Aaron and Johanna have been happily married for two years. Aaron has been working hard and saving up vacation time for nearly a year. We departed S.L.O. in the morning and started toward L.A. The day started with a cloudy sky which quickly gave way to sunshine by mid morning. At that point we saw a sign for Refugio State Beach and turned in. Johanna was feeling a little bit of relief from her sunburn and was actually able to partially enjoy the beach! We spent the rest of the morning there and left a little after noon to avoid getting roasted again. Johanna’s cousin Jenny had recently relocated to Camarillo so we made plans to meet up with her later that afternoon. On the way to Camarillo we drove through Santa Barbara. We were both very impressed by the landscaping in that city. It seemed very clean and well manicured. After taking a break to walk through a park ... read more

After a restful night in Salina, we once again headed south on Route 1. Soon we were rounding the many curves in the road as it follows the 90 mile stretch of coastline that is known as Big Sur. The day started out cloudy and foggy as is often the case in this area. By the time we had arrived at the Bixby Bridge, we could see some hints of blue over the mountains and were hopeful that the sky would soon clear. When we arrived at Andrew Molera State Park, the skies were perfectly clear and the weather had become quite pleasant. The beach was at the end of a one mile trail through meadows of wildflowers. Upon arriving on the beach we were treated to an unspoiled shoreline that full of driftwood, seaweed, and ... read more

After a good night’s rest to recover from our hike we headed west toward San Francisco. The drive to SF was pleasant and the skies were clear. Upon arriving in SF we quickly learned why the local shops sell so many sweatshirts! It was cool and breezy. We headed for the Fisherman’s Wharf area eager for a seafood lunch. After lunch we took a drive down the curviest road in America, Lombard Street. Aaron then took the car down what must be the steepest residential street in America which made Johanna a bit nervous. Thankfully the brakes on our rental car handled the decline without any problems. Next we drove across the Golden Gate Bridge and stopped for some pictures in the park just across the bay before leaving the city. We got onto Route 1 ... read more

We broke camp early the next day and headed for the Valley to try and get a campsite closer to the Half Dome trailhead in anticipation of this hike the following day. When we arrived at the reservations office, we met a woman, Naomi, outside the office. She had a pass for a site that some of the members of her group did not need as they had to leave early. We bought the pass from her and considered ourselves lucky as all the valley campgrounds were full. After setting up camp in the Upper Pines campground, we talked with Naomi about our plans for the Half Dome hike the next day. She and her friend Karen gave us several tips and then offered two of their bikes to use for touring the Valley that afternoon. ... read more

We departed Vegas late morning after catching up on some much needed Z’s. The sun was bright and it looked like we were headed for some hot weather in Death Valley. Soon enough we confirmed our suspicions. Death Valley was interesting but unfortunately the visibility was not great here either. We still enjoyed watching the elevation drop and the temperature rise as we drove through it! Other cars were scarce so the park was very quiet - as if we were the only living things around for miles because we probably were! The temperature went above 110 while we were there and was predicted to hit 120! We stopped at a family owned resort on the west edge of the park for a big frozen smoothie. While we were there one of the employees caught a ... read more

Sorry for the delay in updating the blog. We have not had internet access for a couple of days. Ok, we did have internet access while we were in Las Vegas but we were too busy enjoying Vegas to update our blog! After checking the weather forecast, the weather in Zion seemed favorable over that of the Grand Canyon, so we broke down camp in Bryce and headed for Zion early Thursday morning. The drive to Zion was short so we were able to secure a first-come first-serve tent site in the park’s campground. Zion was considerably hotter than Bryce, with a high that day of 103 degrees!!!! Not exactly OUR weather… Needless to say, we did not need our fleeces and wool hats on this portion of the trip! Zion operates shuttle buses that run ... read more

The past two days have certainly been chock full -o- scenic goodness! We left our campsite in Moab and made a stop in at Wicked Brew Coffee Drive Through to load up on our favorite caffeinated beverages before hitting the road. The highways we traveled through Utah had great views out every window. The speed limit was 75 and the roads were empty so between our many stops for pictures we were able make great time across the state (staying within the speed limit of course!). Our first stop on Tuesday was Goblin Valley State Park. The main features of this park are amazing mushroom-shaped rock formations that are referred to as “goblins.” Walking among them truly feels like navigating a martian landscape! We decided to brave the afternoon heat and sun for a quick 1.5 ... read more

We woke up bright and early Saturday morning and headed out to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This park is not one of the most well known National Parks but is definitely one that should be visited more often! The skies were cloudy so we did not know how much of it we would actually be able to see. As we entered the park, we encountered thick fog and wondered if we would even be able to see the road! Soon we were above the clouds and had decent visibility. The sun even cooperated and broke through the clouds long enough for us to snap a few good pictures. While we were in the park, we did a drive along the south rim, stopping to take pictures at multiple overlooks. We then descended ... read more

After leaving Aaron’s sister’s home in Ohio on Wednesday afternoon, we traveled in the direction of St. Louis as long as we could stand to be on the road. As night closed in our eyelids began to become heavier so we stopped in the middle of Illinois for the night. The next day consisted of 800 miles of driving. We started by completing the route to St. Louis where we made a stop to take a few quick pictures of the Gateway Arch and more importantly take a tour of the Budweiser brewery! During the tour we got to see all sorts of memorabilia in a miniature Budweiser museum, the world famous Clydesdales, the brewing and bottling operations, and had a few samples of the freshest beer possible. Aaron even got a certificate for participating in ... read more

Last night we set our clocks for 5am and asked each other if we thought we would actually sleep long enough to be awakened by the alarm. At 4:59 am we rolled over and laughed about the fact that we were both already awake! Yup, we have both been looking forward to departing on this trip for past year and are happy to finally be on the road. We started at 6am with a nice cup of Dunkin' Doughnuts coffee. We headed Northeast and arrived at Aaron's sister's place around 11:30. We spent the next 2.5 hours playing with our nieces and visiting with Lara and Eric. Aaron's mom had sent a bag of goodies for the girls who were most appreciative of their new stuffed animals. Thanks to a the deli spread Lara put out, ... read more
