I like eating. I always have enjoyed food. I thought it was just because of the food but in India I realised that there are many things which let you enjoy a good meal. I live in a very small village in Tamil Nadu and we eat rice every day. Rice is enough for the locals. Sometimes just water rice it's good for them (it's like a rice soup); often you can eat white rice with some vegetables (not too much!) or sambar; if you are lucky you can eat dosa (with the same sambar or with coconut chutney); and if you are super lucky you can have some chapatis (the sauce doesn't change). Idly is just for breakfast (don't try to eat it for lunch or dinner!!! This is not allowed). Once every three months ... read more

In September in Tamil Nadu it's rainy season or, also called, monsoon. This year it arrived pretty late (maybe because of “climatic change”?) but, anyway, it arrived and it didn't stop raining for some weeks. India is a confrontating country and we have much rain. On the other hand, it can still be pretty difficult to get water at home. In my village we have some manual water pumps and you can go and get some water from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. each morning. There is such a pump in front of our house and you can see many women filling the buckets up every morning. We are lucky in that we have a more modern system. Look! We have an electric pump. If you switch it one every day for 30 minutes, you can ... read more

I had a bad day and so I called for help from my best friends here in India. I think it’s interesting to exchange opinions, reflexions and thoughts with people from different countries, languages and experiences. I wrote about that day. Siddharth (a young Indian guy, very nice and very clever. He is interested in discovering the world and learning from each moment of life) and Paul (an Australian guy, young is not the word but I can say very active, who has been living in India since March 2010, and who has travelled a lot around India during his life) gave me some feedback. I think both know me quite well. So, here is what I wrote and their comments: "Today it was a bad day. I woke up very happy, optimistic with a lot ... read more

Here you are, my little nice story... HE: Local Indian man, maybe around 50. Simple villager and no English (or Catalan!). SHE: Catalan girl, she's 29 and lives in Vedanthangal. She works as a teacher volunteer in an NGO. BACKGROUND: Carol recently had one of those days where you think "What am I doing here in India?" The result of accumulated small problems, the different cultures, bad communication and the tropical pace of life. She needs a break and goes to the lake for a walk. Once there, she sits. The tears start rolling down her cheeks. She is aware of time just ticking by. She listens as somebody approaches her. It is an Indian man wearing a white shirt and white Lungi (kind of cloth that men use to wear us a trousers). She lifts ... read more

Yesterday my colleague Lourdes and I went to Habeeb's place to have dinner. Habeeb is a man who lives in Vedanthangal. He's about 45 years old and he is married and has a beautiful daughter. He has a shop. He doesn't have many things in his shop, and we thought that maybe it was another kind of shop.... (some joints behind the cookies?). Well... probably, because he is a business man!! And Lourdes is a business woman so... you can imagine me in the middle, like an umpire on a tennis court! And now I am sure of this. Not joints – but many other things! It’s very funny! It started some weeks ago with beer. We are in the middle of nowhere and it's difficult to find an apple here, so imagine one beer!! It ... read more

Look at him! Isn't he nice? Oh yes, he is!! I want to introduce him to you. He's my editor! Yes, I have an editor! What a high! I explained my project about writing new articles for the Travel Blog and he suggested some ideas to me and offered to make some corrections if I needed them. And he is the one most responsible for this crazy idea about writing another blog in English! It's his fault, for sure (thank you!). And do you know why? First of all he invited me to the Travel Blog site and I was very curious, I wanted to explore it! But, why in English? Because he's Australian. I met him through Couchsurfing.org and I'm spending many hours talking and writing to him in English. Yes, he's also my English ... read more

Two weeks ago my friend Paul sent me an invitation to visit his blog in the Travel Blog website. I was already following his blog (I recomend it to you, specially if you are interested in Indian life!). I had a look in this website and I thought about all the possibilities it has! I thought Why don't you try to write a new blog here? It would be interesting learning how to do it! And, why don't you try to write it in English? So.... Here you are! It is my new challenge! Writing a new blog in Travel Blog in English! You know I'm not very good with computers and with English either, but... I'm not that bad! Let's try it! New objective, new motivation, new knowledge, new way to learn, I love it!! ... read more
