Last night was my first night staying at the Sepilok Nature Reserve, I went to bed quite early because I was worn out after the last few days. As the hotel is on the edge of the rainforest it gets pretty noisy at night, I just didn't realise just how noisy it can be! It took me ages to get to sleep and then I was woken by thunder a couple of hours later! The weather calmed down and the weird and wonderful noises of the rain forest returned. Today I had a free day with no plans really. I had a late(ish) breakfast, got ready and walked to the Rainforest Discovery Centre which is about 20 mins down the road from the Sepilok Nature Resort. I paid for my ticket when I arrived, it was ... read more

Today I said a very sad farewell to Eric and left Kuching, he's been SO good for the last week and I'll really miss him. Most of my day has been spent either on a plane or in an airport. I caught my first flight from Kuching to Kota Kinabalu and then a connecting flight from there to Sandakan. When I got to the gate at Sandakan and saw the plane it filled me with dread! For anyone that knows me, you know I hate flying and little planes are my worst nightmare - but in actual fact, the flight itself wasn't too bad and thankfully only took around 40 minutes. I was collected at the airport by my driver and was taken to my hotel for the next two nights - Sepilok Nature Resort. My ... read more

Today I went to Bako National Park, which is the oldest national park in Sarawak, to go wildlife spotting. We set off relatively early to board the boat for the 30 minute journey to the park. After registering when we arrived, we went to the jetty ready to board the boat and there was an otter just next to the jetty with its head popping up out of the water, it then went over to the bank and got out and I saw it running into the trees - the wildlife spotting was off to a good start! The boat ride was pretty choppy on the way there, luckily I don't suffer from sea sickness! We arrived at the jetty and got off the boat, as I climbed the steps there was a macaque sat at ... read more

So today was the day I'd be heading off into the rainforest. We were up pretty early, I went in the shower room which consists of a shower (as you'd expect) that isn't working as there hasn't been any rain for quite a few weeks, so a couple of pans of cold water was as good as it was going to get. I opened the door and there was THE BIGGEST cockroach I have ever seen in my life just sat on the wall. I called Eric to the rescue, he promptly ran off and shouted for Gatzam to sort it! Problem averted, so I went for my shower. Then it was time for breakfast the Malay Village way, fried noodles with really hot spicy chicken, sticky rice cake that was bright green, peanut butter pancakes ... read more

This morning I was picked up by my guide, Eric, and we drove for around 90 minutes toward the coast. Driving through, there wasn't too much to see, a few houses and a couple of businesses. We then met the boat man from the village where I'd be staying for 2 nights. We loaded all our gear on to the boat and took a seat which sounds a doddle, I can assure you, it's not! The boat headed down river toward the sea, it got a bit bumpy initially because of a change in tides and I was so glad I had a cushion to sit on! I'd love to say the view from the boat was amazing, however, there is a haze covering much of the country due to forest fires in Indonesia - it's ... read more

This morning, I spent the day on a walking tour of Kuching - the capital of Sarawak- the name is said to have derived from the Malay word for cat, kucing and is known as 'cat city', as a result there are a few cat statues dotted around, but surprisingly very few cats! We set off from the hotel and quickly ended up in a really small alley way which links 2 of the old streets in this area together, half way down the alley we found the Indian Muslim Mosque which is pretty well hidden and was the first in Sarawak, built in 1837. After a few photos, we headed off to Gambier Street with numerous spice and textile shops; the smells from the herbs and spices was amazing as you walked on by. Part ... read more

Yesterday was a really quiet day, we left Yala National Park and headed off for an overnight stop in Tangalle. We arrived at our hotel somewhere around lunchtime and were free to relax for the rest of the day, this for me meant a swim in the pool followed by far too many beers and cocktails in the bar!! The hotel was located next to the beach, but, the sea was really rough. It's definitely advisable to keep an eye on the warning flags before going anywhere near it. The last day of our tour sent us ultimately to Colombo with a few stop offs on the way. We stopped at a lighthouse which was in a beautiful location, again the sea was pretty rough so there were some spectacular views of the waves hitting the ... read more

This morning was an early start, a little blurry eyed I made my way to reception with my escort in the dark. We soon set off to the entrance of Yala National Park, it took around 30 minutes by the time our guide had bought the tickets. I really, really wanted to see a leopard - I'd be made up if I did, but, the closest we came was some footprints in the sand unfortunately. We did see plenty of other wildlife on the game drive though, crocodiles, mongoose, hares, a golden jackal, spotted deer, peacocks and loads of other birds. Our driver had heard there are 2 female leopards with 2 cubs each in the area and he was doing his best to track them down. Just before we gave up and started heading back ... read more
