22nd April-So we set off to watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat at 5am! These early mornings are killing me! I'm forever catching flies and forty winks on our bus trips :/ It was pretty but I think we kind of missed the start of it which was a shame. In the grounds I got my first glimpse of two beautiful horses grazing. My first sighting in Asia 😊 We spent the morning taking a peek at the Angkor Wat temple, the Bayon temple and the one from Tomb Raider (can't remember it's name). Obviously the Lara Croft pose was a must! I do try my best to be cultural but I won't lie....I'm all tempted out! We did do a stop to feed the local monkeys though which was beyond cute! One of the guys did learn not to tease them when he got bitten though :/
The humidity over here is unreal! I will never moan about the air con in work again! My hair has gone to pot so it is either drying naturally into frizzy waves or in a bun on my head! The straighteners are just too much! Haha! We were absolutely shattered but just had to go on a quad bike tour across the town and through the rice fields 😊 This is also a wee bit dangerous but total fun! Ed did demonstrate this by ending up in a ditch of stinky water under his quad bike....the guides were most unimpressed and banned him from riding. He also had no bike as it sank! We watched the sunset and then left the rice fields and made the dusty journey back. Saw some buffaloes too! I managed to keep up speed and stay on over the lumps and bumps in the dirt tracks but did get a bug in my eye and nearly took a cow out oops!
Our first hard core partying night happened after a meal out in Pub Street and 2 for 1 cocktails....it was bound to be downhill from there! All in aid of one of the German dudes 20th Birthday 😊 We danced our asses off and even did the classic Macarena in the street! You're not allowed to dance on the tables in Cambodia either.....I tested this and the bouncers over here are like the police! Then Birthday boy lost his wallet with $280 in it.....had to happen to someone! So long Siem Reap! Phnom Penh is next on the list xx
23rd April-I was hoping today would be a beach day as I know my Mum would appreciate that.....but instead we were stuck on a bus for 7 hours! At the start of which I puked twice as I took my malaria tablet on an empty stomach....not good! Took a dioralyte so things didn't escalate! After arriving in our hotel in Phnom Penh we headed out for pizza! Obviously I went for the pepperoni 😊 you don't come across cheese very much here so it's expensive. Not a busy day but was nice to chill in the roof top pool until midnight after cocktails! Not bad I'd say. Although one of the girls nearly killed herself by slipping straight onto her back after getting out of the pool.....like hello I'm off duty! :p oh and love gossip....two of the group have already slept together....let's see how that works out :s oh and it wasn't me btw....they're all too young! xx
24th April-So today we had the choice of an 8:30 start with a Cambodian cooking class or a little lie in and a chance to explore the Royal Palace.....obviously I chose the lie in! So me and Cheryl took a wander to the palace but it was closed 😞 very pretty though! I didn't wear sun cream as it was only like half 9...but paid the price for it! I'm a little red in a vest top shape but other than that my couple of hours at the rooftop pool have given me the start of my tan yay!
This afternoon we went to see the killing fields and had the history behind it explained to us. I didn't take any photos there as I found it really sad. There were bones that we're uncovering as you walked through the paths and still items of clothing in some places. We paid our respects by laying flowers and lighting an incense stick at the entrance to the building that holds the skulls of people decapitated. We then went on to the S21 museum which used to be a high school but was converted into a security centre when Pol Pots was in power (he was the leader of the Genocide) and it was used as a secret concentration camp. We met one of the very few survivors who is now 84 years old. I bought his book for $10 as he only receives $25 a month as compensation for his suffering and torture during his captivity. Also had my photo with him which I'll post on here....an emotional moment!
Tonight we've been out to a local restaurant where I just couldn't face noodles so had spag bol! Not bad actually 😊 I'm into the local beer and it's like 50 cents! Bargain! Now we've made a group decision to chill at the pool bar.....wine is in hand! Oo and I've finally been able to download the iMovie app but it's taking me a while to learn how to use it haha! Xx
