Unusual weather we're having, ain't it? - The Cowardly Lion, Wizard of Oz Monday – My ass hurts I was teaching Ahmed some Spanish in the dive centre today as it was just me and him there for an hour or two. Nothing too useful of course I taught him ‘Mi cago en la puta’ which directly translates to ‘I shit on a whore’ (I know it’s very vulgar), puta has also been known to describe a prostitute as well. I love teaching him words (mainly dirty ones)! Like the other day I was teaching him some English when we were at a dive site. We were both sitting down on a bench and I was pointing at things and saying what they were in English like tanks, regulators, water etc and he was telling me ... read more

Refrigeration is underrated Monday – ‘Idea’ Sgt Nicolas Angel, Hot Fuzz I’m going to be totally honest here and I might sound like a true crazy person but sometimes when I’m drinking water I just let some of it dribble down myself, I find it oddly satisfying. Obviously I don’t do it with other beverages as water evaporates (and quickly in Aqaba) so there is no mess. I don’t drench myself, I just do it a little bit. It’s cooling and soothing. As you can probably guess Monday was a quiet day. Nobody wanted to dive with us today so instead me and Belal also brainstormed ideas for the Dive Centre we came up with 30 in the end. Most of them are just minor things that we need like for example the light in the ... read more

Winter is coming Monday – They are coming I’ve been finding it difficult to write anything in regards to this day. I didn’t do a lot. There was no diving with any customers and I’m starting to miss the Finnish people and Angela because of it! So me and Belal went on a little adventure to the Falafel place. I’m not sure where it was exactly from the dive centre so Belal was my local guide. My mind was wandering by itself again though. This time it wasn’t comparing trees between the UK and Aqaba. I was wondering when people come and visit me. I already have a couple of people lined up who want to come and visit and I can’t wait! When they arrive I will take care of them. Mohamed’s brother who owns ... read more

(nearly) Naked diver week! Monday - F*cking flappy hands This morning I realised just how tall I actually am. I jumped in my shower and realised the shower head is very low. It shoots the water directly on my chest. I had the same probrem when I went to Thailand last year. The Thai people were all much smaller than me so the shower head was naturally in a lower position in every hotel/ hostel that I visited. But nevermind. This was a hell of a day. I did two dives with the Finnish group and we went to the Rainbow Reef and Cedar Pride. We mixed it up a bit and went on a deep dive first to around 24 metres. We saw a ray! I’m not sure what type of ray but it was ... read more

The Finn’s (plus Angela) have arrived Monday – Some gas issues Ok so in the morning when I and Mohamed are sitting in the van at our house. We don’t drive to the Dive Centre. We sit there for at least 2 minutes maybe even 4 or 5 on some days and Mohamed will just look at across the road. I thought to myself the past few weeks that he is just meditating or mentally preparing himself for the day. But I found out today that we don’t move after turning on the ignition because the van needs time to essentially ‘warm up’. DURHH. Today the group from Finland who are Mohamed’s friends went on their first dive. Altogether there’s 5 of them. There’s Mama Finn (who’s not a diver but came to Aqaba for the ... read more

‘I think I’m getting the hang of this!’ – Samwise Gamgee Monday – Deepest dive ever braahhhh! I went on my deepest dive EVER today to 38.4 metres. I was scared that I would get Nitrogen Narcosis and suck in water in order to breath. I’ll explain, Nitrogen Narcosis is something that happens when you go underwater and it is typically noticeable at 30 metres and it basically makes you thick. You think slow, solving problems can be slower and you can also feel happy and not really bother about your safety… In other words drunk. I couldn’t help but think of the last deep dive I went on with Liene (a diving intern buddy), Mark (the guy who got me through my Divemaster in less than a week a.k.a. my saviour) and Pete (Tenerife Diving ... read more

Desert Storm 7th September – Stand by your beds! I woke up at 4am this morning, as I always do because of my alarm. Did I forget to mention what my alarm is? Oh yes… An alarm on a phone is too mainstream, a watch is a no go. So instead I have a whole building to go off for me at set times every morning! About 30 metres from my front door is a Mosque. The only issue is that I can’t have a lie in! (By that I mean sleep until 7:30am) When the speakers activate it’s like someone is shouting in my room. I will be fine after a few weeks I think. But until then I will wake up in the middle of the night thinking I’m still in the cadets with ... read more

Finding a new routine 2nd September – 2 guys with camels walk in to a Dive Centre… So the strangest thing just happened. I was sitting in the Dive Centre putting my blog link on Facebook, while Muhammed (Dive owner’s son) was doing something around the corner outside (cheeky). I then look up to see two Jordanian men riding camels down the road and stop outside the Dive Centre. I look at them out of the corner of my eye to see what the hell they were doing. The camels started to drink out of a bath tub that was lying by the side of the road, I always wondered why that was there. One of the men then casually strolls inside the Dive Centre, and as if I’m not there he takes a cup from ... read more

I didn’t even arrive at my accommodation and already obviously things went tits up. I’ll start from the top. I realised that I left my badass sunglasses and my diving boots when I arrived at Manchester. I did not tell my dad as he was already in a tiff because I ‘only’ printed my tickets off the morning I was due to fly. But if that was the extent of my worries then I would have had a splendid journey. On the plane to Istanbul there were a fantastic array of movies #thanksturkishairlines. I ended up watching United Passions and the Kingsman. The flight to Aqaba from Istanbul I met a nice girl from Finland who was visiting her boyfriend in Amman, apparently the flights to Aqaba were £200 cheaper to Aqaba and her boyfriends whipped ... read more

WEEK 1 It has begun! Waited for over two months and I'm finally here so far I haven't done any diving... Boo... However I have met some great people from all over the world from USA, Australia, New Zealand to holland, Germany and Cornwall and a couple of mad lads from Ireland... Standard. I am currently staying with 3 lads, a German an Australian and a half Thai half English guy a 10 minute walk from the dive centre and the rest of the dive master interns. The weather is as you would expect in the middle of May, high 20's sometimes creeping into the thirties at some points in the day which definitely is an improvement than the Scouse weather which was 5 degrees and raining when I left, not missing home yet... So we're ... read more
