This entry is dedicated to shopping in Vietnam's most cosmopolitan city. To my consternation, every travel blog/book I've skim on HCMC cops out on giving me the skinny on where to go for the good stuff. It's like all the writing assignments on shopping were assigned to grizzly, fifty-year-old men. I don't want to be directed to stores that my grandmother would love! My passion? Shoes. Bags. Food. Shoes. Bags. Sense the pattern here? I'm here to shop till I drop, take advantage of the dong, and go where the natives are. Just beware if you're looking for a guide on luxe-brand shopping here, you've come to the wrong place. I'm not that kinda girl. This entry is dedicated to bargain shoppers around the world who don't mind hustlin' through some Indiana-Jones shenanigans to get their ... read more

i was exactly on the hundredth page of graham greene’s the quiet american when we left for vietnam. thirty years after the country has known peace, i wondered how much of pyle, thomas and phuong were left. as a tribute of sort to a war-ravaged country, we wanted to keep a somber mood all throughout our journey, a kind of a reflective pilgrim instead of joyous trip, but vietnam was all set on making us have a good time. darwin and i only had a couple of light bags so we opted to take the train to the airport. i was also wearing my green wedges for the first time (not counting the little walks i did in the office while those wedges were still in “hiding”) so i wanted to road test those beauties before ... read more

This trip to Vietnam was a present for my mother and me. I had always promised my mother that we would go back to her homeland to see the places she'd described and wanted me to experience firsthand. Staring into the Vietnamese bathroom, I didn't expect this to be one of them. I had arrived at Ho Chi Minh earlier, midnight, rumpled, sleepy, and cheered at by a huge crowd gathered outside the sidelines of the arrivals gate, expectantly waiting for family and friends. Ahead, by the sidelines were my extended family: uncle-in-law, aunt, and cousin. Their hired driver tucked our luggage into his minivan and off we went, into the night, to Bien Hoa, the family home of my uncle. By the way, we're all Viet Khieu, or native lingo for Overseas Vietnamese. So, here ... read more

I was really thrown off when we arrived at how much the Vietnamese still call this city Saigon. I expected to hear nothing but “Ho Chi Minh City” in reverence to Uncle Ho and the war. Nope. It’s still mostly Saigon. It’s so much Saigon that I now always refer to it as Saigon. It’s not as much a mouthful as Ho Chi Minh City. And I like the way it sounds better. Saigon is bigger, faster, louder, and even more exciting than Hanoi. The traffic is also more insane. I liked Saigon as much as I liked Hanoi, and they each have high points the other one doesn’t. What we did/Where to go: 1. Ch Chi Underground Tunnels: These blew me away. I was proud of myself after visiting the tunnels because we actually crawled ... read more

Hello, we are now in vietnam and i have to say it is a very nice after the humbling experience of cambodia. Saigon is so lovely, it is just like paris and even has the notre dame cathedral. I definitly could live here. The border crossing was much more official than into cambodia and a little scary. On Monday we went to the war crimes museum which was a harsh experience. Quite anti american and lots of photography from the war. We then spent 5 hrs walking around and enjoying the fact there are pavements here!! We even found the hotel de ville! Which again, is very french. That night we met up with 2 NZ guys from our bus and ended up getting extremely drunk, not drunk enough to try the snake wine though, which ... read more

I actually left Vietnam on Saturday the 11th, but haven't had time to get to a computer until now. My last impressions of Vietnam were of the city of Saigon. It is a huge, busy place, not really my style. It was interesting, but I was happy to leave when I did. It was very relaxing and even a relief to cross the border back in to Calm Cambodia. In retrospect I should have gone straight from Saigon up to Dalat, which is a small mountain town with waterfalls and hikes all around it. Instead I did the tourist thing in and around the city with my little trip out into the Mekong Delta. I'll have to save Dalat for next time. I met very intersting people on my tourist trails - including two Basques who ... read more

Today I started my tourism in ernest. I signed up for a tour of the Cu Chi tunnels just outside of Ho Chi Minh. It was my first time with a group like that, but very interesting. The tunnels are where the people of the village of Cu Chi hid when Americans were in the area or when the area was being bombed. The tunnels include rooms for sleeping, cooking, meetings, medical clinic, etc. Some of the rooms are as deep as 20 meters, and the tunnels themselves are very narrow. You almost have to crawl through them. The tour was accompanied by the typical government propaganda, but in all it was a very positive experience. The guide had fought for the South and when his side lost he had to do eight years in a ... read more

Xin chao! The bus ride here was interesting, but comfortable. It was a nice tourist bus with air conditioning, but they showed the same few Cambodian karaoke clips repeatedly. So far I have wandered around the backpacker nieghborhood a bit and compared hotels before finding one with a huge room, two beds, minifridge, A/C, and a nice, clean bathroom with shower and bath for $8. I'm sure it's more than Anisa would have paid for a room, but I looked at the $3 dollar rooms and decided that the extra $5 is worth it. My hotel also organizes tours - I'm thinking about a couple days at the beach - and free internet. Unfortunately it doesn't work too well, but I'm going to give it a try. I might not be able to add any photos ... read more

Yes, here I am in Ho Chi Min City, where coned hats, french pastries and mystery meat on the street prevail. I like it better than PP already! Staying in a $2.50 USD guest house. I'm sharing with my new friend Helen from England, who is in her 8th month of travel. She's going for a whole year. At our hotel, we get free breakfast too -- your choice of tea or coffee and "baked." Took me awhile to figure out that meant 'baguette.' (You gotta love the English translations and spelling here!) Ate it in a little kitchen that doubles as a hair salon. Hair cuts are also included in the daily rate. :) Took the first bus out of Cambodia a few days ago. PP was certainly not a place for one... my gut ... read more

ARRIVING IN SAIGON Our bus dropped us off very early in the morning at Pham Ngu Lao, the backpacker center of Day 15 - 18 in Vietnam Arriving in Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City - HCMC Our bus dropped us off very early in the morning at Pham Ngu Lao, the backpacker center of Saigon. Some touts followed us around, but we decided to stay clear of them. Being accosted from all sides by people extolling the virtues of their hotel gets to you after a while. You simply don't know who to trust when people say anything just to get your money. They try to wear you down, calculating on your tiredness & inability to move on after you've decided what they promised is a complete fabrication....
