Punakiaki is a small town on the west coast famed for its pancake rocks, stacked formations of thin layers of rock. When the tide is high and the waves have any strength blow holes shoot water into the air. Near by are several nice walks, beaches and coves. The Truman track leads down to one such cove. Many postcards of the cove are sold across the south island. The pancake rocks weren’t so impressive, we were unlucky with the weather and therefore no blow holes were active. The beach behind was really nice though. Spent the day walking with Robin and Anders. Had ice cream, but no pancakes.... read more

Marahau is a small village tucked on the edge of the Abel Tasman National Park. Due to arriving at short notice all the huts for the Abel Tasman Track were booked out over the next few nights - I wouldn’t be able to walk the three day hike, billed as one of the best in New Zealand. Anders, Joe and I wanted to walk on the track so paid for a water taxi 25km up the coast and then walked back to Marahua. The walk was very easy, very few extended rises or descents. The most difficult parts of the track were the descents down to the beaches. The many beaches were the highlight, golden sand cool clear water, and seals playing just yards from the beach. We met Robin from Boston in the water taxi, ... read more

Nelson is a larger town just south of the Golden Bay. It¡¯s known for its excellent wine, hippys and fruit. We travelled down in Freddy¡¯s car, which he bough for less than the one I had, has taken him further and is in a lot better condition. In the hostel we stayed at we met Joe, Joe had just walked the Queen Charlotte¡¯s Track the day before us. Joe works for 7 months a year in Snowdonia and for four months is free to travel or work on his sculpture. Lucky guy, has a job he loves with time to enjoy other things in life, at least I¡¯m starting to get ideas. The big thing we did in Nelson was ¨C LORD OF THE RINGS ¨C The Two Towers. We went to see the movie two ... read more

The Queen Charlotte Track is a 72km tramp from Ships Cove in the north of the Queen Charlotte Sounds to Anawika in the south. One of the nicest things about the track is the native bush that lines the walk for most of the time, the views across the sounds, and the nice places to stay on the way. The easiest way to walk the track is to catch a water taxi up to Ships Cove and spend the next few days walking back to Aniwaka. On the way to Ships Cove we were lucky enough to see a pod of Dusky Dolphins, they played for a while in the wake of the boat. We decided to walk the track over three days and two nights, having purchased only enough trekking food (chocolate, cakes and tuna ... read more

I had phoned and booked the Jugglers Rest Backpackers a few days in advance after reading the name in the BBH guide. Sounded like a place I should visit, juggling is one of my now too many hobbies. Going across on the ferry I read in the Lonely Planet - run by professional jugglers! Going to learn some new tricks! True enough after walking across from the ferry point (note: check for free pickups next time) I walk into the yard of the Jugglers Rest and there are guys passing clubs, spinning diablos and a few guitars lying around. Nice, I felt at home straight away. Gary an English guy had come over to New Zealand as a young man, street performing, met his wife, started a juggling shop in Christchurch. He now lives with his ... read more

After being ill in Featherston I went to wellington and checked into the closest hostel to the train station. The downtown backpackers, slightly away from downtown but really close to the train station and ferry port. Went to McDonalds, about the only time I eat McDonalds is when I’m hungover - the fat, sugar and salt content of a value meal seem to be just what my body craves when recovering from too much drink. I purchased my meal - super size - walked towards a free seat and dropped the lot. Enough - I was starting to think that my run of bad luck would just continue - but then the nice manager gave me the meal again. I walked more carefully to the seats and started to feel a little better as the junk ... read more

I decided to drive to Wellington. My car had been going nicely for about 1000 kilometres, picked a couple of hitchhikers. About 20km from Wellington the oil light flickered on, and off and on. I started looking for a petrol station to stop and check it out. The temperature was low… in fact almost on the bottom of the scale. The oil light stayed on a rattling sound started. I stopped. The engine was so hot. Waited. I had reached the edge of a town called Greytown. I waited some more. I decided to start the engine and see if I could get to the middle of the town and into a garage. The engine exploded. Smoke and steam and noise and smells overwhelmed the car. The two german girls that I had given a lift ... read more

Napier was destroyed in 1931 by a large earthquake, the town was quickly rebuilt in the style of the time, Art Deco. Napier is now renowned as one of the world’s best examples of Art Deco architecture. For $2 from the visitors centre a map of the town with descriptions of the best buildings can be bought. Following this leads you round the town in a couple of hours. I tried to take a photo of every building on the map, but can’t remember which building is which now. I stayed in Stable Lodge Backpackers, a really nice little place. With free Internet use, the first since San Francisco. I went to Cape Kidnappers with Sandra and Cheika from Germany and Japan. Cape Kidnappers is so named because when Captain Cook set anchor there and went ... read more

High on the central plateua of the North Island is the Tongariro National Park. The National Park consists of three major peaks Mount Tongariro, Mount Nqauruhoe, Mount Ruapehu, given to the country by Horonuku Te Heuheu Tukino and chief of the Ngati Tuwhretoa people in 1887 - New Zealand’s first national park. In the winter the attraction is the skiing in the summer the walking, or tramping. I stayed in the National Park Village and the National Park Backpackers, a hostel with New Zealands highest climbing wall, (from sea level). Spent the first evening at the hostel climbing around on the indoor walls, the first time I have climbed and really enjoyed it. On an indoor wall the holds are all marked really clearly, but allows you to gain strength and technique in a very safe ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua December 5th 2002

After a few quiet evenings on the east of the North Island I decided that I needed to meet some people again. Rotorua is nicknamed Roto-Vegas by some of the locals due the huge amount of tourism that goes on there. Having been to Las Vegas the nickname is a little oversized. Although tourist oriented, see the mud pools, smell the sulphur, the scale and size of the city is along the lines of a small town back home. The Funky Green Voyager is where I chose to stay. Run by Gerard an eclectic verbally active host with a brusque but friendly style. Must find a really big word for Gerard. I spent my first day in Rotorua at the Wai-O-Tapu - Thermal Wonder World, a collection of smelly coloured and bubbling pools, and the Lady ... read more
