We set off after breakfast to head to the Drak Yerpa Monastery, we drove out of Lhasa city and the somewhat crazy traffic and set off for the mountain road. As we started to get higher the views just got better and better with snow capped mountains in the distance and the city below. We stopped on the mountain pass about 40 minutes in to the drive for a photo opportunity. There is a section of the road just covered in prayer flags and paintings of what look like ladders on the rocks to symbolise the steps to nirvana. Once a prayer flag has been placed somewhere they cannot be removed, they’re just left to nature and over time, the colours fade and the fabric disintegrates. I got off the mini bus and just looked in ... read more

The last 2 days have been pretty full on so I’ll combine them in to one blog... hopefully I don’t bore everyone too much :-) So the first full day in Lhasa started with a walk to Jokhang Temple, with a couple of stops along the way so we know where to get laundry done and where the supermarket is etc. You’ll all be pleased to know, I managed to buy deodorant! Hooray! Although it is a men’s one as it was the only one they had in the whole supermarket. Apparently, women don’t wear deodorant here. We walked down a few little backstreets and stopped off at a tiny shop selling rice and lentils and also a huge selection of yak cheese. Some of it is sold in small blocks sold on a string, one ... read more

Today, I left Nepal and set off for Tibet. As a group, we were collected from the hotel around 9am to go to the embassy and collect our passports and permit to enter Tibet. Our flight was due to leave at 11:30am so it was a little bit tight in terms of time. Our guide left us waiting in the mini bus while he went inside to collect them, he returned to us around 10:15am and we still had a way to go to get to the airport and if the exit from Nepal was anything like the entrance it was about to be a complete nightmare! We entered the airport and went to the check in desk and were told that any batteries or aerosols in our check in luggage had to be removed and ... read more

This morning we set off at 9am to Changu Narayan, we’d been advised the previous evening it would take a while to get there due to the traffic at the time we were leaving. As I imagined, it was absolute bedlam on the roads, I really don’t have a clue how people continue to live! I also learnt today that the law here states the driver of a motorbike/ moped (of which there are thousands) has to wear a helmet, whereas a pillion doesn’t - absolutely mental and it’s not unusual to see whole families on a moped. I was feeling a bit rough this morning as I started taking altitude sickness medication in readiness for arriving in Tibet on Wednesday, so I took a little nap on the way :-) We followed the main road ... read more

I had a pretty lazy morning catching up on some sleep, tucked into some momos for lunch - they are amazing steamed dumplings packed full of spices and flavour - a couple of strong coffees to set me up for my afternoon tour. I was picked up at 3pm and the first stop was The Great Boudha Stupa, this was a few km’s away from the hotel but didn’t take too long in the minibus. We stopped on a main road and we’re told “we’re here”, initially, I was a little confused as all I could see were commercial buildings, what seems to be typical potholes the size of a house in the road and loads of rubble and dust and no sign of any world heritage site! Our guide took us down an alley way ... read more

After what seemed like forever, I finally boarded my flight from Delhi to Kathmandu. This is a flight I have been dreading since I added Nepal to my itinerary, but, as far as flights go it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. Yes, it was really quite bumpy on the descent into Kathmandu, but, I survived! I even dealt with having a window seat and took some pictures as well... for those who know me, you know how much of a big deal this is. On arrival into Kathmandu, I was expecting the long queues to obtain a visa as I’d read up on it before I left, I just didn’t know quite how long. I’m pretty sure the queuing in the airport was longer than the flight from Delhi! So, ... read more

After doing some epic packing, I set off from Kota Kinabalu for what would be a 40 journey to get back home. I boarded the plane in Kota Kinabalu with very mixed emotions, very glad to be getting back home to family and friends and of course my cat, who I missed so much, but, also disappointed to be leaving a place I'd fallen in love with. I flew to Singapore for my connecting flight (after a 10 hour lay over). The flight to Singapore was a little over 2 hours, it went pretty quickly, I arrived in Singapore and went to the transit area for a ridiculously long wait until my flight back. Shortly after arriving, I booked myself on to the free tour of Singapore from the airport. To kill some time I had ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu October 28th 2015

For the last couple of nights I've been staying in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of the eastern state of Sabah. The city itself is really quite small, but, incredibly busy. Upon arrival here, I had about 20 minutes to sort out what I needed to go on a tour of a city with a guide for a couple of hours. We started off by going across the road from my hotel to what looked like derelict land with a few pillars on it, my guide explained that this was one of the oldest buildings in Kota Kinabalu, but it burnt down in the 1990's, it previously housed all the historical maps of the area (thankfully kept in the vault and they weren't destroyed in the fire). Developers have tried the buy the land, but the local ... read more

After seeing the orang-utans and sun bears at sepilok, I was taken to the Sim Sim jetty in Sandakan for a boat journey to the Abai Jungle Lodge. The boat journey took just over an hour and was a bit choppy in parts. I arrived at the lodge and was taken to my room which I'd been warned was basic and had no air-con, I have to say I was really quite pleasantly surprised, the room was lovely and although there was no air-con there was a huge fan on the ceiling which did a lot in helping cool the room. The lodge is situated the river, surrounded by thick rainforest. I had a little time before my first boat ride up the river so walked round the jungle boardwalks around the lodge to see if ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary October 24th 2015

A visit to Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre was one of the reasons I decided to visit Borneo so I was very excited about today! We set off from the hotel and after a 5 minute drive we arrived at the centre, put all our things in a locker, paid my fee for taking in a camera and I was on my way. With my guide, we walked down the board walks to the nursery area and one of the workers was walking along holding hands with 2 adolescent orang-utans, taking them to another area of the centre, one of them was completely bald and looked so odd. They walked straight past me and I could hardly believe I was so close to such an amazing animal. At the centre they work with orphaned baby orang-utans and ... read more
