Well here I am back in the UK. But only just! My flight from Tokyo was 12.10. The airport is about 1.5 - 2 hours away by bus so playing safe I booked the 7.25 bus from the Hotel, which promptly arrived and departed on time. This wasn't going to be my favourite journey as I had without doubt the most annoying person sitting behind me, you can possbily guess their nationality! The annoying person was a perfect back seat driver. She knew where the bus driver should be going to and which roads. I did ask her how many times she had been to Tokyo this was her first visit! All this would of been ok ish, if we hadn't of hit a massive grid lock on the expressway. The traveller behind went into overdrive, ... read more

Hi, Had a quick dash to nara this morning. Shame really as this area is of real historical value to the whole Japanese civilisation. Here the seat of goverment was held until 536 an no its the year not the time. Loads and loads to see but only a few hours to do it. So went to the Worlds biggest woodern scuplure held in the worlds oldest and biggest woodern building. I really wished I had time to do the Museum here but the size of it I would not of had time to do it justice. Then the train back to Kyoto and the Bullet to Tokyo for my last night in Japan :-( It has really been great here. Would I come back .. Yes. Do I want to go back Home .... Really ... read more

My choice of clothing. When I got up their was a slight drizzle so I only took my rain coat not my fleece. Jeepers was I cold on that trip! A buffet boat pulled up and I had some white hot stuff, god knows what it was but it was hot! In the afternoon I headed back to central Kyoto and took in a few more shrines/Temples retail outlets ... read more

Hi, This morning I got up and went down to the basement for breakfast. and no its in a different area to the communal baths! Made a bit of a social boo boo. I forget to take my house slippers off, I realised halfway across the floor as I was looking back at all the Japanese faces staring at me as I slid back the screen doors so I kinda skipped/Floated/panicked my way back to the doors and threw my slipped off then re-entered looking very sheepish. It seems I am the only westerner staying at this hotel but the staff are really friendly and dont mind my really poor Japanese, as they are very good at english. So I had a half day tour of Kyoto this morning. hmmm filled with the usual complaining Americans, ... read more

Hi, I have just re read some of my entries and the spelling has/is terrible, in my defence I am not using a standard english keyboard at any of the places i have had internet access. You wont guess the amount of times that I have written an entry then to see it disappear, so in some part, it has been frustration. So while i have this machine I th ought I would rattle on for a bit on thoughts and facts I have had and learned 1) Comb overs. The international sign of bad taste, the same here as England. 2) The Japanese love their food, every other stall sells some sort of food. The variations of the Bento box is king 3) Rules. The Japanese like order through rules and tradition but they like ... read more

Headed of to the peace park today which is very close to the hotel. The first building is the peace museum which at 40 yen is very good value. The museum starts with a history of Hiroshima how it became a garrison town for the 5th division and teh fact it wasn't bombed at all during the war prior to little boy being dropped. then to 8.15 am eyewitness accounts for what they were doing at the time, it is worth noting that alot of women and children were out on the street demolishing buildings to create fire breaks around the military installations in case of bombing. Well the tears were rolling down my face most people around were reacting to the story as it played out in fornt of us. Many (men) actually walked back ... read more

Hi, Had an interesting evening last night, Teaching English to a Japanese bar owner, in return I got some japanese lessons! Anyway got up this morining to catch the 9.42 train from Takayama to Nagoya then change there and head to Himeji. I checked out early from the Inn, they kindly gave me a set of veneered chopsticks. I was soo taken aback, these things are not cheap and soo very kind of them. I made my way to the station and kinda planned to go for a wander as i had loads of time, got talking to a woman walking her dog who is trying to learn English (another one) so she invited me to her husbands coffee shop where we chatted for a while, as i left she gave me a paper crane, it ... read more

Retyped from hand written text Right now I am writing this on paper, Drinking the usual Green tea whilst cooling down from a heat I thought was not possible for a human being to endure. Yes I have just had a bath at the Inn. In the traditional manner there is a shared bath but here one bath is all you get. But as with the other it is set to the usual superheated temperatur which in my opinion is only possible with a kettle element. But I have to admit it feels great even if this time it is ordinary water! Right on todats happenings. Got up at the usual 6am I had arranged for breakfast at 7am so I had time to pop to the morning market just across the bridge (for the veg ... read more

Hi, Glad I bought the extra memory card now. . So Hakone to takayama. As you regular readers would know the transfer bus picked me up from the main building hotel at 10.30. I forgot how high we were as a short climb out of the crater then a massive long downhill section to get to Okenawa Station, where I was to pick up the bullet Train to Nagoya. This would of been easier if I had sent my suitcase on ahead, but I forgot. As i got in the Onsen this mroning and it kind of boiled my brain and made me lose the wisdom I gained pushing the wisdom thingy at the temple at Kamakura. Anyway me and my massive suitcase made it to the train. boy these suckers are fast and very smooth. ... read more
