Hi all
Everything is still going great here. Have had a few good night's out in Pub Street with the younger volunteers. Lots of alcohol and dancing in the Temple Bar (hangout for whores) so we were in good company!! Late nights and hangovers just like a "gap year". Teaching is going well - there are lots of teaching aids. Lyn is now with older children (8-10) and speak some English although I still pop back to see the babies (although some are 5/6 yrs they are the size of 4 year olds).
We attended the quiz night on Thursday and our team came 3rd (1 up from last time)although there were 10 of us and a big dog. It was particularly important that we went this week as the proceeds ($150) went to our project Grace House. Another pissy night!
Yesterday was an amazing day as we had a half day off and also Monday. We visited another project New Hope and the villagers are even more impoverished. Working as a volunteer in the Pharmacy (he has his own Pharmacy in Oz) is a young attractive(for the ladies) Khmer guy called Tim. His story is that when
the Pol Pot war broke out his mother with two young kids and pregnant walked from Phomn Penh to Siem Reap which is 9 hours on a coach, and managed to get to Oz - so he comes back each year to volunteer. He showed us around the project and then by bike to visit two very poor villages. When we arrived the kids were all scratching their heads and some were picking lice off of each other's heads. The children all gathered when they saw Tim. We were all(about 10 of us) given bars of headlice soap and with the aid of the village water pump we began to "delouse" many young heads. The kids were all over us and wanted to be picked up and cuddled. Bob immediately started scratching his head! After that Tim bought a load of beers and we went and sat by a small lake watching two men collecting river washed sand from the bed. A small boy joined us for a while -they are so friendly the kids- quite worrying! The weather must have been around 100 degrees so all of us very sweaty - cycled back at 6.30 and like idiots (dripping
and filthy) went to an organised dancing session (around 300 young people) in a school playground. It was western music to various sequence dancing. Bob went back to the guest house desperate for a shower and air-con so missed all the fun! We made lots of new friends who were basically laughing at us and taking the piss. As we left there were cries of "see you tomorrow"-NO! Maybe in a couple of days.
Tonight is the giant Puppet Parade that our project has made a giant crab and various other delightful, smaller animails, insects and hats. 30 kids will carrying them through the town- there will be lots of other puppets made by various projects and we will be at the head of the procession trying to look after"óur very excited kids". It starts at 7 and finishes at 9pm (humidity about 98). When it is all over we will be going to a celebratory party at The Warehouse Bar (4 years of opening). Oh no not more alcohol!
We will now attempt to upload photos!
