As soon as we stepped out of the airport at Cancun charlotte got out the bug spray. "look at those two" laughed the local workers. Great so already, we´re the laughing stock of Mexico. Five seconds was all it took. great! But on the up Cancun was actually a lot nicer than we would have thought. Staying downtown it was easy to keep away from the Americans left over from. spring break bulabulabulabula. Sorry I don´t know what happened there. After our first night in san francisco, everybodies favourite town was not ours. Naturally every good bed in the city was gone. The last one left was in an...well an interesting part of town. At a little place not just bad, but so bad that charlotte woke up in the middle of the night screaming mummy. Thats no lie. We had to get out of there and a cheap "backpackers" hotel was the only option. That was much better even though it was in tenterloin, still a bit crazy by night but much better. The windy city was more like the rainy city when our train finally chugged into Chicago. the second city of America felt kinda like halfway. our gateway to Cali. In our minds the spotless promise of eternal sunshine was just a train ride away. (I know, I know.) This was where we would step on to the California zephyr. When leaving New York we were both dreading a 10 hour train ride. But more so we were upset to be leaving this urban jungle we had so deeply taken to. It wasn't at the top of the empire state building. It wasn't at the state of liberty. It wasn't even at the diner with the huge burger that outweighed my head. We arrived at kittila, a tiny airport in lapland. The local temperature was a mild -15; tropical if we compare it to the rest of the week.
