AJs Adventures

I will be setting out on an adventure in SouthEast Asia, seeking to learn, live, and love every moment. All while wishing that Wes Anderson assembles a soundtrack to capture the small nuances that make life crazy and fun.

So I last left you in Cambodia in Phnom Penh. I traveled north to Siem Reap to take in Angkor Wat. It was amazing, impressinve, and lived up to all the expectations that people set for it. The first day in town I went to the National Museum to get some background on the temples, the beliefs behind them, why there were so many, I ended up learning a lot about Hinduism, Buddhism, and much about the Khmer culture and history. Unfortunately the hotel did not wake me up for sunrise, but I awoke and rushed over to the temples to see the sky light behind Angkor Wat. The temple was larger than I imagined, and well preserved. They were working on preserving a bit of the main tower, so I was unable to get the ... read more

I overnighted on the bus to Nha Tran. Kind of getting used to the cramped overnight bus trips with peoples covering every inch of each aisle. We arrived there at 6:00am. The best way to describe it is as a mix of Florida with highrises covering the beach. I went to hunt down the cheap hotels as all the others were picked off by motos and tuktuks. I headed to the beach to get my bearings, some techno-pop vietnamese music kept getting louder and louder. Once the ocean was in sight siloettes of vietnamese vacationers partaking in their morning workout of calistetics. Wow this is another world... As much as I wanted to drop my bags and take some photos I somehow found the back alley with the cheap hotels. By the time I got back ... read more

Vietnam has been quite the adventure. I landed in Hanoi at night looking for a meal, I could not bring myself to eat dog, after seeing all the dogs in the street I think karma might catch up with me for that one. The next day I was to tackle the town. There was a large lake about a quarter mile from my hotel that took my 45 minutes to find. I wandered down the same street once or twice until I finally realized I was walking in circles. I got a new map took in a few museums including the national museum and learned quite a bit. Unfortunately I was not able to get into the Masoleum to see Ho Chi Mihns embalmed corpse but had a good time at the complex and exploring the ... read more

The slow boat to Laos was true to its name. Spending 6 hours on bus to the thai-laos border, spending the night in Huay Xai only to depart on a two day journey down to Luang Prabang. Though slow, there was at least a decent breeze, good views, and great company. A one night stay over in the small town of Pak Beng proved memorable, including some of the best Indian curry i have ever had. Playing cards and enjoying a cool beer lao on a familys porch while the rest of town crammed into the only local establishment open to take in a world cup match. People do love soccer, well futbol around here. Only to wake up to a rainstorm, broken gutter, and no water the next morning. However, I still did not smell ... read more

Stephanie? No Stephan! Stephanie? No Stephan! A Thai trek guide was picking up a French tourist and Luke, a Brit I met on the overnight train to Chiang Mai, bright and early in the morning. I decided to tag along on the treking adventure. We had a Sunday afternoon before we took off and took in the Sunday market that included excellent food, plenty of trinkets, clothes, and even a beauty contest. We skipped out on the latter. Being out of Bangkok and the relentless barage of husslers is great. Walking down the street and politely saying no is a far cry from having your head down walking quickly and ingnoring countless vendors. Chiang Mai is a city in northern Thailand that is known for the treking adventures in the nearby national park. The day of ... read more
