When I graduated from University in December 2004, with my Master's and Bachelor's Degree, I decided that I wasn't ready to settle into a lifetime job in the U.S.A. Instead, I went to an International School Job Fair, and am now traveling the world, one International School at a time! I speak English, French, and Dutch, have learned Italian while living in Switzerland, and can't wait to pick up more languages along the way. I teach Upper Elementary Grades, and love working with children. I'm using this site as a way to stay connected with friends and family both from home, and that I've met along the way; perhaps in lieu of my infamous e-mail updates. Feel free to leave me messages, and enjoy sharing in my travels!

*My apologies on the delayed final South Africa post! Coming back to the USA, sorting through jetlag, and celebrating my birthday took all my time and energy!* So, in our final week in Cape Town, we were partnered up with our Edunova counterparts and each partnership was assigned one of the workshop schools. We then spent a few hours per day in that school, following up with the teachers that attended our workshop, meeting with the administration, and helping to get the ball rolling on the IT goals for that school. Every school was very different. Some looked similar in construction to the school we'd held the workshops at, but had newer computer labs and systems, others were in far worse shape and in very dangerous areas. The school that I was assigned to- Bongolethu Primary ... read more

We have been incredibly fortunate with this Cape Town winter we’ve found ourselves in. It’s gorgeous! This weekend probably hit the peak of my incredulity at this winter weather- I spent all day Saturday in shorts and a t-shirt. Winter wear, indeed. So, Saturday brought a relaxed morning, where I enjoyed some quality quiet time with the couch while Noble and Sarah went to run their errands. Around noon, we hopped in the car and drove out to Cape Point, which we can see from our balcony, but is about an hour+ drive away. It is the southwestern-most tip of Africa, and affords some really nice views of the ocean, beaches, and the lighthouses. Yes, there are two lighthouses, because the first one was built too low and couldn’t actually be seen by the approaching ships! ... read more

When I wrote last weekend, I was nervous about how the workshops would go this week: how it would feel to take a step back and just mentor the process, how the facilitators would do, how the teachers would be. Turns out, my nerves were unecessary, and everything went really well! We ended up having about 30 teachers show up (50 were registered, but it is their holiday time and several were probably putting relaxation on a higher priority rung than ICT workshops), and we split them into two groups: those who had attended an Edunova workshop previously, and those who hadn’t. We had 2 locations to use, and the returning teachers went to the Edunova center for their sessions, while the first-timers worked at Mkhanyiseli Primary School (near to the Edunova center, also in the ... read more

So the remainder of our work week with the Edunova trainers, teachers, and IT Entrepreneurs (young adults) was really pretty great. We let them all have a hand at working in groups to facilitate a session and try out different grouping strategies, work strategies, and reflections. The group that I mentored did an excellent job, if I do say so myself, and as I watched them lead the session and work with their colleagues, I could tell that they had internalized some of what I’d told them about working with teachers and how to lead sessions. I hope that they are able to continue with that hard work and skill acquisition as we go into week 2- where they are in charge of the entire week-long workshop for about 60 teachers from local township schools! We ... read more

Well, we are officially in Cape Town now! Work is in full swing, but life is comfortably less hectic than it was when we hit the ground running in the Eastern Cape. On our way out of town on Saturday, we drove to The Lion Park. A little black sign on the side of the road with a dangerously sharp hairpin turn to go into a driveway of someone’s farm property. We paid our entrance fee of about $5, bought one of the little optional feed bags, and were given the instruction of “the wild dogs are here, the cheetah is there, the lions are over there, and there are 4 new little lion cubs that you can go in to play with, but just be warned that they do bite and scratch.” And with that, ... read more

So many memories already! Since last I wrote, our next day of work was quite unexpected. At noon, the power went out, which, for an IT workshop, is not good. We spent the afternoon making the best of the situation and pointing out how realistic this scenario really was for these teachers in their schools. We had the teachers working on lessons, projects, and ideas that they could use in their schools, using the tools already on their laptops- no internet. They were so inspired, and so hard-working. It was absolutely heart-warming to see. Today, on our last day of the weeklong workshop, we had the groups come up and share the projects that they had started that day, and spent the rest of the week refining. I was so pleased with the leaps and bounds ... read more

And thus, the next adventure begins! From the beginning. I made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare and met up with Sarah, the other volunteer on the programme with me. We chatted a bit, until the plane started boarding and it was time to face the 16 hour longest. flight. ever. Realistically, I’m sure there are longer flights, but this one was pretty darn long. I watched 2 movies, until my ears started hurting from the headset provided by the airlines, read some of my book, slept as much as I could, and fought off my leg cramps as discretely as possible so as not to continually kick the seat in front of me, nor wake up my seat partner and I deftly hopped over her to wander the aisles. My flight ... read more

When I moved to Tanzania 3 years ago, I knew that I wanted to become involved in the local community, and do some service activities in addition to my professional life. In my first year here, I needed to adjust to the new workplace, community, and lifestyle, so adding too many extras on top of that wasn't really feasible. When my second year began, I was determined to stay true to my goal. First I joined the Dar Animal Haven. They rescue stray dogs and cats from the streets and find them foster or permanent homes. We also began a volunteer dog training course on Friday afternoons, where we helped foster families and new owners learn some basic commands and control techniques. This group has afforded me friendships with a very diverse and intelligent group of ... read more

Well, I finally did it! I conquered my goal to reach the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro! It only took two tries! What made this trip really special as well, was that I was able to do it with my mother, and two great family friends. Mom arrived mid-week while I still had 2 days of work. She had some time to relax and get used to the time change, while I tended to the last few things that I needed to do before leaving. On Thursday, April 1, we left with plenty of time to get to the airport and be there 1.5 hours before our flight. Unfortunately, holiday traffic was against us, and it took well over 2.5 hours to get there! Needless to say, we missed our flight, and there were no more flights ... read more

For the past year, my friend Nora and I have been taking kickboxing lessons here in Dar. Our instructor comes to our campus and we have a one hour private lesson in our campus gymnasium, twice a week. Perhaps one of the coolest parts about this new boxing hobby, is that our instructor used to be the Junior East African Champion, and his brother- Japhet Kaseba- is the Champion! Talk about credentials for a trainer! So along with our lessons, our instructor- Jackson- also took us to some local boxing matches. We went to the quarterfinals and then to the championship matches. We were the only wazungu (foreigners) at the match, so we were awarded immediate VIP status and seating, and got to enjoy the matches from an excellent vantage point. It was a great way ... read more
