Check out the video of Russia which I uploaded. Russia in 30 seconds. click here for the video. Password is warta App tip. '1 second everyday'. Take a short video every day, select one second in this all and then stitch weeks months or the whole year together. That's how the attached video was done.. Great fun and it's amazing how much you can see in a second. Saint Petersburg must be the most visited city in Russia judging by the masses of tourists we saw. What a difference to the first few Russian cities we visited where we got excited when we saw another tourist. We understood why everyone is here once we explored the city. Given that the Germans shelled the city for over 800 days during the second world war it is surprising ... read more

Try getting that song out of your head... Ok so you haven't heard from us for a while. Germany and Austria kept us busy but we are trying to catch up. This will be interesting in internet starved Cuba... Stay tuned. After a long wait the Moscow blog is yours to enjoy. Moscow greeted us with a massive rainfall which literally flooded the streets. At one stage we were concerned that our taxi would get stuck in the floods. The unfortunate side effect of this was that the toilet in our hotel overflowed. Nice welcome Moscow! Moscow made up for it though. What a city! We spent most of our time in Moscow on foot exploring the city. According to my phone we did 14 km on the first day and we have come close to ... read more

Europe » Russia » Urals » Yekaterinburg July 18th 2016

The train A short hop of only 21 hours, which had been made a lot longer by our compartment companion who snored like a Russian bear (no not Kellie a proper Russian who shared the 4 bed compartment with us). He redeemed himself by showing Russian hospitality and offering to drive us to our accommodation. Yekaterinburg A very pleasant town which is mostly remembered as the place where Russia's last Tsar and and his family were murdered in 1918 by the Bolshevikts. The house where it happened was demolished in the 80 but a massive church has been build on the same site 15 years ago. The tsar was also made a martyr by the Russian orthodox church. Just shows that history depends on who writes it... The city itself has wide cobblestone and tram filled ... read more

Ok this becoming a habit... Greetings from the train from Novosibirsk to Yekaterinburg. This time its a short 21 hour trip so I better start writing. A childhood dream It is said that Russian scientist studied Lenin's brain (fortunately for him once he was dead) for over 40 years to understand why he was such a genius. The same might happen to my brain to understand the twisted logic and selective memory that brought us to Novosibirsk. I don't know if you remember a lot of your geography lessons at school. My memory is bad anyway and I have close to no recollection of my school years but I can clearly remember that we studied the Russian map and where the various natural resources in Russia are (god only knows why we did this. Maybe it ... read more

Europe » Russia » Siberia » Irkutsk July 9th 2016

Again greetings from the trans Siberian train. This time we are on our way from Irkutsk to Novosibirsk but more of that in the next blog. The train The last time I wrote we were on our first of four legs on the trans Mongolian/Siberian train heading from Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia towards Irkutsk in Russia. Mongolia can be surprisingly hot and we were sweating in our non aircon compartments. You are mistaken if you think this was due to me wanting to save some $$$. There just was no aircon carriage in sight. Then again I wouldn't have booked it to save $$ anyway :) The trains are of an older rolling stock with a lovely 70s interior but are kept in pristine condition by the Provodnitsas who are ticket inspectors, carriage attendants, cleaning ladies, provider ... read more

Sometimes places are not what I expect them to be. I didn't know that ... in Mongolia ... it can be 36 degrees hot ... they have a full on amusement park with roller coaster ... there is no litter in the streets ... there are no dogs or cats to be seen ... they have loads of coffee shops ... they (mostly) obey the traffic laws, no honking ... there are supermarkets that sell everything from motorbikes, boats, generators, german crisps, chocolate and german beer ... After our long flight and once we picked up our travel companion Kathy in Beijing, we finally arrived in Ulaanbataar. As usual Dillon survived the flight better than any of the adults. After we checked into our guest house (which had forgotten about my bed. so I slept on ... read more

Its time to say goodbye to Koalas, Kangaroos and meat pies (Dillon will be sad...) and hello to adventure, excitement, no work (yay), uncomfortable beds, fermented horse milk and grumpy Russians amongst many other things. Dillon was quite sick last week but luckily he is now back to normal and ready to go and head back into summer. From today onwards we will follow the warm weather and the next time we have to deal with cold weather will be in May, June next year. We are currently at the airport with our 40+kg worth of luggage and ready to board our flight to Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia via Kulala Lumpur and Beijing including a nerve wrecking 8 hour stopover at Beijing airport... starting at 1am... with a 4 year old. What could go wrong.... In Beijing ... read more

I got injured in South Africa, spend 36 hours on a bus in Mozambique, wondered what the fuss is about in Malawi, hunted lions in Tanzania, didn't get robbed in Kenya, saw gorillas in Rwanda, nearly drowned in Uganda, got a coffee addiction in Ethiopia, marveled at pyramids in Egypt, played Indiana Jones in Jordan, froze my a** off in Germany, went downhill in Italy, laid on the beach in Thailand, travelled VIP style in Malaysia and had a Singapore Sling in Singapore just to return to where I started. Yep it’s over. 7 1/2 months gone and I'm back to normal life. Well almost. There is the little problem of finding a job but hey the summer is in full swing and there are beaches aplenty. (Update: as I was lazy this is (unfortunately?) not ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » George Town February 5th 2009

After a crueling 12 hour bus journey using three different busses we finally arrived in Georgetown in Malaysia. Georgetown is one of those famous cities which once we the powerhouses of the world and now have sunk back to obscurity again. The former glory can be seen in some of the houses the local merchants build here and most impressively in the Easter and Oriental hotel. The E&O was build and owned by the same brothers which later opened the Raffles hotel in Singapore. I was excited like a little kid when I saw in our guidebook that they have Tiffin on every Saturday. That all despite the fact that I, until this day, have no idea what Tiffin is but I want it anyway. To my disgust and disappointment Tiffin had been cancelled which caused ... read more
