugged landscape. Brown, rocky mountains, with shanky towns built precariously on the edge, and the pollution was a killer. More than half the country lives below the poverty line and everywhere we turned we were met by beggars, some sporting what looked like torture wounds from the long running, and only recently ended civil war. One old man had obviously broken his leg many years ago and ... read more

On Roatan we met an American expat named Robert who has lived in Central America for 18 years. Nice guy, a little unusual, but who wouldn´t be after 18 years in this part of the world. Robert is an engineer and is on Roatan working on the water supply, when he told us was about to fail. We´d originally planned to move fairly quickly out of Honduras and into El Salvador because I´d read some travel blog a few months ago that said it was good. Robert gave us some pretty useful advice. ´´If I was travelling with a girlfriend, there is no way in the world I´d take her to El Salvador, really dangerous´´, he said. We changed our plans... and on more of his advice decided to explore a little more of Honduras - ... read more

I'm sitting here finishing off what has been the most delicious coconut smoothie I've ever had, my god it's amazing from a little place called Rudy's in Roatan. Actually all the food we've eaten so far this trip has been amazing.... we've found a new best friend in Mama Marie Sharp's chilli sauce, it's travelled with us since Belize, everywhere we go it's in Mike's backpack!! We've finally added some photos for you to check out, click on gallery and have a look. Most of our photos are on the little camera and we're yet to find a cord that fits it, once we do we'll put loads more pics from our sailing trip etc on the site. So we're in Roatan, on perhaps the most beautiful island we've ever seen, we've slowed our pace down ... read more

After an incredible few days in the Belize interior we raced back to the coast to link up with a sailing charter heading south. The 46ft ketch Raga Queen would be home and transport for the next three days, along with an eclectic group including two couples from the UK about our age and a handful more from the US and Canada a little older. Belize, at this time of year, may well be the perfect sailing destination. For three days we sailed under cloudless skies, pushed south by a constant 10 to 15 knots of north-east wind. We sailed inside the reef which runs along the entire coastline and so had perfectly flat water. Every two hours or so we would stop for some snorkelling or something eat, or to perhaps pull in a fish. ... read more

After a few days in Caye Caulker (and the Blue Hole dive Ally loved so much) we rented a car to head to the far west of Belize close to the Guatemala border. We did it by car rather than the local "chicken bus" (so called because locals take their chickens with them sometimes) because we are soft. Actually, we had to make it back to Caye Caulker to meet up with a saling boat to head south down to coast towards Guatamela and Honduras and time was a factor. Driving in Belize is interesting. They drive on the right hand side of the road, most of the time. I wasn't sure about the speed limit, it seemed more a case of how good your vehicle was. And there was a police check-point set up, which ... read more

This is our second crack after a detailed and sublimely written entry from San Ignacio - our understanding is a tree fell on a powerline, blacking out most of Belize and our beautiful work was lost. So, take two! After a long but largely uneventful flight we arrived on the little island of Caye Caulker, hello Caribbean!!! It's just as you would imagine it to, reggae music playing from every little bar and cafe, no-one moves fast - although we seemed intent on setting a cracking pace. Straight up we did what any good traveller does and headed out for beer. Sitting at this awesome bar - where the tables are in the water, we had one guy come up trying to sell us "the green stuff" when another guy approached offering to sell us a ... read more
