25th April-Today we set off early to a place called Sihanouk ville where the beach is yay! 😊 We were sunning ourselves by 1pm on the loungers. The sea was so warm it was a little disappointing when you wanted to cool off. It was kind of brown and you couldn't see your feet so we're all hoping tomorrow is better. Oh and I got stung on my arm by a jellyfish! There are ladies that wander around asking to paint your toes and thread your leg hair and when we declined the one said to one of the girls 'you got a boyfriend?' To which the answer was no and her response was 'you wonder why? Let me sort the hair out' hilarious!! I also told a little boy I didn't want to buy his sunglasses to which he huffed and replied 'fuck you'....nice kids! We topped the day off with a BBQ on the beach.....I went for crab which was extremely hard work and I was still hungry at the end lol! Our night finished with us covered in glow paint in a bar by the sea. Obviously I had Wales written on me 😊 I actually haven't met any other Welsh people yet. I did get a cheeky snog off a cute German though 😉 Update on the bite situation....they have started appearing! Oh and I've discovered Asian toilets.....let's just say they're basically a hole in the ground with what reminds me of one of those tiny sink things you get in old bathrooms as a seat. It's interesting.
Love update....it appears one of the English dudes is getting along well with one of the Icelandic gals and we are pretty sure two of the Germans are getting it on in secret! 😉
26th April-So today we had a chance to go off on a little island tour and stop to go snorkelling along the way. If you threw bread into the water all the little fish would jump out onto it and basically attack it....quite funny! We stopped for lunch on a gorgeous beach that had loads of huts running along it.....here the sun was so strong that despite me reapplying my sun cream and in the end just sitting in the shade, I still got burned to a crisp! I've now bought the local factor 60 sun cream....never thought I'd say that! We were all pretty pooped at dinner so most of us went home straight after. Me and one of the girls Mercede bought a lantern each off the little kids that hassle you and walked down the beach to light them and set them off. Mine said I love you on which I thought was nice and I set it off for my Mum 😊 The pain of my sun burn as I settled down for the night was unreal! I just hoped it would be better in the morning.
27th April-Found my money belt! 😊 😊 I had hidden it in one of the many secret pockets of my backpack....so I am now $80 and 1,000 Thai baht up! So today we set off on our 12 hour journey to our homestay which involved crossing the Vietnam border....and yes peeps I was allowed one more stamp into the passport 😊 We did stop shortly after that to break up the journey a little and do a boat trip up the Mekong River. We went past little villages that are built on the water and stopped by someone's house to see a fish farm....seems a bit mean but I guess they gotta eat! Basically the fish live under the house and come up through two holes for feeding time....they go crazy! We also stopped by a boat that was giving out watermelon which was refreshing. We stopped by a small village to see some of the local craft and bits that they sell. Everything is built on stilts as it floods every year in the rainy season. In 2000 the level was up to their second stories....they write the marks on the wall every year. To get to and from this village we had to walk over little narrow wobbly bridges made out of wooden slats....it's a good job I practiced this in Center Parcs beforehand!
We then made our way back to the bus for the last 5 hours of the journey to our homestay which was amazing! We arrived and put our stuff basically into little dorms in a tin shed. We all had really flat mattresses and mosquito nets....kind of cool! I thought they were hammocks at first haha! Tit! We helped make these pancake looking things for dinner and they brought out a little buffet of things for us....bit like having a takeaway. Did a spot of card playing and skyping before bed. Btw peeps add me on skype it's either my name or search for me via my email address Laura.doheny@hotmail.co.uk
28th April-Happy Birthday to my big cousin Paula 😊 Another early rise yawn! Little bus journey to our hotel (we see little as 4 hours now). I have discovered I'm peeling! No!! Damn sun burn....the pain has gone though. Tonight we're gaining 4 new people to the group....it's a bit like I'm a celebrity. Exciting! I've met one of them as we'll be sharing a room...she's Irish! So as close to Wales as I'm gonna get for now! We went out for lunch as we're in Saigon now....busy busy city! You spend Vietnamese dong out here so we're all millionaires! I braved the noodle soup which isn't bad!
This afternoon we went to see the Cu Chi tunnels where the soldiers hid from the Americans in the war. Our guide was actually a survivor from the war and he was a translator for the Americans and was in the southern part of the army (didn't know there were two. I think he said the other side was called the Vietnam kong??) We got to crawl through a part of the tunnel that they have now widened for us westerners! Apparently we're too big. We also got to fire some guns....I used the M16 I think. You got prizes if you hit the targets....I didn't. I actually worked it out that this cost me a tenner. We also got our first little downfall of rain today....quite refreshing! Our evening consisted of meeting the other newbies, going for dinner in a gorgeous restaurant that had pretty lights in the trees where we cooked our own food on mini bbqs in the table and dancing to shit music in a night club....all good fun though! Oh we saw a lady boy too! Strange in Vietnam xx
