Hi again, we just got back to Ho Chi Minh City from 2 days on the Mekong (with an overnight 'homestay' that is really sort of a Vietnamese bed and breakfast). Internet connectivity was unavailable down there and also at our hotel tonight so I'll try to post more with photos tomorrow when we have a chance (at an internet cafe right now). The Mekong was a really pleasant surprise and the kids both actually ate the local food (elephant ear fish and spring-rolls we made ourselves at the table) but we have all burnt out on riding the buses to see the sights (about 4.5 hours return today). Also, the weather at the beach (and here in the city as well) calls for rain the next few days so we have decided to punt on ... read more

Hello everyone, So my last entry was written just as we had arrived in Saigon, we are now in the coastal resort of Nha Trang and I have once again woken up early (starting to get annoying) so I thought I would update you on whats been going on whilst Heather is asleep upstairs. After we wrote the blog on the first day we went to sample the infamous Pho (beef noodle soup) and Bia Hoi (local beer at around 15p a glass), both were pretty good and a real bargain! The streets in Saigon are CRAZY, motorbikes everywhere, crossing the road was pretty fun! We also went to a tour operator and booked a trip to the Cu Chi tunnels for the next day. So we had to be up early for the Cu Chi ... read more

After a bunch of hemming and hawing we decided it made more sense to head north to Hanoi and visit Hao Long bay and leave the Anghor Wat return for another trip. We're hopping a plane there today and we'll be bookending it with a day in Hanoi on either end of 3 days and two nights on Hao Long bay, one on a boat (made to look like an old chinese junk) and one in a hotel on 'Monkey Island'. Probably we'll post here again from Hanoi but I doubt we'll have internet on the boat. Another interesting factoid; Lots of young people are working in the shops and restaurants around the tourist areas. Carolyn and I talked to a few of them at length and it seems they are making only around 50 cents ... read more

We started hearing the wail of the ship's horn at 5am--so I knew we were getting close to beautiful HaLong Bay. Because of the rock formations which fill the Bay, the horn had a perfect echo. The little fishing skiffs were out in force and they definitely don't like to pull up their nets just so some fancy boat can pass unimpeded. We have been to this area of Vietnam five times but we still marvel at the massive limestone karsts dotting the landscape. It was a mystically misty morning. Our docking coincided with opening day of the baseball season back home and believe it or not we watched the World Champion San Francisco Giants take on the LA Dodgers at 7am our time. It was a great game except--- we lost. But then there are ... read more

Having a quite day today as we set the stage for the next segment of our trip. We have delayed the departure to the Mekong until tomorrow so that we could plan ahead for a change. Right now the kids are finishing up a homework session (about 90+ min of work each) while Carolyn just went out to talk to a travel agent. Once the kids are done, they and I will probably head over to the war museum (aka Museum of American War Crimes) and maybe take in the reunification palace. Carolyn's attendance will depend on what gets booked at the agency. After the Mekong, the main options are; 1. Boat to Pnom Penh and then on to Siam Reap to visit Angkhor Wat again 2. Plane to Hanoi and then overnight on a Junk ... read more

Today we took an excursion out of town to the cao dai temple and then to the cu chi tunnels from the American war. The temple was intersting. Cao Dai is a religon that started here in the 1920's or 30's and tries to blend Christianity, Budhism, Confuscionism, Islam, ancestor worship and a few other sects. We saw their great catheral and the beginning of a service at a site very close to the Cambodian border. On the way back to HCMC we stopped at the Cu Chi tunnels. This was the end point of the Ho Chi Minh trail during the Vietnam war and had a tunnel complex with 10s fo thousands of people living underground and tunnels that led from the border with Cambodia all the way into Saigon (120 km)... read more

Last night the kids were pretty exhausted and they ended up sleeping for about 12 hours last night. Good thing we didn't have anything much planned. This morning we switched hotels to move down the block (from the 'An an 2' to the 'Beautiful Saigon'). A the new place we have given up having an elevator (4th floor walkup now) but its the same price, cleaner, quieter (no places across the street open till 4am playing load music or buses honking at 6am) and has a really good restaurant in the lobby. Just to be clear, the lobby is not like your standard Marriott. The entire building is about 6 stories high, about 100 feet deep and about 18 feet wide (narrower than a 2 car garage). So the 'lobby' is the restaurant with room for ... read more

Hi again, looks like the blog will be less pretty than we hoped. Can't upload pics from the phone (on wifi) and the internet cafe doesn't let you plug anything in either (fear of viruses). Hopefully we'll get some pictures in at later sites. We arrived last night at the hotel around midnight (~2pm Boston time IIRC) and surprisingly everyone did manage to get to sleep pretty quickly. This morning we scouted out the local area we are in which is the main backpacker tourist district. We found a new hotel for tomorrow night (same price but much nicer one block over) and then walked down to the Ben Tranh market for a bit of window shopping. After that we spent a bit of time trying to organize the next few days. After that we walked ... read more

We went back to Saigon, first we spent 2,5 hours on the boat and after that 5 hours in bus. We met some nice Vietnamese people on the bus who helped tanslating when we had breaks and when we arrived. We found a hotel (Hotel 97) for 8 $ a night close to the bars and the more touristy areas. We found a pizza place and we were really hungry after the long trip. After this we walked around in Saigons streets, the first time we saw it in the evening. It was less chaotic and a better experience than our first day there - we found some crazy shops and bought some different stuff to bring home. We booked a trip on the Mekong river and to the floating market the day after, and since ... read more
