Shuttles and tired drivers There are two reasons why we went to El Salvador the so called "murder capital of the world". One was that I wanted to add El Salvador to the list of countries visited and you have to stay at least a night to make it count. The other reason was that we didn't fancy sitting in a shuttle for 16 hours straight to go between Leon and Antigua in Guatemala our ultimate destination. Shuttles are small 10 seater mini buses that are used to well shuttle around tourists between the main sites in Central America. We had used them before and we were using one to go from Nicaragua through Honduras to El Salvador. Our journey started at 2am in the morning with a pickup from our hostel. We finally left Leon ... read more

Surf and turtles - San Juan Del Sur I didn't get to see to much of San Juan as I was still sick. At least we had a nice hostel with a roof top area full of hammocks and a very impressive coastal view with nice sunsets. The town also features a Rio de Janeiro style jesus statue high on a cliff looking back to Costa Rica and the southern coast of nicaragua. Very scenic. The place to be if you have fever, aching eyes, pain in the knee joints and are tired all the time. Pretty much the symptoms of Zika or Dengue fever. Unfortunately by the time I dragged myself to the doctor it was Saturday which meant that all the laboratories doing tests were closed and I had to wait another two days. ... read more

Border crossings I was dreading the border crossing between Panama and Costa Rica as the Costa Ricans sometimes request a onward ticket which proves that you leave the country within the visa validity period. As we don't have a schedule and plan to go overland to Mexico we do not have such a ticket. Being the paranoid and organised me I purchased some plane tickets from Costa Rica to Mexico on the day just to rock up to the border and no one wanted to see them. Luckily I could cancel the tickets on the spot for a full refund. Guess better prepared than sorry. surfer dude - Puerto Viejo Our first stop in Costa Rica was Puerto Viejo a surfer town not far away from the border. We found a nice accommodation with loads of ... read more

Panama city We flew into Panama city and coming from Cuba the city seems like a different world. A large, busy, modern airport and skyscrapers galore. The difference in wealth between Panama and Cuba is striking. We setup camp in the old town of Panama which is part crumbling and part superbly renovated, home to the president and several wealthy Panamanians and yet situated only metres away from a very poor community and dodgy "don't go ther after dark" neighbourhood. Up until recently this was not a desireable location and most of the buildings were in ruins. Then someone discovered that tourists like old colonial towns and started to renovate. Now the whole place is either renovated, being renovated or waiting to be renovated. It will be quite beautiful in the near future. There are many ... read more

Password is warta Hurricane In a previous blog I asked how intelligent it is to come to Cuba in the middle of the Hurricane season. Turns out it has less to do with intelligence and more with luck. Right now there is the biggest Hurricane in the last 10 years ripping through the southern part of Cuba. The same place we just left a week ago... With a slightly different schedule we could be in the midst of it. Luckily we left for Panama which is not affected. Vinales After the big city we left the smoke and pollution behind us and went to the countryside to a place called Vinales. It is one of the many UNESCO protected sites in Cuba and is famous for its limestone mountains that have been formed due to some geological abnormality in this area. This time we didn't have accommodation pre booked and did it the good old backpacker way of getting off the bus and getting harassed by casa owners where everyone has the best place. Turned out well though as we found a nice place including rooftop terrace with view of the mountains. Vinales is a small rural town where a lot of cowboys still ride horses in the streets or drive horse carts. These are as much part of the street scene as trucks ... read more

Happy 101 travel blogs!!! Yes unbelievable but true this is travel blog 101. Is there anybody out there who read them all???? Ping me if you did. You deserve a medal or a drink.. Intelligence The question if it's intelligent to go to Cuba and central America in the middle of the hot, wet, hurricane season was on my mind for a while. So far it has proven to be a good decision. The heat and the occasional downpour are the worst we experienced so far. Hope it stays that way. Fidel's country Cuba is quite a contrast after Germany. One day you drive 180km per hour over an autobahn, can buy whatever you wish and the next you are in a socialist country where time stood still since 1959 and the supermarkets still have the ... read more

The Austrian Alps Departing Ulm we headed south toward Austria stopping for lunch and a stroll around the cute island medieval town of Lindau on Lake Constance with spectacular views across the lake to the Swiss alps. We then drove high into the mountains crossing the border into Austria destined for the rural alpine village of Schoppernau where Ralph spent many childhood family holidays. This tiny village is situated in the narrow flat land of a valley surrounded by steep white capped mountains. In Winter it is the base of a popular ski resort. Arriving at our b & b we discovered a nostalgically decorated Austrian farmhouse perched a top of its cattle barn. Being summer the cattle were up in the mountains and not tucked away beneath us which happens in Winter. Despite this we ... read more
